This recent controversy has raised questions concerning the ethicality and legality of fetal tissue donations and research. It has also spurred debate over the government’s role in funding and authorizing clinics like Planned Parenthood, especially given the ideologically divise nature of the services it performs. As a result of this controversy, advocates and legislators are pushing for changes in federal policy, particularly changes that will defund or significantly reduce funding for Planned Parenthood. Such action could have significant effects on the conduction of scientific research, women’s rights, and women’s access to affordable and accessible health care nationwide.
