The Jararaca Pit Viper On page 26 of his book, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon, David Grann presents information on the Jararaca pit viper. He stated that the Jararaca is the most venomous snake in the Americas. One bite will cause a person to bleed from the eyes and become a corpse piece by piece. I found this interesting because I had never heard of the Jararaca and would like to research more information about them. Throughout my essay I will discuss the physical description, mating and reproduction habits, and behavior of the Jararaca pit viper.

You Must Read This Book I related to Jon Krakauer’s book, Into Thin Air, when the deadly storm caused heroic guides and clients to quickly rally whoever they could to save themselves and nearby clients in a safe and efficient manner. On Saturday morning before Memorial Day in 2012, my home was struck by lightning during a fairly calm storm. There was no warning at all, just like the dreadful blizzard on Mount Everest. I had to recover from a blinding light and ground shattering explosion to realize my family needed to get out of the house. I ran to my parents’ room where my sister already held my mom’s hand and my dad collecting his cell phone and fire department radio to report a lightning strike.

There are multiple ways to get sick but the most frequent ways are altitude sickness / lack of oxygen, and the cold. The Base Camp alone is 17,000 ft. up the mountain. Jon Krakauer and his expedition stayed at the base camp for about 6 weeks with climbs to the camps above in between to adjust to the altitude. This is due to the fact that if they ascend too fast they could suffer from HAPE (High Altitude Pulmonary Edema) which can cause heavy breathing and the lungs filling with fluids, this is extremely fatal if not treated quickly. A disease similar to this is HACE (High Altitude Cerebral Edema) which is caused by being at high altitudes and it causes the brain to swell and fill with fluids and can cause disorientation and nausea and eventually, death.
Geology of the Hawaiian Island Chain The chain of Hawaiian Islands formed as the Pacific plate moved over a hot spot in the mantle of the Earth. The plate slowly moves northwestward at a rate of about 32 miles per million years. The northwestern islands are older and generally smaller due to prolonged exposure and erosion. Plate tectonics, types of volcanoes, hot spots, and sea mounts, are all an important part of the geology of the hawaiian island chain.
During the eruption, according to abc.go, it stated that “57 people were killed, and that 200 miles of roads with hundreds of homes were destroyed.” “After the eruption of 1980, ash was sent in the air and people needed to wear masks, also, helicopters came to search for anyone who survived,” it stated from getrevising.co.uk. Indonesia is located on a subduction zone, which the Indo-Australian plate subducts under the Eurasian plate. At subduction zones, water that flowed in the hot mantle cause the mantle to partially melt. Eventually, the magma cooled on the surface and created a volcano. Since the volcano spewed out pyroclastic flow, this indicates that the magma was high in silica and therefore high in viscosity. Explosive volcanoes typically occur at subduction zones.
