Introduction For this assignment, I decided to record the conversation with my practicum partner, Hanna. She is a university student who faced issues with handling a difficult sister who is not very accepting of Hanna’s boyfriend. I will emphasize the pertinent parts of my conversation with her based on the application of skills, knowledge and attitude I gained from in-class discussions, past role-plays and practicum sessions. This video assignment also serves as a platform to apply the skills, knowledge and provide areas for improvement for future peer helping situations. Rationale for choosing Hanna as my client Given that Hanna and I had several practicum sessions prior to this assignment, I thought it will be beneficial for me to choose …show more content…
This was apparent mainly in the initial part where I went on to ask another question even before the first one was answered. For instance, I greeted her and continued talking before she could respond to my greetings. On one hand, it could mean that I was overzealous to start the peer helping conversation. But I couldn’t deny the other view where it could also mean that I was impatient and I was more concerned with the professional aspect rather than incorporating the aspect of social concern. After reflecting on the video, I realized I should have waited for an answer before proceeding. This clearly showed that my attending skills were affected especially in the contextual perspective (Maguire and Pitceathly, 2002). One of the contextual attending skills that I was lacking was the ability to welcome efficiently and make her comfortable hence making her feel uneasy at the start. From this, I learnt to be more patient and think through my responses internally before speaking to my client. Alternatively, I could have used silence to think carefully of what I wish to express before sharing it with my
The NA meeting had a guest speaker named Adam, the most surprising thing about meeting were candor and humor evoked by the speaker. Adam acknowledged that he has been addicted to drugs for seventeen years, and this behavior started when he was in the 7th grade. Adam was genuinely outspoken and humorously shared being in and out of treatment facilities over 28 times costing hundreds of thousands of dollars. The group really identified with the speakers story, and this was exhibited by laughter and comments from the crowd. Actually, I didn’t have any perceived notions about attend NA meeting, my only contention was to better understand this community.
AA Meeting Reflection Many people who have never had an addiction may not understand the difficulty of becoming better, and that is because we have never been in circumstances where our life depended upon a substance (Berry & Ramnath, 2013). However, for people who have had a substance addiction, the difficulty to becoming better is harder because they need to regain control over their thoughts and lives. According to the alcoholic anonymous recovery program, a twelve-step meeting is a very efficient program that helps people regain control over their thoughts and their lives. One vital part of this program is the twelve traditions and twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Although the overall goal of this meeting is for members to stay sober while
The community group I visited was Beaches Unity Group, which was located at 322 Penman Road. This was an Alcoholics Anonymous group that provided open discussion for people who were both struggling with alcohol abuse, as well as addiction. It gave the participants an opportunity to introduce themselves, and tell their background story. There where also opportunities to offer advice to the other members. I decided to sit in an AA group because there is history of alcoholism in my family, and so I was curious to hear the stories of other people, and how they are coping with their disorder.
This type of proficiency enhances the trust within the relationship. This type of professional behaviour allows the women to ascertain I have an interest in her choice and the the care she receives (RCOG
I was interested in hearing stories and experiences of those who struggled with drug addiction. I wondered if I would receive any insight regarding my family members who have suffered from drug addiction. Going into the meeting, I was prepared to introduce myself if necessary and did not hold feelings of anxiety regarding the potential necessity for introduction. Upon arrival, I noticed a big church with various entrances. I was unsure where to enter and did not want to enter into the wrong door.
For this reflection assignment I attended an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. The AA meeting I attended was at St. Joe’s Education Center in Ypsilanti at 7:30 pm. As far as the demographics of the group: The number in attendance was about 60 people I would say, it was very packed surprisingly to me. I did not expect it to be that many people there. When I think of an AA meeting I think of a small meeting with maybe 20 people that are a close group not around 60.
Reflecting on the past seven weeks I have acquired countless knowledge, which I will use to further strengthen my profession as an Advanced Practice Nurse. The course allowed me to think beyond my current practice knowledge and acquired innovative ways to evaluate the situation at hand. The learning objective in program outcome four helps set standards that I will use to guide my clinical practice to meet various healthcare needs. Using the case studies has helped to further enhance my knowledge on disease physiological state, using differential diagnosis, disease manifestations, and clinical presentation. It has also taught me the skills on how to differentiate between similar diagnoses to properly identify the problem and treat the patients.
I learned valuable information through this interview process. The parent I had the pleasure of interviewing was the PTO president, whose son is in my classroom. Interviewing my mentor teacher and principal gave me a different insight into how the school operates. The principal spoke about the make-up of the school, while my mentor teacher and the parent talked more about how they felt about it as a community. When asked about parent involvement, my principal and mentor teacher talked about the different events and opportunities for parents to come into the school, including, family fun night, dad and mom days, and open house.
The focus is on helping—prosocial acts in dyadic circumstances in which one individual is in need and another gives the vital help to wipe out the other's
Evolution from Novice to a Beginning Professional Nurse Looking back when I started my nursing school, I can proudly say that I have evolved both physically and psychologically. I was not sure if nursing was the right choice for me at first because I had difficulties interacting with people outside my family circle. The first semester was challenging for me because I did not know how to interact with my class mates and felt isolated each time there is a class activity. I joined a study group later that semester and it has been an excitement ever since.
Introduction Human beings need to communicate almost everyday. Whether it is at work, within a group of friends, or even in ones home. When people are in a familiar place, they seem to be at ease; both in terms of conveying thoughts and ideas, and in the way they speak. However, when people are in surroundings that they are not accustomed to, their confidence levels tend to drop. The regular human being ranks the apprehension of public speaking higher than that of death.
Effective relationships should be a common goal for all to strive for. The learner believes that there are four major signs that make us human; the need to love, the need to be loved, the need to be accepted and the need to be respected as an individual. None of these things can be accomplished alone, therefore, a relationship needs to be formed. The more effective the relationship the more these needs are able to be met. In the study of marriage and family we look into the areas that can either make or break relationships.
Critically reflect on how one or two insights gained during Personal Development and Skills Practice (in G108353 2017/18) have prepared you to become an aware and ethical user of counselling skills. Does a counsellor’s age matter? This is a question I have been considering throughout my time on this course and the answer is not straightforward. Within this essay I will critically reflect on my insight about age and counselling, and through doing this how it has prepared me to become more of an aware and ethical user of counselling skills. Van Wagoner (1991) says Therapist self-insight refers to the extent to which a therapist is aware of one’s own feelings and understands their basis.
Professional reflection As I began my field experience journey, I learned many roles and responsibilities as elementary teacher. My duration in the field was nine weeks. I began training at E. R. Dickson. I developed a great working relationship with the staff and parents in the community. I always knew teaching is my passion.
Have you ever had a relationship in life that started out okay, but turned into an awkward and fragmented relationship? I have, and it started between my older sister and me. We grew up together as good siblings, playing hide and seek and doing what normal siblings would do. But later in life, things started to take a darker and unnatural turn which disturbed me as a person. In this paper, I will discuss my relationship with my sister by describing my earlier years with her, and I will also discuss what led to our relationship becoming fragmented through my later years in life.
