Physical therapy is a profession that requires repeated assessment of patients and the ability to connect with them to help them in the healing process. There are many different places that physical therapy services are provided such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, sports and fitness facilities, and much more. The career interest I chose for my Senior Project is physical therapy because I enjoy helping people and that's what physical therapy is all about. I want to focus my paper on the types of patients that utilize physical therapy and the duration of treatment for different diagnoses. There are many various reasons patients utilize physical therapy but the four most common are post surgery patients, function loss, injuries, and pain patients. …show more content…
There are many different types of post surgical patients that utilize physical therapy but one more often than the others is a total knee replacement. Knee replacements are common in elderly people and is a treatment for pain and disability in the knee. The most common action that results in the knee replacement surgery is Osteoarthritis, which is the breakdown of joint cartilage that limits movement and causes pain in the knee. After getting a total knee replacement it is recommended to start physical therapy treatment within a few days of the surgery to get the knee moving and getting the mobility back. Physical therapists will help in the rehabilitation process by teaching the patients exercises to help strengthen the leg and increase movement in the knee and also with manual treatment. The exercises will consist of the knee moving and bending and also building muscle in the leg. The knee needs to be bending and moving to prevent the build-up of scar tissue over time. The average duration of treatment for a total knee replacement is 4 to 8 weeks but can change depending on the patient. There are many reasons people utilize physical therapy other than just post surgery. Physical therapists see many patients that have injured …show more content…
Majority of people have to get physical therapy because something is causing them pain. Many things fall in the category of pain but one common reason patients come in is a back sprain. The symptoms of back sprain would be pain with moving or back spasms and muscle cramping. The most often back sprain is a sprain in the lumbar back muscle. The back is prone to the lumbar strain because it holds the weight of your body when bending, moving, or twisting A Lumbar muscle strain is caused when muscle fibers are stretched or torn. Lumbar sprain is caused when ligaments, which are the bands of tissue that hold bones together, are torn from their attachments. A sprain or strain both can result from a sudden injury or from overuse. The soft tissues become inflamed when a sprain or strain occurs and causes pain. A physical therapist helps in the rehabilitation process by providing manual therapy, ice and heat therapy, and stretching
Physical therapy of the lumbar spine could help to provide additional pain relief. Recommend
There are two different options you have after a torn ligament in the knee has occurred, you can undergo surgery or let the ligament heal naturally. Some reasons that you may go the natural route are the following: Partial tears in the ligament, young children with open growth plates, stability is not an issue and not involved in any activities that rely on your ACL daily (Cluett 26). It may be the best option to stay away from surgery if you are not involved in heavy physical activities and take care and rest your leg on its own. How this is done is with rest, ice, compressing and elevation, which is commonly referred to as RICE (Zelman 2). You can rest byy using crutches and laying down to take the weight off the injured leg, and ice should be applied every two hours for twenty minutes at a time while awake.
Instead, the bone near the joints of the femur are removed. During hip replacement, damaged bone, cartilage, and femoral head are removed then replaced with a prosthesis. There are many reasons why one might need hip replacement because of damage, however they are most commonly caused by age and repeated motion of wear and tear. There are some diseases such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, and bone tumors, that a patient would have developed in order to be recommended to receive this treatment. More often than not, hip replacement was the next action to take for relieving pain (Total Hip Replacement).
At 12 years, overall survivorship was 64% and almost half of the patients had substantial ambulatory dysfunction (i.e. severe limp or inability to walk) post-operatively. However, Harris Hip scores increased from 46 to 76 points at most recent follow-up. While we cannot discount the notable disadvantages associated with proximal femoral replacement, further study is certainly warranted to determine its role in revision
I am excited about the opportunity to attend the Regis University Physical Therapy Program. I am especially interested in the clinical emphasis at Regis and the international clinical experiences. Additionally, I appreciate the emphasis on hands-on clinical education, manual therapy, and using research findings to improve the care of patients. I would enjoy attending PT school in Denver, but I also welcome the opportunity to gain clinical experience in both a rural setting, as well as at another site outside of Colorado. Growing up in Alaska exposed me to people from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
I will be assisting physical therapists in providing physical therapy treatments and procedures. I will have several different task to do as a physical therapist: monitor patient progress or responses to treatments, prepare medical instruments or equipment for use, prepare medical reports or documents,
Since therapists are skilled and incredibly knowledgeable with musculoskeletal pain, individuals should consider seeing a physical therapists. In addition, patients reported top-level of fulfillment when they received active recuperation through direct access versus doctor referral (Davenport et al., 2014, p. 22). When in pain never hesitate to be seen by a physical
“Ow! My knee! I think I need to go see a physical therapist.” This is an example of one of the many reasons people go to see a certified physical therapist. “Physical Therapists, sometimes called PTs, help injured or ill people improve their movement and manage their pain” (Bureau 1).
For example, upon seeing a new patient, a PT must create a treatment plan specifically designed to the patient to ensure one hundred percent recovery. In this plan, the PT must keep in mind short-term and long-term treatments that could change depending on how quickly the patient is recovering. A PT then proceeds to rehabilitate the patient through different forms of therapy including: massage therapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound, traction, and therapeutic exercise. During the patient’s therapy session a PT will document the patient’s progress to see if he or she must alter their plan of action. Typically most physical therapists work in private practice, also known as an outpatient clinic.
It is actually normal for patients to inquire about how long their surgery will take, so this is something you should not be afraid to ask your doctor. Even though you will likely be under anesthesia the whole time, this is another aspect of the surgery that is just for patients to be aware of before the operation. What is the expected recovery time? : How long it takes you to recover will depend on various things, including how invasive the surgery is and the extent of your ACL injury. The recovery time can put a damper on any plans you may have made to go on vacation or how soon you can get back to playing the sport you love, so it is important to know and be prepared to rest till you are healed.
With rehab and physical therapy, the patient will feel almost back to their pre-injury self, but they are very suseptible for a re-tear. Many
A ligament is responsible for connecting the end of your bone to another. When the ligament of your wrist is torn, you’ll experience symptoms of pain, swelling and bruising around the affected area. Just like a jammed finger, if your wrist sprain is only mild or moderate, you can treat it with rest, ice and compression of a bandage. You can also elevate your arm above the level of your heart to promote blood flow and reduce the swelling. Wrist

First, Physical therapists make an observation, which is the observing phase of examination of the patient’s condition. Once they do this process of examination, they can have an idea about if the patients have severe problems such as abnormal curvature of spine or joint subluxation, which according to introduction to physical therapy, joint subluxation is “(a condition in which a joint partially dislocates)”. In addition, in the phase of examination there are observed many musculoskeletal injuries, which are disorders that affect the human body’s movement or musculoskeletal system such as, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Therefore specific attention is paid to the standing and sitting postures of the patient. Equally important, parts
Physical therapy is the treatment of disease, injury, or distortion by physical methods such as massage, heat treatment, and exercise rather than by drugs or surgery. The goals are to help joints move better and to restore or increase your flexibility, strength, endurance, coordination, and balance. This essay will discuss the extent of agreement that physical therapy is vital to be used as non-surgical treatments by people experiencing back and neck pain from time to time. To begin with, taking physical therapy sessions can regain original capabilities. People whom suffered from severe pain every day, tend to lose some of their abilities in handling their daily activities.
