The functionalist perspective was created by Emile Durkheim to see society as inter-related or interconnected. The theoretical framework stresses the questions such as what functions does poverty play in maintaining or disrupting the social order in society. As a result having to acknowledge poverty as an economic problem in South Africa, this essay will look at the positive functions of poverty in relation with the functionalist perspective. Therefore poverty with it positive functions can contributes to a positive development in the economy of South Africa.

Since according to Ferrante semi-peripheral economy are characterised by “extreme inequality” (2013: 282), which means the poor serve the rich. Furthermore the poor people look for work that is low paying as possible where their working hours are long and inflexible. Such jobs that they occupy in society are babysitting, being a domestic worker, Gardner and the approximating but on the other hand jobs that are not legally recognised on the economy of South Africa such as prostitution, poor people- mostly girls are permanently jam-packed by sex jobs. Which means that education is the determinant of how much should a South African earn because of their skills, ability, knowledge in a job. Furthermore the people who are not able to read or write are being given opportunity to occupy dangerous occupations in an organization especially for those who manufacture products for the South African economy, where in deduction they pay low wages for poor people because this poverty function helps local firms to employ cheap labour on to the business world so that it will be easy for them to expand with light expanses or cost of labour. The subliminal connotation of this function is that the uneducated people have limited or imperfect alternative except to take unskilled, temporal, dead end
