The social issues occurring to children in modern society include poverty, child abuse and child labor.
Poverty affecting children is social issue that can be found anywhere in the world. To emphasize, the following quote is about poverty’s effect on children. “Research is clear that poverty is the single greatest threat to children’s well-being” (“Child Poverty,” n. d.). Poverty is described as being the single greatest threat to a child because it affects the children’s lives so greatly. For example, about 28 percent of children in developing countries live in poverty. “Around 27-28 percent of all children in developing countries are estimated to be underweight or stunted” (Shah, 2013). “ ‘Child abuse is not simply any harm that befalls children. Children throughout the world suffer from a multitude of harms- malnutrition, starvation, infectious disease, congenital defects, abandonment, economic exploitation, the violence of warfare, to name a few. Not all harm that befalls children is child abuse’ ” (“Module 4: Child Labor and Child Abuse in Developing Countries,” n. d.). Child labor is not just when a child is hurt because of his/her irresponsible caregiver. It can mean when a child is mistreated by physical abuse, utilization, emotional abuse, or neglect. For instance, a very common example of neglect can be when an adult fails to provide supervision for the child. This is called supervision neglect. Furthermore, child abuse has many lasting effects. “ ‘The abused children had all types of problems, from anxiety and depression to rule-breaking and aggression,’ lead study author David Vachon, of McGill University in Montreal, said by email” (Rapaport, 2015). Child abuse can cause many psychological issues like depression, anxiety and other problems. In addition, child abuse can occur to anyone. To demonstrate, the following quote is about the large number of children who work. “An estimated 246 million children are engaged in child labour” (“Factsheet: Child Labor,” n. d.). There are about 2.2 billion children on Earth, and an estimated 246 million children are engaged in child labor. As a result of the immense amount of children who are engaged in child labor, children are forced to work in harmful conditions. “In developing countries, children often work under hazardous conditions in the manufacturing and agricultural sectors. For these children, crushing accidents, amputations, and fractures account for 10% of all work-related injuries” (“Module 4: Child Labor and Child Abuse in Developing Countries,” n. d.). Children who live in developing countries work in bad conditions, where accidents are plentiful. “Child labor not only negatively affects a child’s health, but it also negatively impacts his/her ability to receive schooling and perform academically” (“Module 4: Child Labor and Child Abuse in Developing Countries,” n. d.). Not to mention, child labor affects the ability that children have to obtain education and to also perform well
