Academic Reasons Why Thai People Has Poor English Skills
English is more and more crucial than in the past since the world has become globalized. People in almost countries use English for international communication. Nevertheless, Thailand is one of the most well-known countries that people suffer from communication problems with other countries in the ASEAN Economic Community. According to the EF English Proficiency Index 2015, Thailand has a poor standard in speaking English that is ranked at 14th from 16 countries and 62nd from 70 countries around the world (Fredrickson, 2016). Consequently, governments try to provide English to be a mandatory subject to their citizens in order to handle the language education in many fields such as education,

Ancient people give priority to their own languages rather than others. The fact from “Thailand is the only country” (2013) reveals that Thai people in the past used only Thai language because Thailand is the only one country in Southeast Asia that was never colonized by foreign countries as same as other regions. For example, Malaysia, Singapore, and the Philippines were colonized by European countries in the past (Citrinot, 2010). These countries did not only end up losing their independence but also enforce to use English as a primary language because in the past, if strong countries want to be above some countries completely, they will occupy the country and the culture; as a result, these colonized countries have to speak English as official language inevitably. This illustrates that colonized countries obtain numerous advantages to communicate and negotiate internationally, while dependent countries such as Thailand might face difficulties in these …show more content…
The classroom is one of the most influent places that obstruct student’s mind. Psychological factors, such as the fear of making mistakes, shyness, anxiety, lack of confidence and lack of motivation, are significant problems that make students feel uncertain from speaking English (Juhana, 2012). It is undeniable that the style of most Thai schools is familiar with grade students rather than give a feedback. To demonstrate, teachers always give some comments in terms of grade on their student’s assignment in the class, but they do not usually explain to students about their mistakes. As a result, students might not understand their weakness and be fear to use it again. Besides, many students may obtain some psychological impacts from a study in classes. Learning with Thai teachers makes students do not have opportunities to practice speaking English with native teachers. Therefore, when Thais confront situations that enforce them to speak English, they might worry about other people to look down on their pronunciation and fear to speak foreign languages with people in the
The film Smoke Signals describes a journey that two Coeur d’ Alene Indians, Victor and Thomas, were going to Phoenix to take the remains of Victor’s father. During journey, Victor’s attitude toward his father was changing from complaint to finally forgiveness. There was heavy Indian culture color using in this film, from the lines spoke n by Indian characters to the scene of Indian’s daily life (such as fly bread and powwow). This implies that after independence, Indians were more aspire to be solidary and to be admitted by other communities. Connecting to what we learned of sociolinguistics so far, colonialism had a dominant influence to Indian culture, especially in language area.
Imperialists became paranoid that because they could not understand what the people were saying, that they must be conspiring against them. Instead of learning these languages for themselves, legal bans were enforced with physical punishment
Currently, English is the most widely used language in the world. Many high school students think that they don’t necessarily need

Language is used to convey a message as well as connect people to a particular culture or ethnicity he or she identifies with. People who share the same language share a bond and pass their history through language. In chapter one of The Skin That We Speak: Thoughts on Language and Culture in the Classroom Joanne Kilgour Dowdy speak about growing up in Trinidad and her mother insisting on her speaking in the colonizer's language rather than her native Trinidadian language. Joanne Kilgour Dowdy felt as if her identity was being pushed to the side when she was forced to speak “Colonized English” when she was at school or around the social elite of her community, and felt ridiculed from her peers for speaking proper as if she was white or of the elite social class. Dowdy major concern was how to have the freedom to go back and forth from home, language to the public language without feeling judged from both sides of her
The teacher’s approach to teaching is: The harder she pushes the students the harder they will work and the more they will learn. Some people might argue that this is not the proper way to learn. Many people would surely prefer a safe environment where it is okay to make a mistake and discuss issues in a language they are far more comfortable to speak. As a result of the teacher being so mean the students are frightened to speak. Though through hard times most people will often feel like it helps that you are not the only one struggling, something that the refugees most defi-nitely must be feeling when they arrive at a new country and has to learn a new language.
study in the United States can lead to negative emotions, academic difficulties, and higher levels of cultural stress. This is because language proficiency plays a critical role in transmission of information and regulation of cognitive processes. The language barrier can also lead to lack of confidence and poor social integration. Some of them may avoid communicating because of the fear of making mistakes. This contributes to the feeling of loneliness and homesickness because the students feel that they have no family to rely on.
Since parents tend to have limited English language skills, the communication between school and parent is limited. (Huffcut 34). Hmong parents who do not speak English insist that their children communicate in their native language and keep up Hmong traditions (Vang, F. 4). First generation Hmong American college students do not perform as well as other students because of language barrier too. Students whose parents are illiterate in English or their primary language are more likely to be underachievers in school (Vang, C. 10).
This was because they wanted to have their native language be the language of the country. Between the competition, fighting, and killing, all of these factors contributed to start the
The United States is a place of freedom. We are a mixing pot that unifies as one. Many religions, cultures, and languages make their home in the Unites States. Many foreigners see the U.S. as an opportunity to seek better lives and education, but when it comes to foreigners and native-born non-English speakers that do not yet know English, it becomes a little more difficult to go about an average day let alone make a better future. Children in school often become English Language Learners, or ELL, to assimilate to the American standards.
Often when one is prompted to think of an empire, the Roman Empire comes to mind. The Romans started from a small piece of land along the Tiber River in central Italy, and within a millenia amassed an unprecedented territory comprising of parts of all 3 known continents of the ‘old world’ and dozens of countries, peoples, cultures, and languages. This massive empire certainly had a large impact on its peoples during its power; however, even today one may find the massive impact of the Roman empire in various languages, governments, and religions all over the globe. Language is one of the most important aspects of a culture. Language dictates how and what people literally and figuratively speak to one another.
The teacher has tried to use English as much as possible with her students. She used English when she explained the material and gave an instruction for the students, for example when she asked to the student to ‘listen and repeat after her’, ‘open page 49’, ‘submit your homework’ something like that. In my opinion, it is good enough because indirectly she invites the students to use English. But, sometimes I saw some students who didn’t understand the meaning of the teacher’s instruction, as the result they asked to the other
