During the first encounter Miles has with Alaska he becomes mesmerized by her physical appearance and becomes convinced of his love for her almost in an instant (Green, 22). The initial reaction towards Alaska’ physical appearance portrays that physical appearance is, in many cases, how two people become initially attracted to one another (Kalish, 2009). Miles’ initial reaction to her appearance indicates he is stunned and this later builds up into a strong affection towards Alaska. Mile’s affection for Alaska due to her beauty led him to sacrifice himself for her as did his friends. Alaska was able to gain power over her male friends due to her ability to distract someone of her true destructive nature using her beauty. There are many instances …show more content…
Hazel continues to use sexually related humor in order to cover her insecurities about her own body and the pre-existing sexual tensions between the two. While there were a few tense moments between the couple, the novel rarely mentioned sex-related language in any context. A majority of the novel, Augustus used words such as “beautiful” or “gorgeous” (Green, 160) rather than the usual “sexy”. Despite the novel’s lack of sexual activity, the characters engage in intercourse after a romantic visit to the Anne Frank museum accompanied by Peter Van Houten’s secretary, Lidewij Vliegenthart. The encounter is not described in detail but explained briefly as something beautiful and serene (Green, 208). Their relationship is consistently exerted in an innocent nature, lacking any overtly sexual connections. Using innocence in the character’s personalities, Green depicts the emotional connection the characters had to have had in order to fall in love rather than plainly expressing that sexual attraction was the sole factor in creating the character’s attraction towards each

(Darabont, 242). Here, Red takes a more laid back and less explicit approach to portray hope towards Andy. His style is also very poetic, breaking up words into incoherent sentences. With long pauses in between sentences, it allows Red to place emphasis on the words “time”, “slow” and “stop”, portraying a sense of length to his sentence. This results in the captivated tone being seemingly careless while being supportive at the same time.
For instance, the story stated, “Jealousy streaked through me as Larry LaSalle tossed her in the air, letting her fly, defying gravity for a breathless moment, then caught her, pressing her close, their faces almost touching, their lips only an inch or so apart from a kiss before he allowed her to slip down against his body” (Cormier, pg 60). Francis hates Larry and the way he gets along with Nicole, but he loves Nicole and wants to be able to share that type of bond with her. Feelings of love for Nicole and hatred for Larry start to build up more in Francis at this point of the book, causing him to become more complex and dangerous, and the theme of love and hate to become more obvious.

He exploits that the stigma created by other countries of America as the golden state is false when it comes to the reality of categorization, and discrimination of minorities and those who do not conform to the social normalities in the United States. He makes the reader question their culture and identity as he searches for his own.

They fail to search for a man they have an actual emotional connection with, because of this the men feel like the only way to find “love” is becoming rich and flaunting it for everyone to see..
