How does this all relate to modern day issues? While the aforementioned essay within her book was not necessarily written all too long ago, feminism has changed and adapted to fit in with younger generations. As of right now feminism is currently quite the hot topic throughout the media in both western regions as well as more conservative regions. Oppression continues to remain hidden within “chivalrous” behaviors and ideals as presented by male dominated institutions that attempt to make decisions on behalf of women. Take for example, the war on Planned Parenthood and female healthcare. Currently, the women’s healthcare organization, Planned Parenthood has been within the eye of the media and the talk of the politicians for its practices, mainly concerning abortions procedures performed within these facilities. The following quote should hopefully secure the idea that oppression is still very much a prominent part of society that affects women, “We look silly, incompetent, weak, and generally contemptible” Frye writes, regarding the differences between female restrains and male restraints, “Our exercise of this discipline tends to low esteem and self-esteem. It does not benefit us. It fits in a network of behaviors through which we constantly announce to others our membership in a lower caste and our unwillingness and/or inability to defend our bodily or moral integrity” (16). In essence, this quote displays how women are mocked for attempting to develop their own independence. The mocking results in a lowered self-esteem, which prevents women from progressing by keeping women below the social standing of men. By doing such, women lose their rights and their ability to control the sanctity of their own bodies as well as their morals
The Constitution was written to give the United States government structure. The Constitution grants rights to the federal government, but also to the individual people. The Griswold v Connecticut case first came about from a law enacted in 1879 by the state of Connecticut. The law stated “Any person who uses any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purposes of preventing conception shall be fined not less than forty dollars or imprisoned not less than sixty days”. This prevented people in the state of Connecticut to be unable to use any type, or method of birth control.
It’s also worth noting that federal law already forbids Planned Parenthood from using the funds it receives from the government for abortions. So though the fight over Planned Parenthood might be about abortion, Planned
Planned Parenthood gave way to a change in mentality among more women and helped to raise awareness that abortion is a constitutional act that should be protected. My assigned case in particular is a landmark case because it gave way into a larger part of the women’s rights movement as well as opening the door for allowing a better regulation of abortion among each individual state. Cases that affected Casey v. Planned Parenthood were the decisions in Roe v. Wade, City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health and Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Based on the decision made in this particular case, the rulings of City of Akron v. Akron Center for Reproductive Health and Thornburgh v. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists were overturned. Twenty-three and a half years after this case was out of the Supreme Court, we as informed people who are able to critically think and debate about many issues, have trouble regulating abortion and abortion law because of the issue of law getting in the way of morality and the common man.
Planned Parenthood is a topic that is continuously discussed in correlation with the concept of money as many believe that it “...emphasizes abortions instead of preventative care” (Attira). Because of birthrights, abortions, and the controversy that surrounds such issues, many individuals believe that the government should not be responsible for providing funding. Therefore, actually defunding Planned Parenthood is often brought up as a solution to the highly-debated consensus of government-funded healthcare services. Although many believe that creating a barrier between opinion and action is a positive push, actually defunding the program would be more catastrophic than perceived. Defunding Planned Parenthood would mean blocking and preventing individuals from receiving the health care that they are reliant on.
Planned Parenthood is a National issue fighting for abortion access, giving women facing an unintended pregnancy must have access to safe, legal abortion services. Birth control and the fact all people deserve access to birth control and other preventive care, health care equality and the idea all people should have equal access to reproductive health care. For years politicians in Congress and statehouses across the country have attacked Planned Parenthood’s patients’ access to care. But I believe Planned Parenthood’s health centers provide high quality, affordable reproductive health care, to 2.4 million people across the country. When politicians talk about defunding Planned Parenthood, they really mean depriving patients who depend on public
Planned Parenthood is more than a center to receive an abortion, but because of the pro-life versus pro-choice movement, everyone is missing that vital point. It 's not about defeating your opposing enemy anymore, it 's about health care for men and women all over the
Even today the fight for reproductive health care has been problematic. Planned parenthood stands as an advocate for woman’s health. Planned Parenthood has strived to make a difference in woman’s reproductive health care and continues to implement their goals as stated in their mission statement: Planned Parenthood believes in the fundamental right of each individual, throughout the world, to manage his or her fertility, regardless of the individual's income, marital status, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, national origin, or residence. (Planned Parenthood) Planned Parenthood demonstrates their mission statement to the fullest when performing services for anyone who walks into their available centers.
Flippen 1 Shaunice Flippen Planned Parenthood is considered a public interest group, which are citizen activist groups that try to represent what they deem to be the interest of the public at large. The most recent controversy in the news today is the proposal by the Republican Party to defund Planned Parenthood for one year, which is expected to fail, which could shut down the government. President Obama and Senate Democrats are willing to shut down the federal government to ensure that tax dollars keep flowing to the Planned Parenthood organization, one of their biggest political allies and financial contributor of millions of dollars to the Democratic Presidential campaign and Party. What has the power to take a life has the power to preserve it, what has the power to love has the power to hate, what has the power to make the world a better place has the power to ruin it. The monumental power of choice resides in all of us and dictates the course of history. But the choice to live is one right that is being stolen every time a mother says no to the growing baby inside of her. Planned Parenthood is an industry that is worth 1 billion dollars that builds its foundation on the death of one million babies a year. In comparison the Holocaust, which was a reign of terror over the “inferior” populations of Europe, had over 11 million people who were helplessly murdered in the span of 12 years.
During this week, we have covered numerous topics, none more prominent than the oppression of women. Everyone had different opinions, allowing me to take into account different views on the issue. In one of the texts we examined, “Oppression”, Marilyn Frye, a philosopher, debates the subjugation of women. She states the cultural customs that causes oppression of women. I do agree with her view that women are oppressed, but I do not agree that it is just women.
Awesome Title in “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” by Adrienne Rich The feminist movement has grown and spread in the past decade. Women all over the world are standing up for basic rights, such as education, that all people, regardless of gender can enjoy. This movement is not a new one, though. Women from times past had already started paving the way towards some of the rights women have today.
Despite oppression women have always resisted. Women have resisted oppression in many ways. Women have responded to their multiple sources of oppression of sexism, racism, heterosexism and colonialism. Women resisted oppression by standing up for their rights. Women have been left out of the discussion of oppression for centuries.

Thesis Statement: Abortion has been a major topic throughout the years, there has been much debate between pro-choice and pro-life but if people can come together to reach comprises it could help society make positive progress. There are many different views and opinions on abortion in today’s world. Introduction Hook: Since the beginning of time, the existence of women and men has been undeniably considered as one of the integral factors that forms our society as it is today. Despite their parallel existence and contribution to the growth of the society, it was considered that women were not treated equal to men both in domestic and working circumstances, leading to a wave of movements demanding equal rights for women, known as feminism. Despite its success in claiming benefits for mistreated women in the past, recent feminism actions and point of views have gone above their original purpose, and created negative impacts and false mindset as its consequences, 2. Credibility I have done some in-depth research about this matter to prepare for the speech, and I myself do not stand for contemporary feminist. 3.
