Around the world, poverty seems to be a common problem for almost every nation. In some cases, there are countries who have the majority of the population in the considered poverty level, while other countries have a very small or no portion of poverty in their country. For example, third world countries struggle tremendously off of basic necessities like food and sometimes shelter. Compared to the United States, a first world country which is one of many others around the world, still struggles with homelessness, and people who live with either little income or none at all. The question is if a first world country such as the United States still has people who struggle in its nation due to income, why hasn't there been anything done, knowing …show more content…
To fix this issue, companies should look to hire more people who are jobless or of low income because it helps stimulate the socioeconomic paradigm in reducing levels of poverty, decreasing amounts of health risks, and strengthening the nation's overall democracy. Reducing the poverty levels in the U.S. will benefit the overall well being of the country’s economy. It's essential to have a good economy because that leads to the growth and production of a nation. Currently the U.S. has a steady economy, “The initial reading on third quarter growth was 3.0%. That marks the best growth since 2014 when the economy grew 5.2%” (Gillespie). Poverty issues in the United States can cause complications later on in the future for the nation and its upcoming generation of children. When a child is in a household of low income, or at the poverty line it affects the development of their brain, “ Researchers scanned the brains of more than 1000 children aged three to 20 years old, taking genetic factors into account, finding out that children’s cerebral cortex tended to expand as family income rose.” (sample). The saying for Texas is “everything is bigger in Texas”. Most Americans see Texas as a thriving state with large areas of land, big homes, and big incomes. This reality may be true for some Texans, but not the majority. Texas actually leads in the rankings for poverty. “As of January 22, 2015, Politifact Texas listed on their website that Texas has increased in the poverty rates from 15.1 percent to 17.5 percent.”
World War II led to a significant decrease in poverty in America after the Great Depression. After World War II, the unemployment rate dropped from 14.6 percent to 1.2 percent (Higgs, 1992). This was because, during the war, 17 million new jobs were created for civilians. During the war, corporate profits doubled and industrial productivity increased to 96 percent. The increase in productivity caused more goods to be produced for consumers.
There are people who work 40 hours a week and are still in poverty; this is a highly prominent issue. The uneven distribution of wealth, known as wealth inequality, is a problem that plagues not only America but also the world. With wealth inequality, there are two main issues and one solution to those issues. The problems are that the wealth in America is unevenly distributed and there people in America who work 40 hours a week and still have very little money. Wealth inequality is the root of all problems faced in America.
“It is estimated to get back to pre-recession levels of poverty, we would have to create almost 5.6 million jobs”. As stated by Rebecca Vallas, reporter for the Center of American Progress’s website, “The best way out of poverty is a well-paying job”. A risky, but possible move could be to raise the minimum wage income level in North Carolina a fair bit. The reason this is a risky move is because if we raise the minimum wage level too high, then that might further inflate the economy, which would hurt
I. Rank R., Mark.2011. “Rethinking American Poverty.” Context 10(2):16-21. II. Misconceptions the public has about poverty mostly who is responsible for preventing it.
Today, as we find ourselves in the twenty first century, our problem with poverty still exists and appears to be getting worse. Cities are continuing to grow to max capacities, hunger rings clear throughout the world, natural resources are depleted everyday due to over use, causing a degradation of our environment and billions of individuals do not claim Yahweh as their God. These are the occurrences on this planet on an everyday day cycle. There appears to be more focus on selfishness and the everyday rather than living in community with others. Plain and simple, poverty is serious and we must get to the root of it.
Given there is enough food in the world to feed every person it's heartbreaking to see major cities struggling to feed their citizens. There is an overwhelming amount of people who are considered hungry and malnourished. This problem goes above and beyond just major cities. Many countries deal with hunger but America is the main focus. Hunger and malnutrition in large cities are major problems, however, many organizations are helping to alleviate them.

Poverty in America is a difficult topic to speak on; everyone has their own views and experiences on poverty. Certain social trends have impacted the society such as Family Dynamics; The way families are now are a lot different than families of the 1950’s-1960’s, In many cases both adult members of the family are working instead of the traditional husband working to support the family. Even with both members working full time it is still hard to support an average family due to working class wages not adjusting to inflation. Poverty has been increasing at a dramatic rate and the government is supporting more and more people with perverse incentives.
According to Wendy Harris of King County Developmental Disabilities Division, by the time a child is three years old, 85% of their brain has developed (Perry Firth, 2014). That emphasizes the importance of brain development (Perry Firth, 2014). Homelessness and poverty continue to grow at a steady rate in our country, affecting
Despite the great wealth the United States possesses, it has for long struggled with poverty which is said to be inherited from one generation to another. The culture of poverty hinders those affected from economic betterment however much assistance they obtain from social programs put in place. The term Culture of poverty is believed to have been coined by Oscar Lewis, who suggested that children who grow up in poverty-stricken families are highly likely to adopt the norms and practices that encourage poverty. Thus, these children, he believed, would replicate the adapted values in their lives which would in turn generate a cycle of intergenerational poverty in the long run (Bell et al, 2013). Thus the culture of poverty is a topic which creates heated debates in both the public and political arenas.
Low income families do not just get the title “poverty” branded onto them, but they have much more negative effects attached to the label. These families in the bottom third of the income group suffer immensely and this does not solely affect the family as a whole, but it affects each and every individual included. After several readings about how these families are affected, it is important to point out that children are the most unfortunate because of long-term damages. The long-term effects of children in low income families include developmental, psychological and emotional effects.
Poverty is like a disease that is killing this country. What is the government doing to help save this country? For one thing, we need to make more jobs available for people who get the best education. People can’t just survive on minimum wage forever.
2/28/18 Poverty and Education For this literature review, I conducted an analysis of poverty and how poverty affects children and their education. For my internship I work in a low-income school system, I really wanted to dive into what and how this has a role to play in brain and education. The major question that I feel needs to be answered in order to continue this research project is: has been shown to negatively influence child brain development, thus interfering with their success in the academic setting? There are many environmental factors that influence how a child’s brain develops before the age of six. These effects include prenatal care, health conditions, and poor school readiness skills in their language. Children raised in poverty are adversely affected both indirectly and directly through their family’s lack of resources and education.
One of the problems playing a great role in this confusing web is poverty. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definition of poverty is “the state of being extremely poor”. Now many people might think, “So what? Why should I care?”. Well one thing is for sure; we, people, should care.
