Planned Parenthood: The Oppression Of Women

“In the year 2004, there were approximately 1.37 million abortions performed in the United States” (Chew 143). Since 1973 and even before, abortion has raged into a hot-topic issue among the press, politicians, and even doctors; among many other people. This topic has been disputed since even before the late Nineteenth Century. During the 1940s, it even became a social norm to raid the abortionists’ offices. From that time on, the abortion debate has been brought into light many times. Abortion is a never-ending controversial topic, that is why it is important to examine the definition of a fetus, pro-life arguments, and pro-choice arguments.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a nonprofit organization that establishes itself on health care, functioning as an outreach program as well as a provider of various medical services. The organization was developed upon the idea that women should have easy, obtainable access to information and care to ensure a healthy life. During this week, we have covered numerous topics, none more prominent than the oppression of women. Everyone had different opinions, allowing me to take into account different views on the issue. In one of the texts we examined, “Oppression”, Marilyn Frye, a philosopher, debates the subjugation of women. She states the cultural customs that causes oppression of women. I do agree with her view that women are oppressed, but I do not agree that it is just women. I believe that men as a gender are also oppressed.

The feminist movement has grown and spread in the past decade. Women all over the world are standing up for basic rights, such as education, that all people, regardless of gender can enjoy. This movement is not a new one, though. Women from times past had already started paving the way towards some of the rights women have today. The work is not yet complete, and is evident by looking at the domination of women throughout the centuries, specifically the 19th and 20th century, which was the height of the women’s rights movement. By analyzing two literary works from two different eras, “The Yellow Wallpaper” written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the late 19th century and “Aunt Jennifer’s Tigers” written by Adrienne Rich in the mid-20th century, one can conclude that while there have been improvements to women’s rights, there is still discrimination prevalent.
