Focusing question: What are the impacts of single-parent family on children in China? According to the research, the divorce rate increase more and more quickly. So it causes more and more single-parent families. Then the children, who grow in this kind of family, have some different habits and characters with other children in intact family. Cohabitation is considered to be the cause of more and more single parent families, because cohabitation will cause pregnancy easily before their marriage, the probability of break up in cohabitant families is three times of the families that have been divorced. What would you do if all of a sudden the government said you could only have one child? This is exactly what policy happened in 1980 in China when the One Child Policy was enacted. There has been a lot of talk about if this policy was necessary and if it had a good or bad effect on China’s future. This policy was a good idea because it positively affected women and girls, reduced pollution, and parents are now able to give more care and attention to one child. China’s One Child Policy was a good idea because it helped women and girls.
According to a survey done on the internet of 7,000 Chinese only children, from ages 15-25, 58 percent felt lonely and described themselves as being selfish (Doc F). This policy had big impacts and interfered on the only child and it’s future. It’s understandable the population problems China had and why they did what they feel they had to do. This was something that was their fault from the beginning, so it was their problem to fix.

Studies have shown that children growing up in poverty-stricken single parent households are more likely to be affected well into adulthood. While this is the case, people are also living longer, and families are accommodating this change by living with relatives allowing for more bonding time then in previous generations.

I feel that this class has changed my whole perception of what family work is, the importance of not getting caught up in the content and focussing on the process of identifying strengths that the family has which can be used to perpetuate ongoing homeostasis. This course also highlighted for me how much more I still need to learn about supporting the family system. I have been working with families for about 10 years, mostly with supporting positive parenting and also with families who have children and youth experiencing mental health concerns. I feel that my process orientated interactions have been effective for my gathering of information but not necessarily helpful for the long-term healthy coping of the family. By watching you, listening to your teachings and participating and observing role plays I feel that these experiences have led to not only practical knowledge but a new perspective of the importance of stepping back and trying to walk in the client’s shoes.
