Introduction
Breathing is one of the most important activities that is associated with us. Our very life starts with our first breath and ends with the last breath. Cellular respiration, which is the main source of energy depends on the flow of oxygen being supplied to each cell and carbon dioxide being taken away. Happiness, Sorrow, Fear, Anger and every other emotional state has a breathing associated with it. The rhythmic beats of our heart is connected intimately with the action of the lungs. Breathing in deals with charging of our body through the supply of oxygen while breathing out releases the carbon dioxide along with taking away the toxic wastes; this balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide can be attained through an ancient yogic breathing technique called Pranayama.
What is Pranayama?
Pranayama is a Sanskrit word which is made of “prana” which means life force and “ayama” which means to extend or draw out. Pranayama is an ancient technique, which is nearly over 5000 years old. Also called as yogic breathing, pranayama deals with control of the prana through breath. Prana refers to the energy which controls the world around us. The process of digestion, adjustment of the heart rate after activities that expends energy, fighting against diseases, all these tasks are complex, yet they take place effortlessly and happens in a flow, all through the function of prana.
