The main purpose of this chapter is to determine the Founding Fathers’ motives for creating the Constitution by analyzing a secondary source by Woody Holton, and several primary sources. Frist, I will begin with the secondary source, “Unruly Americans and the Origins of the Constitution” by Woody Holton. Mr. Holton’s main purpose was to locate the motivation behind the Constitution in developments in the states (page 90). Mr. Holton addressed several grievances for possible motives of the Founding Fathers’. First, the excessive democracy that acerbated many Americans, the runaway inflation caused by the farmers who were allowed to satisfy their debt to creditors with property and good instead of hard currency, and the Revolutionary War that
Tobias Wolff’s novel Old School conveys the ideas of honor, identity, voice and competition through the experiences of a boy who attends a preparatory school in the 1960s. The unnamed narrator’s actions are caused by the visiting writers, who definitely influence the narrator more negatively. Although the purpose of the famous writers visiting the school is to influence the narrator at the prep school more positively by helping him build character and allowing him to pursue perseverance, in reality the pressure the writers add discourages the narrator from finding his own voice and adds even more competition to an already extremely competitive school. As I engage this unit’s Read and Attend assignments, I find that my understanding of plagiarism is not as fully developed as I had previously thought. Our Unit 3 Attend assignment shares that “in a general sense plagiarism may be caused by carelessness” and these circumstances frequently precipitate the lack of care required while writing (Bethel University, 2014, p. 11). The academic integrity tutorial provided additional information which I found valuable as well. Common themes within each unit assignment provide strands of continuity, while assisting with a more comprehensive understanding. It is my opinion, the type of plagiarism that is hardest for me to avoid is “plagiaphrasing”, also known as “lazy paraphrasing” (Bethel University, 2014, p. 12).
The book, A Brilliant Solution: Inventing the American Constitution covers many more topics than just the making of the American constitution that Americans know today. It discusses events prior to the constitution that made the founding fathers have to revisit the governmental structure they built. The founding fathers knew that they did not want a big centralized government since that is what they were escaping from in Britain. With that in mind, they gave a lot of power to the state governments, which reinforced the states not wanting to cooperate with each other since no one was really telling them or had the power to tell them to unite under one nationality. America with open arms has accepted the role of the world’s police. It could be argued that it created the role for itself. That is the premise of Andrew Bacevich’s Washington Rules. Bacevich discusses over sixty years of American Foreign Policy, from Truman to now, to explain the premise of the “Washington Rules.” The Washington Rules is about American militarist belief that Americans must “lead, save, liberate, and ultimately transform the world”, this could only be accomplished by an idea described by Bacevich as “the sacred trinity”. According to all North American post-secondary institutions’ policies, cheating and copying of someone else’s words and thoughts as one’s own, is a serious academic offence and can be punished by expulsion. Conestoga College (Conestoga) and University of Toronto (U of T) also have the serious academic offense in regard to plagiarism. For example, in section 15 of Conestoga’s policy, it states that the students found violating the policy will be issued the following penalties, and on page 18 of U of T’s policy, it states that plagiarism is considered a serious offence against intellectual honesty and intellectual property. There are some similarities and differences in regard to plagiarism policy. Even though both schools have similar thought and range of plagiarism, Conestoga has harsher penalties than U of T.
Carter G Woodson is amongst many well known African Americans in History. Woodson was an African American writer and historian known as “ The Father of Black history month”. He dedicated himself to the field of African-American history, working to make sure that the subject was taught in schools and studied by scholars. He was the author of more than thirty books, his best known book was The Miseducation of the negro, published in 1933 and is still relevant today. He also founded the Association for the study of African American Life and History, the mission was to promote, research, and share information about Black life, history and culture to the global community.
Tobias Wolff’s Old School is a novel surrounding themes of plagiarism and relationships. At a deeper look, this bildungsroman encompasses ideas of self-discovery as well as individual growth. The plot follows a purposely unnamed narrator through his journey at an all-male prep school in the late 1960’s. Authors are invited to the prestigious school yearly, fostering a bitter and excessive competition between the boys to win the audience of the aforementioned authors. Lacking in female figures around the school, every competition, award, and goal are feminized by the students. Lennie Irvin speaks that this writing style is argumentative and analytical and states the three characteristics. The literary arts became a powerful tool in communicating different worldviews and the integrating of historical moments in time. This movement created a unique blending of different races to integrate through literary arts causing many cultures to unite internationally. Literature encouraged intellectual American’s to be a part of the change in their communities. For many people, this movement triggered an internal need for social and cultural change. People wonder what is so wrong with cheating or plagiarism. As long as they get the work done or pass the course. But do these students know the real consequences of cheating and plagiarism. Viewing different people aspect of this problem, this happens everywhere. In Brent Staples article “Cutting and Pasting: A senior thesis by (Insert Name)”, he is trying to get through to individuals so that they could stop doing this and the consequences. People presume that cheating/plagiarism is an okay thing to do because no one really informed it on them. Knowing the consequences will give people a reality check on life.
One of the most crucial traits a scholar can develop is a high level of self-efficacy which is essential to academic success. The ability to achieve and to recognize that success can come from being industrious should be the deterring factor for a student who considers committing the act of plagiarism. What is plagiarism one might ask? Voelker, Love & Pentina (2012) define plagiarism as, “putting forward another’s work as your own” (p. 37). This very pervasive problem plagues the education system, and many researchers and psychologist seek to explain the driving force behind students’ academic dishonesty. Woith, Jenkins & Kerber (2012, states that, “The Center for Academic Integrity (CAI) defines academic integrity as ‘a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to five fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility (Center for Academic Integrity, n.d.)’ (p. 253). Whether the act of plagiarism is knowingly or inadvertently done, it is still a moral dilemma. Honz, Kiewra & Yang (2010) posit that, “most studies report that about 75 percent of students cheat” (p. 10). As a result, this action plan is tailored towards showcasing the various methodologies and resources that student nurses can utilize in order to combat the act of plagiarism before, during and after an assignment.
The term plagiarism is used to describe the unauthorized acquisition or use of pictures, informations, work or ideas intentionally or unintentionally and passing them off as their own ideas. In “Plagiarism as a Threat to Public Identity”, Shonda Gibson and Stephen Reysen of Texas A&M University -Commerce examines the experience of plagiarism as an illustration of an interpersonal threat to the public identity. In this article the author argues and analysis that, people who practice plagiarism by stealing one's ideas and making it their own legitimately do it on purpose attempting to harm the participants public image which leads to subsequent confrontation with the victim involved.
