I believe that, to an extent, police officers should be held accountable for their actions that lead to the death of an individual in their custody. By to an extent, I mean that if the police officer had the power to prevent the death and did not, or put the individual in the way of harm, or was even out right the cause with no explanation they should be held accountable for their actions. Police brutality is a huge problem right now, and sure it's better than it was before it still is a problem today. Reasons for police brutality today are because of inadequate police training, police officers with major complexes, racism, fear, and lack of legal repercussions for police officers who use excessive force. Because of the lack of repercussions police officers often get away with hurting and killing individuals like Freddie Carlos Gray Jr, whose murders cases were dropped and acquitted and Khalil from the book “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas, whose killer was not indicted. Police officers should be held accountable for their own actions just like everyone else. …show more content…

On the night Khalil was killed, both him and Starr faced police brutality when Officer 115, Brian Cruise had used unnecessary force on two 16 year olds. Throughout the story people kept trying to justify Khalil's death and downplay the importance of his life. Despite the fact that Starr did everything right, people kept stereotyping Khalil by using the argument “He was a drug dealer”. Later in the story in chapter 22 it is announced that the grand jury decided to not indict Officer Brian for Khalil's death.
