Women are often looked down on by many in work settings, so the outcome was decided that they should be paid less than men. People from all over are working harder than ever to try to make equal pay in the United States a reality, but prejudice towards women and their abilities still remains strong. As stated in the article “Women Deserve Equal Pay”, since the Equal Pay Act of 1963, the wage gap has only decreased by 18 cents. In 2009, it was uncovered that although it had been 44 years since the Equal Pay Act was initiated, the gap was closed at a rate of less than half a penny each year.
The social problem that I am going to introduce is the gender pay gap. This social problem does not fit into the core American value of equality because, quite obviously, having a gap in pay between the genders does not fit the basic definition of “equality”. If all variables are accounted for, a woman, on average, makes 78 cents to every dollar a man makes. With simple math, we can see that there is a discrepancy of 22 cents between women and men’s respective pays. Since the United States was founded on the ideal of “equality for all”, one would presume that this basic principle would extend to equal pay for equal work as well.

In my opinion the wage gap is used to make the need of feminism stronger by making people think that there is still a problem with equal pay due to gender. The wage gap is the idea that if a man and a woman were hired for the same position, the women would make 23% less than the man per week. The entirety of the argument has been proven to be a lie time after time again, but many feminists continue to advertise and protest it as fact, but they never seem to teach the full truth behind it.
The feminist movement has made many ground breaking accomplishments over the years however has it truly gone to the root of the problem. Even though women 's lives improved during the 1920s in many ways, they still faced inequality in the workplace. Women gained the right to vote and new freedom in the 1920 's, but they were still discriminated against in the workplace. They were prevented from most well-paying jobs and middle and upper-class white women were expected to stay home instead. Most poorer women still held jobs that were low paying and struggled to work to support themselves and their families. Women worked longer hours and got paid significantly less than men did.

With all the people who had watched this event, women should be paid equally or more than men, but due to sexism from the administration, the women were not paid equally. When it comes to making claims it is hard unless there is enough information that can prove that the complainant was actually discriminated against because they were a man or woman. Mary can bring a claim for gender discrimination against her company because she has determined that because she is a woman that she makes thousands of dollars less than her male counterparts. There has been no reason given to why Mary makes that much less than her male counterparts. The issue with this scenario is that we don’t know if the organization that Mary works for uses the seniority, merit, or other pay systems. Most of the male counterparts could have received merit pay based off of their performance and evaluations throughout the last five years.
