The problems of poverty are so pervaded that the United Nations has listed poverty eradication as one and the foremost of the objectives in the recent Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which was recognized by the world leaders at the World Summit on 25-27 September 2015. Adopted from the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the ultimate challenge and became an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.
It is not easy to define poverty, particularly in the development context. The difficulties of defining poverty has been addressed by Murdoch and Haley (2002). Different definition of poverty would require different approaches. One of the most

According to this indicator, number people who live under the poverty line are about 1.4 billion. The poverty estimates as revealed in the following table are not considering the recent global food crisis and increasing cost of energy, which are unlikely will add about 100 million more people into below poverty line. (Cf. Shah 2011)
The income measurement of poverty is being criticised as it was only based on income without considering inflation rate of the country, household members, type of diseases, access to schooling, etc. The absence of other measurements will not only simplifying poverty issues, but also difficult to envisage the correct policy and solution towards poverty alleviation. Thus, approaching poverty requires more comprehensive view. It involves, from economic to health services, from education to people’s culture. The World Bank had extended the conventional definition of poverty with income to a more comprehensive notion of lack of opportunities, capabilities, sense of voiceless-ness and vulnerability to external shocks.(World Development Report, 2000/2001). By considering that development is a multidisciplinary phenomenon, approaching poverty requires multidisciplinary views. The 1997 Human Development Report (HDR) introduced the

Poverty is affecting billions of people around our world and the number is growing with each day. Many people think they can avoid the effects of poverty, but it is something that affects all of our daily lives. Many people see poverty as a person who lacks money, although this is true poverty is caused by many more things than being without money. Just the fact that one in two children live in poverty can help people see clearly the impact it has on our world. Poverty truly does influence the type of care and treatment a person will receive when they need it.
The solutions therefore interpreted as a need for greater economic growth, with a focus on building human capacity/capital. Conceptualization of poverty has broadened to include non-economic components. Thus, poverty is increasingly being recognized as multi-dimensional, distinguishing the numerous aspects of people’s lives affected by poverty, including economic and non-economic dimensions, and recognizing that poverty occurs within and is affected by the political, economic, social and cultural context (Sen,
Poverty and deprivation of many kinds is a very serious problem, not only in the United States, but also around the world. In a study in 2014, forty-seven million people living in the U.S. were considered to be in poverty; that is fifteen percent of its population . Poverty and deprivation is a serious topic that everyone should be aware of; if you are not aware of a problem, how are you going to fix it? You can find examples of this topic in almost every where; From books and movies to your everyday life. The most common known definition of poverty is economic poverty, but there is also social, emotional, and spiritual poverty and deprivation.
Smith (2010) argues that while ‘poverty’ and ‘economic inequality’ are closely related terms, they refer to ‘distinct and different concepts’. The scope of this review precludes detailed definitions of poverty (e.g. as provided elsewhere, Goulden and D’Arcy, 2014), or debates about how poverty might best be measured. Instead, it offers a brief description of how these two concepts might be defined and how they differ. Poverty is a term that concentrates on those who have the least money or other resources or, as Ridge and Wright (2008) argue, it is ‘a situation of extreme disadvantage experienced at the bottom of the social and economic scale’. Yet poverty is more than being at the bottom of the income scale; it describes individuals and families who have inadequate resources to secure what is deemed a reasonable, or expected, standard of living within a given country.
Despite the great wealth the United States possesses, it has for long struggled with poverty which is said to be inherited from one generation to another. The culture of poverty hinders those affected from economic betterment however much assistance they obtain from social programs put in place. The term Culture of poverty is believed to have been coined by Oscar Lewis, who suggested that children who grow up in poverty-stricken families are highly likely to adopt the norms and practices that encourage poverty. Thus, these children, he believed, would replicate the adapted values in their lives which would in turn generate a cycle of intergenerational poverty in the long run (Bell et al, 2013). Thus the culture of poverty is a topic which creates heated debates in both the public and political arenas.
Poverty is one of the most horrific epidemics in our society today. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. It is a very serious problem that many people suffer from today. Many issues such as illness, hunger, and bad sanitation are all causes of poverty. Statistics show that there are over 35 million Americans that live in poverty.
The Effects of Growing up in Poverty Poverty is not a new phenomenon we are dealing with. It has been an issue from the foretime till now. Poverty gradually has continued and changed its form in a different manner that has created many problems for the new generations, for example, in the old days poverty implicated to lack land and food, but nowadays, poverty means lack of education, lack of food and water, lack of money and much more. The main cause of poverty is a lack of money or income which has created a very critical situation in local and international society. These critical situations are child labor, hunger, health problems and much more that we are dealing with nowadays.
The children of our nation are the future; however, America’s children are suffering. Child poverty, hunger and nutrition, and welfare are growing issues that need to be solved. The statistics provided in The State of America’s Children 2017 Report are eye-opening. Sadly, poverty is threatening America’s children. According to the State of America’s Children in the United States and Alabama 2017 Factsheets, 18 percent of the U.S.’s children were poor in 2016, and 25 percent of Alabama’s children were poor in 2016.

Poverty can adversely affect the population in so many ways. Families living in poverty can face emotional and social challenges, cognitive lacks and health and safety issues and acute and chronic stresses. Levels of stress increase with the economic circumstances. Subsequent poverty and job loss are associated with violence in families, including child and elder abuse. These families are also more likely to be exposed to illnesses, job loss, eviction, criminal victimization and family death.
Poverty is not only just in the U.S. its all over world. Poverty is lacking as such needs as cash, meals, water, clothing, or a home/saf place to stay. Accoding to The American economist Mollie Orshansky (1915–2006) poverty was known as the deprivation of "those goods and services and pleasures which others around us take for granted. " Poverty is a global problem, but there is much debate regarding how to define poverty and how to remedy
Inefficient policies all around the world and especially in our country are contributing to problems in the society. And the biggest problem which the world faces today is the problem of “Poverty” and “Inequality”. It is hard for one to determine whether poverty causes inequality or is it the other way around because both these problems are interrelated. Poverty is something which is caused due to transferring wealth in to the hands of a specific group and the unjust policies of the government. And inequality is discriminating a person in all spheres of life which gives a rise to sense of deprivation.
Poverty is defined as the state of being unable to fulfill basic needs of human beings. Poverty is the lack of resources leading to physical deprivation. Poor people are unable to fulfill basic survival needs such as food, clothing, shelter. These are the needs of lowest order and assume top priority. Poor people are unknown of their lack of voice, power, and rights, which leads them to exploitation.
Poverty still occurs across the modern world which we live in nowadays. While the majority of people would relate the word poverty with less developed countries the truth is that poverty is to be found everywhere you look. Yet the term, poverty, is brought up to discussion. Because would you consider yourself poor even though you didn’t know the better scenario existed? And isn’t it sometimes enough just to have a bed to sleep in, food to eat and people around who love you?
