Overpopulation occurs when a population of a species exceeds the carrying capacity of its ecological means. Overpopulation is a function of the number of individuals compared to the relevant resources, such as the water and vital nutrients they need to survive. It can result from an increase in births, a decline in humanity rates, an increase in immigration, or an unsustainable biome and depletion of resources. We need to require a new ethic of environmental citizenship on the part of individuals, businesses and governments. There need to be a clear meaning of the consequences, tradeoffs, and opportunities with the action that influence the trajectory of our planet. Are we indulging too much in our resources or just simply wasting them? Everything that we do has a repercussion if not managed correctly. We need to be more responsible of the usage and protection of the environment through conservation and sustainable practices in sustain and enhance Earth’s life-support systems. This in turn requires effective communication of issues, opportunities and improved alignment of incentives with those public customs that foster sustainable human behavior. There are laws to protect the environment, which is a positive gesture. However, everyone does not follow that law. Doing nothing and allowing overpopulation and overconsumption to take over will mount to billions of humans suffering and the future generations will be affective by the end results. Reducing birth rates now will possibly prevent the increase in death rates.
