Coming into an introduction to politics class, I thought to myself I knew exactly where my political views were on the scale. As the first two weeks of class went on, there was a constant questioning if my political views were still the same. The only way to find this out was by taking a quiz online at politicalcompass.org. After taking this quiz, it would hopefully give the results I had been hoping for. After the quiz was taken, there was a feeling of uncertainty because some of the questions did not make one hundred percent sense. The results came and on the picture it should my political view in the lower left corner in the libertarian left section. Looking at the number in the economic standpoint I was a -6.5 and the social I was -4.31. According to the results in both the economic and social spectrums, my mindset is in a classical libertarian. There would be an understanding of what the country wants for both sides and try to find a happy median to make both happy. In every government there is something that they would lack and I believe this government would lack being hard on the people living in the country. Therefore people would try to break laws and it would mean someone would have to step forward, which would be difficult. This quiz showed exactly what I thought my political views would be. Taking this quiz made me wonder on how much influence do outside factors have on the way we see the political side of our lives. Hopefully in the next few weeks, I will get a better understanding on how I see issues and how others see issues. Comparing and contrasting the two sides of authoritarian and libertarian would be beneficial so then I personally could see how other people in the class compare to one another. At the end of this, it reassured the way I thought of my political views were at the first day of
The social group we are in is determined from a young age and is based upon values we learned within the home. Although we are not born a Democrat or Republican, ideological values lean us toward a political party. In class, we discussed that period forces can also have an effect on young people, but not enough to have them change party lines. The identity we developed is derived from our social groups, since certain religions, racial groups, education level, and even our economic class is associated with different political parties. Poorer people and racial minorities tend to vote Democrat, and college non-educated whites are increasingly become more GOP (lecture).
He also points out differences between liberal and more conservative parties. Through these topics, he informs the reader of his opinions regarding problems in American politics; the equality of people governed and the divide amongst political parties. To begin his discussion, Berry describes how everyone has to pick a side in politics. He discusses the lack of understanding of what it really means to be in a particular party by saying, “It doesn’t matter that neither of these labels signifies much in the way of intellectual
By not allowing students to develop their own ideas and receive the education they need and deserve, the entire society will suffer from an undereducated population. Anne Neal ’s thesis can be applied to any courses taken at Brazosport College, or any college. If our government class was not allowed to learn about all the controversial subjects that government entails, we would all most likely leave the class knowing no more than when we began.
Several factors are given throughout the earlier chapters of the book to explain why the myth about polarization persists such as conflating political activists with the public and the media. Morris Fiorina also notes that most of the public is not proficient in political issues nor do they take the time to learn
By restraining the influence of the government on daily life, the United States will be able to return to the great nation of freedom; a nation in which its founding fathers so vehemently fought to build. Similarly, politics should not be controlled strictly according to political parties, and Coolidge urged people to support the values they believe in, not a certain political party. In today’s world, I think many politicians would benefit from acting in the way of doing the right thing, rather than supporting sides merely based on political affiliation. For this reason, I am passionate about educating myself as much as possible to candidates beliefs, and I look forward to being able to take part in my first elections in coming
Prior to taking POLS 1101, I had already obtained much knowledge about America under British rule, and the struggle that led us to become the independent country we are today. What I did not know is our current government structure and the processes and systems of our government. I also learned more about the Electoral College, the United States Supreme Court, the Nuclear Deal, and Britain’s “question time.” I enjoyed participating in these discussions, because each post required research, exploration, and consideration before meaningful dialogue; it requires students to analyze textbooks, the media, and much more, leading to one gaining a well rounded knowledge on a subject. I have also enjoyed the opportunity to read what my peers had to say on the exact same question, comparing and contrasting our answers and opinions.
Society began to change as the ideas of classical liberalism took hold. Social classes began to die away while a class structure based on wealth began to emerge. Classical liberalism valued the individual as unique and encouraged more economic opportunities. It valued private property and economic freedom. Under classical liberalism, people had greater opportunities to become wealthy and join a higher economic
The main part is the type of government, which is either democratic or authoritarian. In democratic governments people usually vote to make decisions and authoritarian someone makes the decision for the people. In Canada we have a representative democracy as in we do not vote directly for our leader but we vote for people who represent us in the House of Commons. Learning how your government operates is as important as what rights and the responsibilities
Speaker: I have found topics regarding the American voter incredibly interesting in my current research. I have also spent a significant time studying the work of my academic peers. There have been plenty of debates about the ability of the American voter to think rationally. I am not sure what people mean, exactly, by rational. However, if I were giving out grades on the basis of the ability of an American voter to formulate reasonably well-thought opinions grounded in substantive knowledge, I’d be handing out a lot of failing grades.
The overarching theme explored within this essay is the tendency of working-class conservatism within society. This has been analyzed above in regards to class-consciousness and hegemony. The popular Marxist explanation of working class Toryism sees a manifestation of false-consciousness on part of a large majority of the working class- a condition which is felt to be redeemable under the right conditions of proletariat education. In addition to this, some scholars have suggested that hegemonic pressures play a role in influencing the class consciousness of certain sects of persons within society. Political allegiances are to a large extent, a reflection of the vales persons within a society subscribe to in areas of their life outside the realm of politics.
At the start of America as we know it today, George Washington, our nation’s first president shared his opinion on the formation of political parties and how he believe they would tear up the nation and do more harm than good. Against Washington’s wishes two political parties came to rise; the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists, would be later known as Democrats and Republicans. Although these two parties agree on topics such as good schools, healthy families, safe streets and a sound economy, there are details in which the two parties do not see eye to eye. Republicans are commonly characterized as right-leaning and conservative. Direction leaning refers to how conservative or liberal a party is.
Unit 3 Reflection 1) We spent a long time this unit looking at political ideologies. Lots of things shape your moral/ethical compass and who you will be as adults. After this unit where you do place yourself on the political ideological spectrum? Do you think you will always feel this way?
I believe social classes have defined our society in many ways. In America, they separate people into three different classes: the upper class, middle class, and the lower or working class. Based on wealth and various occupations, social classes determine the population’s status in society. Social classes today define individuals and influence their actions. Although people born in a certain class may choose to stay there, they also have the choice of leaving.
Put all these together and they tell the story of political ideology. [1]
According to the Dictionary, Sociology is defined as the study of the development, structure, and functioning of human society. This means that people are willing to study social problems throughout the world and the society that they live in. In my life, I deal with my social class, Gender, Race, Religion, and the time I was born. Because of who I am, I definitely have been a part of a different upbringing and lifestyle that many sociologist may find interesting.
