Define adolescence and puberty. What is the endpoint of adolescence? Discuss why adolescence seems to be starting earlier and ending later than in the past.
Etymologically, the word ‘adolescence’ derives from Latin ‘adolescere’, which means ‘to grow up’. At its root meaning, it implies a period of physical and psychological development that begins at puberty and ends at young adulthood, transition from the innocence and freedom of childhood to adulthood and its concomitant responsibility, however the time when it starts and ends depends on an individual’s society. Puberty is the process during which an individual matures and becomes capable of sexual reproduction. The main transformations which usually occur during adolescence are physical, cognitive, moral, social, and emotional. The most noticeable changes which occur during adolescence are the physical changes. They prepare an individual for taking on adult roles. Sexual maturity and brain development are the most noticeable transformations that occur in this period. A starting point of puberty is associated with a cascade of hormone release which peaks in the growth of sexual organs and the development of secondary sex characteristics. In males it is marked by muscular development, maturity of external genitalia, a growth of facial hair and changing of voice. When someone who commits a crime is determined to be mentally inadequate to be held accountable for the crimes they have committed, there are things that we do to charge them, but in a lesser way because of their mental capacity. Which begs the question, why are we allowing children to be sentenced to life, when their brains aren’t fully developed? When a child commits a crime we look over that, and stop seeing them as children. We shouldn’t sentence children to a life in prison when their brains are not only underdeveloped, but also missing a good portion of gray matter.
Teenagers in the 1920s Many wonder what teenage life used to look like in the 1920s. Unlike previous generations, young Americans’ average number of years in school were increasing and instead of getting married at sixteen or seventeen, parents were delaying longer before pressuring their children into marriage. In other words, it rapidly became clear that America was entering a new era of life with many new traits. Dating, fashion, and entertainment were influenced by teenagers in the 1920s.

While there were a number of equally amazing organizations on the list, it really came down to my personal experience with this institute. During my senior year of high school, I made it a goal to partake in as many community service opportunities as I could. Coming from a big city, there was no shortage of these and after a few months of searching it led me to the Boys and Girls Club and a few other non-profits.
Q1.3 Explain the impact of adolescent development on a young person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours A1.3 Adolescence is a time of great change for young people when physical changes are happening at an accelerated rate. Puberty is accompanied by physical, psychological and emotional changes adapted to ensure reproductive and parenting success. But adolescence is not just marked by physical changes – young people are also experiencing cognitive, social/emotional and interpersonal changes as well. It marks a transition in risks for depression and other common mental disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders and anti social behaviours. As they grow and develop young people are influenced by outside factors, such as their environment, culture, religion, school and the media.
As they go through this stage young people will begin to solve problems more easily and have an appreciation of other people’s views and opinions. However as they are still inexperienced in life a young person may appear immature at times with regards to their ways of thinking and speech. During the Emotional Development stage, a young person will begin to spend less time with their parents and want to spend more time with their friends socialising instead. A young person may also feel conflicted at times, as they will want the affection from parents, however this is usually short lived as the young person will then also reject it when it is given.
In the past seven decades teens have evolved drastically; from medical to technological advancement, their lives are very different to those of teenagers today. All throughout Catcher in the Rye, and experiences in my personal life, there have been a number of things that prove how much we as teenagers have evolved since the 1940s. For example, although it is widely frowned upon and prohibited for children and teenagers to drink alcohol in todays world, teens do it as much if not more than they did in the 1940’s. On page 149, Holden “Kept sitting there getting drunk”, something that is not ok in todays world. Back in the 1940s, it was widely more acceptable to let teenagers drink excessive amounts of alcohol.
Teenagers are not perfect, and their irrational behavior can lead to poor decisions that could potentially be dangerous and unlawful. A debate has now occurred for many years that deals with the issue of sentencing teens that have committed serious crimes such as murder and robbery. Many people argue that if juveniles commit these crimes that their punishment should be equal to an adults punishment for serious crimes, but juveniles shouldn’t have to worry about their lives getting ruined. Most juveniles and teenagers do not have enough maturity to survive in the adult prison system, and recent brain development research shows us that teenagers brains are not even close to being finished developing. First of all, in order to understand the importance of wellbeing in the early years, it is important to quote lines from Sir Michael Marmot who maintains that “the foundations of virtually every aspect of human development- physical, intellectual, emotional- are laid in early years. What happens during these early years has lifelong effects on many aspects of health and wellbeing- from obesity, heart diseases and mental health to the educational achievement to economic status. ” Wellbeing may normally refer to physical as well as mental state in which development of both aspects of children is satisfactory (Allen et al, 2011). Wellbeing is a broad concept that includes medical as well as social element in defining children`s heath at the early years of their life.
As adolescences enter adulthood, they enter a long transitional period, often known as “emerging adult”. This transitional period takes place over a range of 18 to 25 years old (Santrock, 2013). At this stage, emerging adults are still in exploration in the various aspect of life such as the career path they are interested in, defining their identities and a style of living they would want to adopt. Thus, adolescences who are in transition will be caught with many intense changes and will experience major life events that are all of great importance.
Generativity versus stagnation is the seventh stage of Erik Erikson’s theory of psychosocial development. This stage takes place during middle adulthood between the ages of approximately 40 and 65. During this time, adults strive to create or nurture things that will outlast them; often by parenting children or contributing to positive changes that benefit other people. Contributing to society and doing things to benefit future generations are important needs at the generativity versus stagnation stage of development.
Maturity is the “full development” of an individual, but what does this mean? People have often thought that it just comes naturally over time. Maturity is the ability of a person to act responsible, making the most out of their current circumstances. Some people never reach the state of maturity, while other obtain it at a very young age. In this sense, maturity cannot be given to someone, but must be earned by themselves.
DEVELOPMENT PSYCHOLOGY: REFLECTIVE ESSAY In life of an individual there are several developmental changes or events which occur as continuity of span of life. Some of life developmental stages include infantile, adolescence, maturity, and adulthood. These phases have biological, social, psychological and physiognomic reasons to which an individual completed the course of life. The child behaviour changes and develops in a morally suitable way and adopt the values from his/her parents; new skills and knowledge. Lastly, the Genital stage (12 years and up). This is the last stage of the personality development where puberty begins. During this stage, if all other stages have been successfully achieved, the teenager develops an appropriative sexual behaviour that may lead into a loving relationship, marriage or child birth.
