COMPARISONS BETWEEN A CLASS WHERE POWER POINT PRESENTAION IS USED TO PRESENT THIS LESSON AND WHERE IT IS NOT
The implications of interposing a PowerPoint presentation between an instructor and students and one taught without PowerPoint or led a case discussion without PowerPoint or acted Socratic-like without PowerPoint, our relationship with students was unmediated and more human, more direct, less pre-meditated and less structured. The pedagogy involved depended on the particular situation, the process of interchange, the verbal and nonverbal communication, the repartee, the facial expressions, and the multitude of things that unfold during unmediated human relationships and dialogue.
These were all “immediacy behaviors” which include such

These problems, of course, are not specifically associated with PowerPoint use but it does have a tendency to make some practitioners feel that the improvements offered by PowerPoint are sufficient to make their presentations more effective. When used appropriately, it does encourage staff, for the sake of a relatively shallow learning-curve, to improve the professionalism and quality of their didactic sessions and facilitates the development and evolution of more interactive and flexible practices. It soon becomes obvious that didactic use represents only a very basic level of practice – PowerPoint is much more powerful and flexible than that and alternative activities can be facilitated by its use, limited only by the creativity of the user. Consider combining media where necessary although you should use multimedia from within PowerPoint cautiously. Use PowerPoint to provide a transparently structured presentation and associated handouts – but don’t include too much detail. Encourage annotation of any derived handouts by students. Consider providing access to files in advance of sessions and encourage preparative viewing, reading, and then annotation of handouts by the students during presentations; this should be in the context of learning to prepare before coming to particular classes rather than only reading material afterward. Emphasise the dictum “Failing to prepare is preparing to
The first thing that jumped out at me was the ability to change fonts and font sizes on the Slide Master. Changes made in the Slide Master will apply to all slides throughout the entire presentation. This eliminates the need to format each slide, and will help free up time for the creator to focus on the material they want to cover in the presentation. Powerpoint also has a setting called AutoFit, which I found helpful. This setting forces a reduction in the size of the text when the user types more words in each text box than it will hold.
Pausch received at the end of his lecture, it would be fair to conclude that it had a great impact on his audience. This lecture portrays how the effective use of basic presentation techniques can create a spellbinding effect on an audience. Dr. Pausch’s lecture gave me a new perspective on life and my career goals. One of his quotes that stood out for me was: “Wait long enough and people will surprise you”. I completely agree with this based on the experiences that I have had as a student at Michigan Tech.
1. When have I learned? In what circumstances? Under what conditions? I have learned during the last two weeks, from working on finishing up our power point presentation.
The computer portrays information in a bland, over-informative way which manages to bore students. Take for example, the University of Southern California’s ‘Think About It’ program. The program seems to cover an important range of topics, but from the click of the start button, students’ eyes become glazed and their minds are zoned out. The students spend hours listening to Cindy, who looks like a stock image figure, give hypothetical scenarios about situations that she has never experienced. Organizational psychologist Elissa Perry did an experiment where she had a group of 36 men watch a video on sexual harassment.
Then I build on that knowledge by working with the class on document A (see instructional material 1.1) then let the class work on the rest of the documents in pairs. Through this method student are shown the material, and the work is modeled for them giving students a better understanding of how to read the documents (Bruner). Allowing students to work in pairs allows for peer learning allowing students to work together, and for students who are accelerated in the class to help those who are struggling with the material (Dewey). This also me to walk around the room, and help groups who are struggling allowing for easier monitoring of progress towards the learning target. Lesson 2 starts by comparing, and contrasting FDR’s handling of Japanese Americans, and how Trump wants to handle immigrants (see instructional material 2.1).
Preview Main Points – Remember that previewing will help establish a pattern of repetition that helps your audience remember and retain the information you present (future
You could improve your PowerPoint slides by using light backgrounds to highlight dark pictures rather than using dark purple background. Also, your speech would have been more effective if you could use large images on each slide.
Estes uses various resources and instructional tools. In class reading varies; teacher led, student led and audio CDs. Technology is not only used by the teacher to present content, but students are also taught how to use technology to demonstrate their learning. Encouraging the use of technology does not only allow students to develop their technology literacy skills, but it also allows them to reach a higher level of understanding and demonstrate a level of creativity that is not obtainable by only using paper and pencils. The use of constant visual aids in material scaffolding would also help the student, especially if the mnemonic device was a poster in the front of the
Sensation and perception are two very different things, that when used together help our brains string together a reality. Sensation is the use of our physical stimuli such as our nose, eyes, ears, and touch. This is where our perception comes in to use these tools to select, organize, and interrupt this information. In the Ted Talk video he states “your perception is not always reality”, which can be a hard concept to grasp and raises a lot of questions. I know people come from all walks of life and backgrounds and have seen different things, and know different things to be true, but how differently do others see the world from me?
Not just the template explanations but actual instructor approved write ups of the assignment. Preferably selected from former students who showed exemplar understanding of content so that learners can have examples on their current level to help with the assignments. Discussions Discussions may need to be altered to incorporate the new information being provided. Not so much how you would use the information provided, but why and would it fit into your particular project. The discussion summary may also contain reminders of the examples and expectations from the assignments which is something easily
Mr. Marbert told the class that there would be a presentation that would be due at the end of the semester but that this presentation could be completed in groups. I was in a group with two other students and we chose to create an informative presentation about essential oils. The presentation was to be presented at the end of November to the class. Each group member chose a specific topic within essential oils and created PowerPoint slides to go along with their topic. The PowerPoint only had a few bullet points per slide and pictures to accompany each slide.
In the classroom, technology can encompass all kinds of tools from low-tech pencil, paper, and chalkboard, to the use of presentation software, or high-tech tablets, online collaboration and conferencing tools, and more. The newest technologies allow us to try things in physical and virtual classrooms that were not possible before. Today, I cannot imagine how difficult it is to teach without technology and how hard it is to learn without it. Technology plays a major part in our lives as students.
in the classroom. During our everyday life, all the time we are in contact with lots of visuals, which can be beneficial for learning too. Researchers believed in the positive effect of visuals on learning. Gambrell and Jawitz (1993) indicated that visuals aids which are used during teaching a text can improve the comprehension of the text, as using them makes learners more engaged in the text. The impact of visuals in the process of teaching is so important, as using unrelated visuals can decrease the learning of learners.
But many pupils do not have adequate Language proficiency to learn from this excessive verbalism. Hence it interferes with effective class-room communication. To avoid excessive verbalismthe teacher may use a variety of instructional materials like charts, diagrams, specimens, models, tape recorders, sound films, video-cassettes and many others which use the best of the communication techniques to transmit the subject
