Emily Dickinson was a reclusive poet from the nineteenth century who never ventured past her property for roughly twenty years. Dickinson was born in Amherst Massachusetts in December of 1830. She lived with and was the daughter of Edward Dickinson, an influential businessman in their town of Amherst, and Emily Norcross Dickinson. Emily also resided with her older brother, Austin, and her younger sister, Lavinia. Amherst Academy was the school that Dickinson first attended when she was fifteen years old, her father was the treasurer for a short period, and her ancestors were heavy influences in the founding of the academy. She commonly used the beats of syllables referred to as iambic meter and depending on how many syllables, that prefix would need to be added to the beginning of ‘meter ' for it to be correct. Information about meter can be further understood with other types of meter in the quote, “...most of her stanzas as has been pointed out, are the ordinary hymn stanzas, the eight-six-eight-six ‘common meter’ and the six-six-eight-six ‘short meter’ being especially frequent.” (Frye 648) The quote is displaying that common meter is the area of formatting in which Dickinson enjoyed creating, as well as showing different versions of the style. The common meter is composed of alternating lines of iambic tetrameter and iambic trimeter. These terms of meter mean that one line of poetry will contain four beats when the syllables of each word in the line are counted. Then, the following line of the poem will have three beats within the single line. Emily frequently utilized these tools within her creative process to relieve pain since she had suffered from mental health issues and breakdowns throughout her life that caused sadness in which her poems express. She wrote to put her pain and misery into a song using poetry to express her feelings (Ferlazzo 92). Emily’s stress of her family life as well as her mental issues and a physical issue with her eye caused severe anxiety in her life which resulted in wanting to get her pain and to express her feelings to be relieved.
