China, a country which is regarded as one of the rising great powers in the world, not only has long history in economic and military development, but also in cultural evolution. Popular culture, which also plays a crucial role in evolution of culture, is the mainstream ideology known and recognized by the public. The dissemination of popular culture involves the diverse media, such as through the mass media and the outstanding notables (Latham, 2007). Martial arts, the quintessence of modern Chinese culture adhering to harmony and health, has been demonstrating its regimen significance to both nationals and foreigners. It is also one of the media to propagate Chinese popular culture as the learners need to understand the philosophies and the implications behind. Sporting status and capability of China seems will continue growing in future; more people may learn martial arts for the sake of their interests towards Chinese culture or their health, but the connotations of “China popular culture” brought by sports and martial arts earn us further reviews on its enlightenment in contemporary society. According to Latham (2007), sports and martial arts express their clout through people’s involvement in real practice and the transmission by the mass media. People participate in various kinds of sports to stay health or for entertaining purposes. In China, many Chinese had started practising martial arts when they were young. They think that martial arts is not only a wholesome practice, but also the pragmatic defensive mechanics. Lorge (2012) states that a soaring number of foreigners are interested in learning specific kinds of martial arts, such as taijiquan and shaolinquan for health care purposes. Nevertheless, there is also a more popular way to let people take part in sports and martial arts, which is mediated spectatorship. It means people receive sporting information from the mass media. If the Chinese athletes had become medallists in some international sporting contests, the nationals would be heartened by that, thinking that China has already been capable in scouting for and fostering talents as sporting results are also one of the indexes to measure the soft power of a country. 2008 Summer Olympics had brought the world’s attention towards how China prepared such a remarkable event.
