Over the last 100 decades, automobiles have impacted our lives in tremendous ways; they have offered mobility which we exploit and manipulate in all our business activities around the globe. They have also furnished newer opportunities to millions of us in the form of personal transportation.
At the core of automobile design is the powertrain system; it is the engineering and working of the powertrain that has been a driving force behind the mobility. In relative terms powertrain constitutes the main components that generate power and energy and deliver the same to air, water or roads.
The internal combustion or the IC engine is a crucial part in the powertrain system as it dominates the power source, which is in return controlled by a driveline …show more content…

This gear cutter was exclusive as the automatic motions exhibited by the machine were controlled by intermittent stops. By the late 1880’s the gear cutting machine was so popular that George Grant in the year 1889 developed a customised gear machine and started his own gear cutting shop.
In 1884, the gear shaper was manufactured by Huge Bilgram of Philadelphia. In 1889, James Gleason produced the bevel gears with the help of rotary cutters and a combination of motions –lateral and cutter carrier.
One of the greatest contributions to the gear manufacturing was that of Edwin Fellows, as he had invented an advanced gear cutter that would be required for automobiles.
By the start of the 21st century, hobbing became a great phenomenon in gear manufacturing. Ramsden of England made an attempt to create hobbing machines in the year 1766. Joseph Whitworth significantly contributed to the gear manufacturing in the year 1835 by producing machines to hob spiral gears.
Over the years newer cutting materials came into existence, the older becoming obsolete. Several machines evolved and took to newer forms – crankshaft, gear boxes, camshafts, valves, connecting rods, piston rods etc were used as an integral part of the automobile industry.

They account for 70% of both bonded and coated abrasives which has a total value of Rs. 300 crores. The other players in the abrasive industry cater to local customers and their demands predominantly. They also indulge in manufacturing specific product categories.
INDUSTRY GROWTH
It is predicted that the Indian abrasives industry will continue to grow at 8-10% per annum. Currently the growth rate of the Indian abrasives market has amounted up to 2-3%.
RAW MATERIALS
This industry predominantly uses abrasives grains of Silicon Carbide, Aluminium Oxide and Zirconia of grit size 8 – 1200. Fine grains of abrasives are usually manufactured in factories and sites. Certain raw materials for abrasives are unavailable; hence are imported from countries such as Zambia, South Africa and China. Some of the raw materials imported are fibres, special quality paper for waterproof backing and splicing agents.
