CHAPTER 1
The Problem and its Setting

Introduction
Kidneys are essential for the survival of human beings. Their life-sustaining job as cleansing machines is to remove the toxins and excess water from our blood. Being able to filter and clean two hundred (200) liters of blood every twenty-four (24) hours is enough to prove how important our kidneys are. Furthermore, kidneys also help in controlling our blood pressure, producing red blood cells, and keeping our bones healthy. Due to the kidneys’ several functions, if not taken good care, can be prone to kidney disease (Esposo, 2012).
Based on World Health Organization data last May 2014, kidney disease ranked as the country’s 7th leading cause of death in the Philippines (worldlifeexpectancy.com). The key factors of kidney disease …show more content…

They were the backbone of all life on Earth and an essential resource for all human beings. The plants produce oxygen, provide herbal medicines, and beautify the environment with their flowers, and yield fruits and vegetables. Some of these will not be achieved without the help of the bees.
In the Philippines, propolis is of great help not only for the bees themselves but also for human uses in medicine. With the advanced technologies that we have nowadays, researches made were more convenient and easier. Identifying, experimenting, and analyzing the therapeutic properties of propolis can lead to more discoveries of its usefulness to human life.
Propolis is a resin-like material produced by bees with their food such as pollen, bark, shoots of trees and flowers mixed with their salivary secretions and wax flakes. It is used to strengthen the structural integrity of the hive, reduce vibration inside the hive, and to make the hive more defensible by sealing alternate entrances. Propolis is sticky and at above room temperature (20°C/68°F), however, at lower temperature, it becomes hard and very brittle.
