Introduction This proposed research study will aim to examine the potential tensions between political correctness and freedom of speech in the college classroom. Political correctness, as defined by Merriam-Webster Online, is “conforming to a belief that language and practices which could offend political sensibilities (as in matters of sex or race) should be eliminated.” (Politically Correct, n.d.). The question that this proposed research will address is , “in what ways do JMU students perceive political correctness influencing conversation in the classroom?” This research proposal will begin with and introduction and a justification for the proposed study. Next, the proposal will provide a literature review. Finally the proposal will end …show more content…
According Bailey and Burgoon, political correctness is an area that, until recently, had yet to have a consensual definition among communications researchers (Bailey & Burgoon, 1992). Bailey and Burgoon state that political correctness is a way of exhibiting competent communication (Bailey & Burgoon, 1992). Andrews writes that political correctness is the practice of using sensitive language in the public and social contexts, especially in naming, in order to prevent offensive language (Andrews, 1996). According to Feldstein, political correctness was originally brought upon by the suppression of women and minorities, and political correctness now serves to correct offensive language so that the United States can function as a more holistic society (Feldstein, 1997). Ayim (1998) explicitly states that the realm of political correctness encompasses areas including: “policies governing fair language practices, affirmative action in hiring practices, legislation dealing with sexual and racial harassment, and greater inclusion of women and people of Colour in the curriculum” (p. 446). Ayim, however, believes …show more content…
The literature review examined the main sections of: political correctness, freedom of speech in the classroom, and diversity in the classroom. These sections review not only the conclusions of the literature, but also examined how the studies were performed. This specific field relating to political correctness is one that, in comparison to others, is still one that remains to be relatively untouched. The research question that this paper proposes will serve as an extension of previous research that has been done in this
In the story “Should This Student Have Been Expelled?” by Nat Hentoff was a very good argumentative passage. Hentoff argues that freedom of speech should be valued no matter how offensive it is interpreted by others. Dough Hann abused his freedom of speech when he blurted out “Fuck you niggers” to black students at Brown University. A student asked Hann to stop screaming and Hann yelled “What are you a faggot?” Next, Hann noticed an Israeli flag in the student’s dorm and asked “What are you a Jew?” and shouted, “Fucking Jew!”
The AAUP report describes some of the subjects that such policies consider to be “triggering”: “Oberlin College’s original policy [. . . ] is an example of the range of possible trigger topics: ‘racism, classism, sexism, heterosexism, cissexism, ableism, and other issues of privilege and
Though Mr. McNally also teaches us something we must not do when addressing differences. In a hypocritical event, Mr. McNally encouraged our enforcement of heterosexual masculinity when he pretended to hit on a student who was dressed in a way that wasn’t considered heterosexually masculine. When the joke was put into question, he jokingly defended himself stating that “it was on everyone else’s mind.” This shows us that as teacher, in order to teach our students to be tolerant, we must hold ourselves as teachers to a higher standard. We need to make sure that we do not promote intolerance even if it is in a small offhand.
In the article “American Jerks,” author Todd Schwartz wants readers to believe that the society we live in is not yet civilized. People are afraid to speak to one another because they don’t want to hurt each other’s feelings. We summed up terms and names to suit everyone 's needs and convictions and called it politically right. I truly agree with the points Schwartz made because the increase of technology has caused the American people to forget how to communicate and everyone is egotistical. To begin with, the expansion of innovation has brought about the American individuals to overlook how to impart.
Correct or Incorrect? Reflecting on Political Correctness Political correctness is a hotly debated topic in today’s world; everyone, linguist and mechanic alike, seems to have an opinion. In a chapter of his book When Will Jesus Bring the Pork Chops?, author George Carlin addresses this phenomenon and places himself in opposition to the idea of being ‘politically correct’. Although Carlin succeeds in creating a humorous and engaging piece, I personally believe his argument to be unconvincing as it is supported by his misunderstanding of the goal of political correctness, and also the nature of language.
Some more Special Pleading is presented when she claims that her “buzzwords” “…someone speaking out against lazy, offensive language, that doesn’t usually get challenged” (1:38) you could essentially extend this to analously apply to […someone speaking out against lazy, insulting language, that doesn’t usually get challenged…] for people “calling out” people for being “too PC”. Why does her choice of language get a pass while the language she is criticizing doesn’t, this is simply bias in favor of her language choice. Another fallacy that non sequitur, “In fact, political correctness is expanding free speech. We’re adding words to the dictionary to the dictionary every year in an effort to promote more inclusive and respectful speech”(2:57), more words does not mean more free speech, if this was the case, people who knew multiple languages would have extreme amounts of free speech, but this is not the case, free speech is saying what you want, and if someone is making words for you to say, it’s not your speech it’s theirs.
Though there are some exceptions, the young generation at large today has been brainwashed by politically correct culture. That culture shuns complex thought, and makes any dissent from the PC mainstream punishable by shunning, yelling, and attempts to silence. It runs rampant on college campuses, and Hofstra is no exception. Trigger warnings are unfortunately a major aspect of this culture, and there is little remedy other than to save the minds of those we can still sway. As best summarized by the American Association of University Professors, “The presumption that students need to be protected rather than challenged in a classroom is at once infantilizing and anti-intellectual”
Administrator and teachers view their role as exclusively teaching the students about academics and feel that speaking up about racial tension as “political” and they would rather stay calm and avoid controversial topics (Hardie, 2013). The school understands there’s racial tension, but they rather stay out of the situation to protect their selves and their character. Sweeping racial problems under the rug prolongs racism. The earlier the problem of racism’s identified and addressed, the quicker racism will reside.
Free Speech on College Campuses Free speech is a freedom granted under several constitutions in the world, including the American constitution. The idea of free speech is one that is placed in the law to avoid situations where the ruling government or institution is not able to curtail the freedom of those being ruled. The idea is one that serves to whistle blow on any wrong that may be done by a government or an institution. This idea of free speech extends to universities and colleges, bringing into perspective the idea of free speech onto our campuses. Moreover, I will be discussing different aspects of free speech among campus students depending on the views of different people.

George Washington once said “If the freedom of speech is taken away then the dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to slaughter ("Sherwin" par. 2). ” Political correctness is having a negative effect on people today. It limits free speech and is deleting the history of our country. It also is making young adults weaker, and it gives rights to some people while taking rights away from other people. Political correctness is negatively affecting our society.

By shutting down the ideas of black students, white students end healthy collaboration between races and suggests that the ideas of colored students are not as valid as the ideas of white students. As a result, euphemisms raise the egos of white leaders by lowering the egos of colored subjects, thereby discouraging racial
CHAPTER 3 DESIGN AND PROCEDURE This chapter provides a structural plan and strategy of inquiry to attain answers to research questions and problems. It discussed about the complete program of the research that includes the outline of what the researchers will do so that they can answer the questions validly, accurately and objectively.
