Surgeries have become a routine process. Around fifteen million surgeries are performed a year. They put you under anesthesia, they operate, and you wake up with a little discomfort. I constantly stay ‘plugged into’ my recovery community in a variety of different ways. I know that it plays a huge part in my personal recovery in helping me stay clean and sober. A few of the ways I am able to stay connected are through hospitals and institutions, as well as picking up service commitments at my home group. I am a big advocate of H&I’s because they were a key component of my recovery when I was in treatment. I was tremendously inspired when I heard someone who was doing well in the outside world share their experience, strength, and hope.
I was wide awake and well aware of my surroundings. Throughout all three days, I wasn’t allowed to have any food. The first thing I had to eat after my surgery was ice chips-little pieces of ice. It was better than nothing, but it still wasn’t pizza. I was bombarded with hugs, kisses, candy, cards.
D. Recovery Therapy from Addiction: Some medical systems, including those of at least 15 states of the United States, refer to an Addiction Severity Index to assess the severity of problems related to substance use. The index assesses problems in six areas: medical, employment/support, alcohol and other drug use, legal, family/social, and psychiatric. Gawande demonstrates his point through several different stories involving patients who had gastric-bypass surgery. For example, when telling the story of a woman named Carla, Gawande states, “She had slowly found herself to have a profound and unfamiliar sense of willpower over food.” Gawande argues that as a result of this change, “she no longer wanted to eat like she did before. She thought that the surgery was why she no longer ate as much as she used to. Yet she felt as if she were choosing not to do it” (174).
In the United States, approximately 49% of veterans who saw combat have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Smith). PTSD is a condition in which an individual experiences a traumatic ordeal that causes a stimulation of the fight-or-flight response when no signs of harm or present. In health care, it is important for professionals to not only be aware of the symptoms of this disorder, but also be aware of what can be done to treat it and how this population is different from other individuals. After experiencing a traumatic event while deployed, symptoms of PTSD may not arise or be evident until months or years after returning from deployment.

The purpose of careers within the biomedical sciences has always been to help better the well-being of society. Whether it’s a pharmaceutical scientist creating medicine, a nurse attending to a patient 's needs, or a nutritionist developing a diet for a client, they all work towards a healthy, better society. Apart from other careers in this field, nutritionists in particular consistently work towards this goal, as they constantly attempt to counter obesity and diseases that plague society. Generally speaking, nutritionists assess a client’s nutritional and health needs. For example, nutritionists will evaluate a client and based off of their findings, they devise a custom meal plan for that client(Dieticians and Nutritionists).
