Ever since we are little, most of us hate the idea of needle pricks at the doctor’s office. We cringe, cry, hold our moms hand or even embarrassingly pass out. Although we are difficult patients during the collection of blood specimens, it is actually crucially important for a Phlebotomist to perform a proper collection of specimens. Phlebotomy can be the backbone of the laboratory and provide proper diagnosis for patients. Improper collection can lead to complications, including misdiagnosis. Misdiagnosis can mean life or death for patients. Phlebotomists have multiple duties and responsibilities starting with preparing the patient for collection procedures, collect routine skin puncture and venous specimens for testing, prepare specimens …show more content…
Based off standard precautions, I would already be wearing scrubs, a gown to protect my skin and clothes from contamination and have proper shoes on. Proper shoes entail that the toe and heel are enclosed and that the shoes are not mesh. This is vital due to the situation of a needle or tube dropping. The dirty needle could puncture the foot or the tube may break causing splatter and contaminate the foot and surrounding area. Furthermore, after identifying the patient I can follow the rest of the safety precautions by putting on a clean pair of gloves and begin my prep.
Being a Phlebotomist in a nursing home, I go to each patient’s bedside. My toolbox comes with me to each room. Inside my vampire toolbox contains a Biohazards container, a box of gloves, rolls of medical tape, gauze, alcohol prep pads, tourniquets, 22g straight needles and butterfly needles. For each patient, I put on a new clean pair of gloves, put a piece of tape below my thumb, grab a piece of gauze, alcohol prep pad and tourniquet. I keep all these materials close to me so that everything can be done in an orderly and timely
This is certainly essential with the patient care. Students will also be taught concerning the human anatomy, methods associated to dealing with of needles, establishing correct rapport with the patients, guaranteeing safety and maintaining information during the phlebotomy training. Students are exposed to deal with several types of medical equipments such as biohazardous waste containers, spill kits, syringes, vaccum tubes, bandage, tapes, blood culture bottles, tourniquets and locking arm rests. The equipments are organized such that they fall beneath the lates technology set. That is completed with a purpose to train the phlebotomist in a better and environment friendly manner.
d) Setting out procedures When setting out for procedure its done in two stages in our practice. First is initial setting of the instruments and materials before patient enter room. All (chair, spittoon, work tops...) is wipe down with disinfectant wipes and then set up instrument tray with some cotton wool rolls, articulation paper and 3 in 1 tip on little table on the side the chair handy for clinician. This table is moveable and can be set in desirable position. Hand pieces and local anaesthetic syringe with needle are place on the stationary table in the reach of clinical in the case she may need them.
14.Both. They can help with reconstruction later. 15.Bloodborne pathogens 16.You should wear neoprene gloves for bases and polyvinyl chloride gloves for oils. 17.This is when you are required to treat all blood or bodily fluids as if they are infected.
In fact, chloroform was standard issue for every doctor. The chloroform allowed for the doctors to successfully amputate with the patient unconscious. Union Medical Director Jonathan Letterman made a system of diagnosis and care that still exists today. Letterman’s system called for triage near the
Claudia Kalb’s article “ Do No Harm,” published in the October 4, 2010, issue of Society, discuses the healthcare professionals’ defensive behavior that causes the malpractices among patients. Kalb reports that since the Health system’s applied the lawyer Boothman’s program of “ disclosure and compensation,” then the number of lawsuits reduced as well as the legal- defense costs have dropped around 61 percent. In 1999, there were around 100,000 Americans people are killed from the preventable medical errors, noted Kalb. Also, the header of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services even claims that there won’t be any refund to the hospitals for preventable medical error cases. According to Kalb, Harvard’s Institute for Professionalism and
Health and safety policy Healthy and safety in a general practice surgery aims to keeping patients safe in the surgery. The responsibility of keeping service users safe should be on all the employees. The Health and Safety at Work Act imposes duties on employers and employees to protect individuals. To enable these duties to be carried out (Deepingspractice.co.uk, 2015) GP surgeries have a sharps bin, which is for the disposal of sharp instruments, such as needles. This bin should be kept open and not filled to a certain level because the lives of the patients may be at risk.
If a sponge or an instrument fell on the floor it was washed and squeezed in a basin of tap water and used as if it were clean. Our silk to tie blood vessels was undisinfected.... The silk with which we sewed up all wounds was undisinfected. If there was any difficulty in threading the needle we moistened it with bacteria laden saliva, and rolled it between bacteria-infected fingers. We dressed the wounds with clean but undisinfected sheets, shirts, tablecloths, or other old soft linen rescued from the family ragbag.
Infections: Needles are a big hazard if not thrown away after use. If they are left lying around someone else it can pass on symptoms if they someone who used it before had diabetes or maybe even HIV, it can even cause an infection. This is a health hazard. Another hazard is if there is no hygiene in the hospital, someone could become seriously ill. For example if nurses or doctors don’t wash their hands after helping another patient and then move on to the next, the patient could catch something.
My stance on lobotomies are that there was never an actual need for them. Doctors have always thought they could cure and save people without using proper tools and precautions. Before technology was where it is at today doctors guessed and even used risky tactics to cure people or even gain popularity for themselves. Howard was misguided and young, his parents were looking for an excuse to a failed parenting attempt on their part.
Aside from being knowledgeable in the field, Pathologists ' Assistants should also be flexible, amicable, communicate effectively, and possess time management skills. An important characteristic I noticed when observing the Pathologists ' Assistants was the amount of reasonability and trust they must gain from the Pathologists '. A patient 's diagnosis and course of treatment rely solely on the Pathologists ' Assistants ability to apply their knowledge and resources efficiently to sample appropriate areas of the given tissue. All in all, I admire the field as a whole but respect the role of a Pathologists ' Assistants because of their ability to tackle multiple tasks all at once, comply with the different demands from several Pathologists ', and remain poised under pressure. It is an honor to be able to work side-by-side with healthcare providers that go above and beyond to ensure quality service to their patients.
Sarah rolls her eyes. She removes the gloves, placing them inside a red bio hazard baggie and begins rummaging the first aid kit for cotton balls, hydrogen peroxide, gauze and tape. “So, you going to tell me what happened in there or not” she asks searching the first aid kit. “Trust me, the least you know the safer you 'll be” said Connor while Sarah puts on fresh gloves and applies hydrogen peroxide to a cotton ball.
They can also relay the test result to the patient, but they can't diagnose or interpret them. Also while under the supervision of a doctor they can administer medication and in some states, they can start an IV line. They can pass on questions from a patient to a doctor by phone and can transcribe dictated medical documents for the doctor. Manage patients accounts and schedule their appointments They can order medical
The lobotomy was an inhumane, evil, and cruel procedure done on thousands of people in the 20th century. Walter Freeman performed roughly 5,000 of these, while the people he taught the procedure to may have performed 40,000 more, meaning that he was more or less responsible for 45,000 lobotomies within the US. With this much blood on his hands, we must ask ourselves: “Should he receive one as well”? The lobotomy is a barbaric procedure, and more often than not, yielded poor results, with a fatality rate of 15% (page 66).
The one thing I would like to do after high school is become an LPN. The reason why I would like to do become an LPN is because I enjoy helping others. Knowing I can support people would make me happy. Taking shots, drawing blood, and taking vital signs would be interesting for me, I think I would enjoy that very much. LPN’s have several duties they need to do.
Towards the end of the procedure the nurse counted all sponges and needles with the scrub to make sure that no equipment was left within the patient. The nurse also continued to document information such as the length of the surgery and the amount of blood lost throughout the procedure. Lastly, the circulating nurse cleaned the room and then transferred the patient into a hospital bed to be transferred to the post-anesthesia care unit. Ignatavicius and workman (2013) addressed that these are all responsibilities of the circulating nurse (p.
