INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of The Study
Communication is considered important to everyday life as a part of social life due to its function to convey information, sharing ideas, interact, and so on. In doing a communication, one thing that cannot be forgotten is how to maintain a good relationship to others in order to not emerge a sort of conflicts, offensiveness, etc. Hence, in order to do a good and proper communication, the answer is politeness.

A talk-show is selected as the data of this study because the use of politeness strategies applied in the talk-show. Based on the theory of politeness strategy stated by Brown and Levinson (1987), there are four main types of politeness strategy, such as: bald on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness, and off-record.
This study would analyze the positive politeness strategies in James Corden’s interview on Recode Decode talk-show’s transcription episode October 20th 2016 when the host, Kara Swisher was interviewing a famous television presenter, James Corden completely with the functions based on the theory proposed by Tillie and Bruder (1985) about language

The scope of discussion of this study would be focusing on:
1. The fifteen types of positive politeness strategies.
2. The language functions.
1.5 Research Method
The selection of appropriate research method will contribute to the success of every study. In this writing, the research method consists of data source, method and technique of collecting data, method and technique of analyzing data, and method and technique of presenting the analysis.
1.5.1 Data Source
Both of the spoken data (the podcast of the talk-show) and the written data (the transcription of the talk-show) are available in the official website of Recode Decode talk-show, www.recode.net. However, this study would like to use the transcription of the talk-show as the data. The data that would be analyzed is a talk-show episode October 20th 2016 when the host of Recode Decode, Kara Swisher was interviewing a famous television presenter, James Corden.
The talk-show is selected as the data in this study due to the positive politeness strategies that frequently used in the data.
1.5.2 Method and Technique of Collecting
The Transition of Civility In today’s commercial age, many of us have experienced awkwardness in the conversations with service workers. In “The Civility Glut”, Barbara Ehrenreich addresses the issue of excessive formality and politeness within day to day communications in America. She begins with examples of the so called “civility glut” in the popular media and her personal life, then gives background information explaining why this is happening. Her transition in rhetorical approach from comedic narrative to thoughtful definition has played an important role in directing reader’s attention and opinion.
Barbara Ehrenreich describes to us what she believes today’s world thinks about the definition of civility. Her purpose is to argue about the misconception of civility. She believes that “competitive gratitude” is not what having etiquette is about and that it is absolutely absurd to be forced into fake politeness. Ehrenreich uses satire and irony to clearly differentiate between civility and unnecessary flattery. In her second sentence, Ehrenreich uses the oxymoron “heck-no” and “with all due respect” together to mock the critics that claim that America needs a little more civility.
This task has allowed me to explore and internalize the relationship between language and speeches, as well as providing me with a better understanding and application of its specificities. Christianity, one of the world 's major religions, revolves around love and the importance of loving others. In The Bible mentions to Christians, "Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (Leviticus 19:18). Love is of utmost importance in Christianity. In this story, a boyfriend, who does not manifest love and is a hypocrite and a sinner, to his loving girlfriend who is carrying their future baby. The boyfriend, changes and transforms his views of himself throughout the short story.
In addition to being one of the most entertaining shows to binge in the background of daily life, The Office is considered to be one of the more quotable comedies the 2000s brought us. The show’s compilation of lovable and often stereotypical characters provided us with nine seasons worth of memorable tomfoolery, character development, and one-liners. But for the purpose of this paper we will be looking beyond the plethora of “Worlds Best Boss” mugs and “That’s what she said” jokes, and taking a cold, analytical look at The Office to determine what the show offers in regard to interpersonal communication. In the first episode we are introduced to the shows connotation of conflict as we observe Dwight Schrute demonstrating a competitive conflict style in his reaction to Jim Halpert’s solidifying Dwight’s personal belongings in a jello mold.
In Paul Ford’s “How to Be Polite” he argues that politeness is essential to success and self-development, thus creating opportunities that would otherwise not exist. He’s right being polite creates opportunities, but there are times where being unpolite can do the same. I think that being rude can also bring success and new opportunities depending on the situation. Many jobs are in demand for professional, stern, leaders, and by being polite one’s kindness may be taken as a weakness, which can hinder things from getting done effectively. My thesis is important because it’s essential to have a balance between being both polite and unpolite to prevent being taken for granted but to also prevent you from burning your bridges with others.
During this semester, I gained a lot of skills and knowledge about interpersonal relations. As a human being, as a member of the "global village", everyone need to communicate with others. It is important to learn how to communicate well and how to build a healthy and positive interpersonal relationship with others. Like the textbook’ name “Looking Out Looking In”, we looked in the communication itself, looked out the language barrier, nonverbal messages and effective listening, and looked at relational dynamics. I learned and recognized about how environmental factors can impact our communication.
Commonly when approaching a peer, teacher, or a stranger, the first phrase to be said is often a form of polite speech. Polite speech can be categorized by the use of phrases that show regards for others. With some people backing the sense that what is said is portrayed as literal speech, most of it is said for the sake of sounding welcoming and responsible. Having polite speech implemented into people’s day to day lives serves the function of creating a well developed impression of a person.
Civility and Incivility Communication Behavior analyze Defensive and Nondefense Behavior In the workplace, workers communicate with each other’s in different way because of their characteristics and personal problem in life affect behavior in communication. The most common communication I will be comparing and contrast between civility and incivility. Also, this affect the message comes from defensive and nondefense communication. It affects in working environment, the feeling or emotions by proving a real life examples behavior approach in scenarios.
Moreover, the definition of face has been widely debated. I intend to discuss the most salient issues related to the concept of face as it applies to the study of politeness. Goffman’s version of Face Goffman (1967:5) defined face as being: The positive social value a person effectively claims for himself by the line others assume he has taken during a particular contact.
Introduction: The process of communicating successfully with our family, friends, co-workers, business associates and people is one of the most critical skills. Communication is such a key part of life that I often tell to a person that “Its no use of someone if he/she really don’t know by associates people in their work place or area of field”. Communication makes us to be known of others, good or bad that depends on usability of a person communication. And, it is up to each of us to learn to communicate well with those who are important to us.
