When the first responders are not prepare for what ever comes accros their lines, the situation can get out of control. Officers need to have acces to easy to use equipment when their out in the field receiving emergency calls. Throught out the years, technology has given these responders softwares that has made police reaction much faster. For example, GPS system, CAD mapping, and pin mapping are tools that can help locate property and people in a tremendous speed (Lenio L.W., 2012). According to Tuscaloosca and Oxford county, their personell have become more effective during an emergency.
It is becoming more important for law enforcement officers (LEOs) to have video recordings of civilian contacts recorded from their own perspectives. Many times critical incidents happen out of range of the vehicle cameras. Just like most things in life, technology has found a way to make advancements in everything we do. Advancements in law enforcement are of no exception. Technology has put cameras in squad cars and now on our officers, but unlike vehicle-mounted cameras, the body-worn cameras travel with officers.
Evidence 1 in the article By: Jay Stanley for the American Civil Liberties Union describes body cameras as “They are small clip on cameras or headsets.” (Stanley). Which means every officer should have one. It 's not like they are something that is going to be hard to work around or work with. Evidence 2 in an article By: PoliceOne staff they speak out by saying “Video is a great equalizer.” (Police staff) So many cops are planning on turning more towards them. This relates back because video truly is what happened you can 't change the video on the card when it comes out of the body camera and onto a computer to be played in front of everyone.
However, I believe that police officers should wear body cameras because it prevents excessive force and discrimination, allows to harness the technology, and is a tool for evidence gathering. First of all, some police officers think that body cameras could affect police moral and recruitment. However, it prevents excessive force and racial discrimination. When police officers are using body cameras they have on mind the recording, so they will be conscious to behave; as a result, the excessive force and discrimination could decrease. As the author mentions that Researchers “found that officers who wore cameras used force less often…” (3).
Body cameras are useful devices that show what exactly happened moments before the crime or accident took place. According to the article, in Missouri of 2014, a teenager was shot and killed. After this incident people protested and admonished for officers to have body cameras on
All around there are police departments that are starting to use body cameras. The departments that are starting to use these body cameras are showing benefits of using of them. They are not cheap but there are funds that are helping them buy these cameras. The body cameras also are providing a better understanding of all events when they happen. The use of these body cameras have brought out many benefits in using them, but there are also downsides to using them.
With technology advancing, we are able to use technology to monitor and examine. As the encounters with officers that may result in violent outbursts, civilians are concerned with police brutality and their rights. Body-worn video video devices as tools can be an insurance for the compliance of the fourth amendment. The sole reason for favor of police body cams are due to the unbiased record of what exactly occurred during an officer 's interaction. With this, testimonies cannot be distorted since there would be a new way to assert evidence.
There are many other methods can be used in place of racial profiling. One method that could be used is called the "call-in" approach which was created by Professor David Kennedy who is a criminal justice professor at John Jay college. The "call-in" approach is when law enforcement or community leaders request meetings with gang members, and drug dealers. During these meetings families of gun violence and ex offender victims are there to talk to these gang members and drug dealers. They give them a chance to stop committing crimes or they will not only arrest them they will also arrest anyone else involved in their crimes.
“....designed to read e-mails and other online communications between suspected criminals, terrorist and spies.” This part means that the technology was used for positive reasons. It was used to try and keep people from doing bad and even horrific things to others. “Not only can the system help combat crime, it can be used in times of natural disasters.” This quote by Lauren Lloyd from “Big Brother Is Watching You, Long Beach: New Police Surveillance System Unveiled”, is talking about how they have a surveillance system and is helpful in helping solve crimes. It is basically used in the purpose to keep the city safe and keeping its people safe and sound. All of these articles are similar to the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four because they all talk about surveillance of the people.
Over the years Police Officers reiterate that they are the law, but their actions seem to be above the law. They believe that whatever they do can be justified. Police officers has used the basic communication skills of organizing their thoughts, emotions and behavior while their cameras are rolling. The union leader said, “officers appear to have adjusted their cameras” because in was proven before in Baltimore. Chief of Police, Peter Newsham (DC) believes that officers were already doing what was right without body cameras because there is no change in their behavior.
