The United States of America was formed on July 4, 1776 and since then has evolved and changed into the America we know today. Much has happened in US since 1776 such as women’s suffrage. However is the society of the United States of America getting better, worse, or staying the same socially, politically, and economically?
Throughout history the US has socially never strayed far from being centered around people’s appearances, of which gender and race are a great part. In 1776 through 1830, a woman’s legal status depended on if she was married. Widows and single women could not buy, own, or sell personal property and work any job in which being a male wasn’t a requirement. Married women’s dependence on their husbands was basically obligatory.

Invented using new technology there are now bombs, grenades, tanks, and many more weapons at the disposal of the American military. These advancements have made it so that politics are even more about power and how many weapons a nation possesses. This is because when only certain countries have access to advanced weaponry, inter-country politics become more about pleasing the countries with the weapons, regardless of the population or size. The United States has a massive military and therefore inter-country politics is often centered around pleasing Americans. This has happened in the past and in the present, and can be proven with the Monroe Doctrine. The Monroe Doctrine was a political doctrine issued in 1823 that addressed European countries. It stated if a European country settled in land located in the western hemisphere, America would declare war. No country, European or other, settled in that land, for none of them wanted to start a brutal war between themselves and America. The reason being America had and still has today, a superb military. This political approach has kept American citizens safer, however technology has also let America take advantage of other
A married woman had less rights than a single woman. If married, a woman couldn’t do anything without her husband, such as take out a loan, or start
The man of the household had always been the one in command of the family, and women had no choice but to obey their husband. “By the law of every state in this Union to-day, North as well as South, the married woman has no right to the custody and control of her person. The wife belongs to her husband; and if she refuses obedience to his will, he may use moderate correction” (Anthony par. 47). Women were expected to follow their husband and obey his command.
America is the land of the free, home of the brave. As an American I learned those words as soon as I started elementary school. America is the greatest country on earth… or is it? America has a history of oppressing people because of race, occupation, and heritage. Yet as a people we like to say that, that is in the past and now we are inclusive as ever and everyone is considered equal.
The Monroe Doctrine was a speech given in 1823 by James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States, to the U.S. Congress concerning European presence in the Western Hemisphere. Monroe was becoming continuously concerned about European influence in the region. While the primary audience for this message was Congress, the intended audience was all European powers, including Russia, and Latin America. The events in Latin America before and after the Spanish-American War will be used as an example of the imperial reach by the U.S. The United States, ironically, became an imperial power through its mission outlined in the Monroe Doctrine to end European colonialism and imperialism.
Due to the fact that now America has treaties with some countries; an example of a well known treaty is NATO. NATO or, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a treaty for the counties that lie in the North Atlantic region. If one of the following countries were to fall under attack by another force, the countries involve themselves and defend said country under attack (A political and military alliance). But if one were to look closely, they can evidently see that some of the countries on the last were not always at peace.
This is when the United States becomes much like it is now. People were more into fashion, into different music like Jazz. Education is starting to change from religion to science. Kids indulge in random fads and trends. It is even the start of movies and sports.
Over the course of American History, there has always been a large demographic change within the states. Weather is be movements within the American people or immigration from other countries, there is always a change. But with these changes there are always consequences because of the causes. One event in recent history where this could be demonstrated is the population movements between 1945 to 1985 it went from change in Suburbanization, to the Sun Belt, and Immigration from Latin and Asian countries. To begin with, throughout the years of 1945 and 1985 there has been a large change within the demographics in suburbanization.
Adding on to other limitations, women almost had no freedom in their marriage. Before the women’s rights movement, when a woman is married the “husband and wife are one person” but “that person is the husband” (Doc 7). Once a woman is married, her rights and property were governed by the husband. Married women could not make wills or dispose of any property without their husband’s consent to do so.
A married woman was a dependent, like an underage child or a slave, and could not own property in her own name, she could not sue or sign contracts on her own. As the years passed, in 1980, this ideal of women evolved a bit, married women stayed the same but single women started getting jobs, but people viewed single women with pity and scorn. Women with minimal skills took jobs in factories. Women with some level of education found jobs as nurses or teachers and some office jobs were available to women who showed proper manners and
American expansionism would not only improve the country’s international reputation but would declare the United States sovereignty. The United States at this time was nothing but a mere blip on the radar of the World Powers and lacked the military competence to pose a threat. The Monroe Doctrine was a revealing of the United States strategy for preventing European intervention in the Western Hemisphere in three
James Monroe wrote the Monroe Doctrine proclamation in 1823. He was concerned about the possibilities of European colonial expansion. He stated that any European efforts to colonize land in North or South America would be deemed as an unfriendly act towards the United States. In the proclamation he also warned that if European powers did try to colonize any land from the Americas the Unites States would have the right to fully intervene in their colonizations for their own defense. Monroe also noted in the doctrine that the Unites States would not interfere in any internal affairs between European powers and stay neutral.
Women still did not have the same opportunities as men, but they were granted some freedoms. Women were expected to be accomplished, as Jane Austen describes in Pride and Prejudice, 1813, “A woman must have a thorough knowledge of music, singing, drawing, dancing, and the modern languages.” If a woman did not marry, she would live with her parents and try to make some money to
On the issue of whether culture in America is one culture or instead cultures, I believe that due to the vast variety and distinctness of the cultural groups that make up the United States the name should be American Cultures. To further examine why we will look at sources from several different figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Harriet Jacobs, Jackson Turner, John D’Emilio, Gerda Lerner, and Fredric Douglas. To start, we will first look at Harriet Jacobs and her biography detailing her life as a slave. Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery, however was unaware of this until the loss of her protection, her father who was a skilled slave, she is shocked by the realization saying “I never dreamed I was a piece of merchandise”(Jacobs, 8)
Undoubtedly, a great amount has changed since the Victorian Era. Technology, fashion, and transportation all have changed in obvious and notable ways. One thing that is harder to define and take note of, however, is how people have changed. Societally, how have they changed? Women in the Victorian Era were diminished and degraded to the point of property, which is a difference from many places across the globe in modern day.
Society expected women to be married, which affected the possible paths a woman could take in her life. The opportunities and freedoms of married women were different than those of a woman who was single. A single woman could own property and work, as opposed to a married woman whose property belonged to her husband and whose job was to take care of the household (Coursepack, 72). However, the jobs and professions available to women were not exactly desirable and also did not provide enough income to support oneself. An unmarried woman may have the freedom to choose her job, but the available opportunities paid less and were of lower status than the jobs available to men.
