Photography has been around since the fifth century. Since then, this profession has advanced greatly throughout history. The word “photography” was created by a combination of Greek Root words, “photo”, meaning “light”, and “graphia”, meaning “writing” or “drawing”. We, as humans, have always been fascinated by the concept of being able to capture a moment within a picture and create a memory to keep and look back on. Photographs help us recall our past and can trigger different emotions from that memory. Photography has also changed the way many subjects are taught, for example, history is taught through visual representation, in particular, photos. There are both positive and negative effects to society when it comes to photography, for …show more content…
Many times has society seen a celebrity’s privacy be intruded, with or without their permission, by paparazzi with their cameras. After a photo is taken it can then be edited not just for better but for worse as well. This leads to false advertisement that is then spread through social media as well television and even the radio. On even more serious matters photos can be used for blackmailing not just by any citizen, but specifically, terrorists, whose intentions are commonly destructive. There are also pedophiles, molesters, and identity thief’s who like to hide behind an image that is not their …show more content…

Throughout history, photographs have been known to depict and represent culture, character, information, and ideology. Through specific elements of form, and close scrutiny, photographs give a representation of the “bigger picture” by providing content and invaluable information that text, on its own, does not produce. Dr. Carol Payne, a professor of art history at Carleton University, wrote an essay in 2012 for the Oxford University Press. This essay focused on the relationships between photographic images, Canadian culture and identity, and indigenous people. Her thesis was to discuss how an image can present a sense of national identity (Carol Payne 310).
The article allows its readers to understand the importance and limitations of photography while showing the significance of new inventions during this era. The author makes two central claims throughout the article relating to the camera’s effect. Firstly, they say “His images
Nearly every time our family eats in Cracker Barrel, we get a laugh about some of the old photographs hanging on the wall. It is hard to believe that those people had to be perfectly still for a very long time to just take one picture. In the time it has taken me to write this paragraph, my dad took a bunch of pictures of our cat. On just our phones alone, the picture quality, speed, and color were probably unimaginable 100 years ago.
Therefore the role of photography plays an essential part of the world in order to spot the war situation in
For instance, she cites iconic dates, in which photographs drew public attention, such as incidents in “1840’s, “1871”, and “1930’s”. By choosing to include the dates of events and notable time periods, she exemplifies her knowledge of the history of photography and establishes how her claims are based on factual research and analysis of previous events. Rather than speaking abstractly about the social implications of photography, she references specific events, which strengthens her argument, since factual evidence is more difficult to refute due to its objective
A photograph can mean so much to different people, but it’s ultimate purpose is to capture an important moment in someone’s life and be able to hold onto a physical copy of a memory. Photographs enact a certain nostalgia for the past, the good times or perhaps an important person or location; it’s a memory you want to last indefinitely. It’s a subject many people don’t touch on when they examine a film like Blade Runner (1982), but director Ridley Scott’s film does place an emphasis on the importance of photographs and what they can mean to people. The film depicts photos as a gateway to nostalgia, the immortalization of important figures and how photographs can deceive their owners. When you hold onto a photography they are generally a preserved version of a past memory that is important or a time of happiness.

As many as 13 photographers were commissioned by the FSA and produced well over 270,000 images (prints and negatives) during this time span. Not only did the FSA provide visual proof of the social and economic problems facing America, these photos are significant for they exposed the disparities of living in America and helped shape policy and social reform after the First World War. They set a precedent for a new genre of storytelling that combined visuals with words, and collectively remembered for documentation of strife and discontent in America. The FSA photos and documentaries are part of history and continue to be included in numerous photo books, magazines, newspapers, news services, museums, and exhibits as one of the most convincing examples of documentary photography. In retrospect, this form of visual advocacy served a higher purpose that elevated art as a form of social awareness and brought legitimacy to social reform and to the masses.
A photograph is more than just a simple image; it tells a story. A story beyond a particular moment in time, it holds secrets and memories. The eagerness to comprise a moment in the perfect shot seems to become an obsession for many. In Kim Edwards ' novel The Memory Keeper 's Daughter, Edwards uses photography as a motif which coincides with the novel 's idea of secrets. David Henry, the antagonist of the novel, becomes fascinated with photography after choosing to give away his daughter and compresses his guilt with photography.
"The photographic image is the object itself, the object freed from the conditions of time and space that govern it. No matter how fuzzy, distorted, or discolored, no matter how lacking, in documentary value the image may be, it shares, by virtue of the very process of its be- coming, the being of the model of which it is the reproduction; it is the model." "Photography does not create eternity, as art does, it embalms time, rescuing it simply from its proper corruption. The aesthetic qualities of photography are to be sought in its power to lay bare the realities."
Just as Sontag emphasises in her essay, photography is useful tool that captures the memories, defenses against anxiety, and brings familiarity. In additional, personally I also believe that photos can empower the world by sharing
