(i) Air Quality
Ports are generally situated within or in close proximity to densely populated urban areas that are frequently critically affected by air pollution. In addition, being major nodes linking and bringing together international transport chains and related economic activities, port areas are often part of critical geographical areas when it comes to air quality considerations. Although port-related emissions contribute only for a part to air quality problems in port and surrounding areas, these problems can affect negatively the image of ports and their surrounding residential zones and put serious pressure on port development ambitions. Inadequate Pilotage Services
Pilotage is an essential service at ports as it ensures the safety berthing of vessels. Without pilot vessels at ports guiding vessels to berth, the vessels run the risk of grounding and colliding. The provision of such service is essential to ports which harbour ambition to enhance their competitiveness and attract larger vessels as such vessels face big risk of manoeuvring through the narrow channels. This is especially the case with secondary ports in Peninsular Malaysia which generally tend to have narrow waterways leading to their ports.
Take the case of Tanjung Langsat Port which is under the purview of Johor Port Authority (JPA). Pilotage service is compulsory at the port and the service is provided by Johor Port Authority. However, the management of Tanjung Langsat Port said that the speed with which pilotage service is provided leaves much to be desired. The management lamented that its efficiency and effectiveness are hindered due to the lack of tug boats to help steer ships into the port. The port’s management believes that vessel turnaround time can be significantly reduced if it is allowed to have its own pilotage services instead of depending on the port authority. Not all secondary ports depend on their port authorities for the provision of pilotage service. However, allowing secondary port operators running their own pilotage services instead of port instead of port authorities is not without its disadvantages. These include the high cost and capital outlay and low utilization of resources. (MIMA,

The naval stores policy had affected the mercantile views in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, and mercantilists’ views about the Northern Colonies had varied drastically for four decades, from 1690 to 1730, although almost all of mercantilists agreed with the importance of the economic unity in the empire. Child and Cary criticised severely the Northern Colonies as useless and harmful for the mother country in the early 1690s, when the naval stores policy was still negligible, whereas mercantilists in the early eighteenth century, such as Gee, and Defoe, argued the contribution of these colonies to the economic circulation in the British Atlantic world. In their views, in addition to the possibilities of the Northern Colonies

Before the Portuguese got into the Indian ocean to begin maritime trade there was mainly land-based trading going on with the nations/countries around them and some maritime trade. As the countries began to trade more and more they all soon had the products that each country around them had to offer. That’s when the Portuguese decided to try and transform maritime trade. The Portuguese wanted the three g’s every country dreams of: God, Glory, and Gold. Although many Scholars would argue that the Portuguese transformed maritime trade, they did not due to how power hungry they got and waging war with the nations and the effects left on the countries.
United States operations in the Pacific region during the war conflict with the Empire of Japan was comprised of a resourceful employment of sea, air, and land assets and a set of strategic doctrines that in the end resulted on the defeat and surrender of the Japanese forces and United States victory. Sea power and its attainment from a United States perspective played a critical and vital role in the Pacific conflict. It can be argued, based on a Mahanian perspective, that the rising of United States Forces victoriously in the war effort was the chief result of the maritime superiority and a considerable command presence at sea. Nonetheless, after the Coral Sea and Midway engagements, a more Corbettian doctrine, specifically during the Central Pacific Campaigns, is exhibited mainly by the utilization of air, surface and subsurface assets and tactical employment of sea units in order to deny the Japanese attainment of command at sea.

Importance of the Battle of the Atlantic The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle of World War Two. Fought between the Allies, led by the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States, and the Axis, led by Nazi Germany, the battle would directly lead to the defeat of Nazi Germany. It was fought over millions of miles of ocean, between thousands of warships and millions of sailors, and the most crucial battle of the entire war. As Winston Churchill said in 1941, “Everything turns on the Battle of the Atlantic.”
The argument that the British could not realistically deploy more naval assets to America while simultaneously worrying about an attack on their homeland is understandable. Once the French and Americans signed an alliance treaty in 1778, it marked a significant milestone in history. “For the first time in the eighteenth century, Great Britain found itself diplomatically isolated; at one point in 1779 it was even threatened with French invasion.” Such isolation forced the British to make preparations to protect themselves from French threats. “The British government was therefore obliged to prepare for a much broader conflict unaided by European allies who might have compelled the French to commit resources to defending their position on the Continent.”

In order to determine the whether an outsourcing activities would have a positive or negative impact an evaluation of the activity should be undergone. This evaluation examines the required coordination, strategic control, and intellectual property characteristics of the activity (Chase & Jacobs, 2013, p.444). The required coordination aspect examines the difficulty to complete the activity with limited interaction due to geographical locations. Outsourcing an activity that would result in a large amount of back-and-forth exchange would not be wise to proceed (Chase & Jacobs, 2013, p.444).
