Issue and Definition
Priesthood plays an essential aspect in the structure of the Roman Catholic Church. The ministerial orders of priests are employed with the authority of leading the congregations of the Church and performing the ordinances of the Church, such as baptism. Society’s patriarchal standards have been called into question as these rules stem from a much different time in history than today. Women are no longer restricted to mundane traditional duties such as cleaning. Today a woman is pursuing the most powerful position in the world as Hilary Clinton mounts her campaign to become the first female president of the United States of America. If a woman can be a world leader, should she then be endowed the ability to become a priest?

Several Bible passages provide evidence that women were permitted a full sacramental ordination in early Christianity. “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchrea” Romans 16:1. By not allowing the ordination of women, the Church has limited its potential supply of priests. Research conducted by the Centre of Applied Research in the Apostolate revealed that whilst the worldwide Catholic population increased by 57% between 1975 and 2005, the number of priests in the Church declined by 7,000. Furthermore, as gender equality has evolved, many Protestant denominations (eg. Anglican) have adopted the priestly ordination of women. Perhaps in the future we will see a return to Anglicanism as the dominant Christian variant in Australia due to the decline of Catholic priests negatively effecting its congregation. Considering they entered what was an all-male clergy, it is staggering to see the increase in Anglican Female priests over a 10 year period. Between 2002 and 2012 female clergy (full-time) increased by 41% whilst males decreased by 21%, rendering women 1 in 5 members of clergy. Perhaps the Catholic priest shortage would be remedied with the admission of women, additionally bringing a dated patriarchy into the modern era. Equality is strongly supported by the Second Vatican Council which calls
However, it does seem that the women were not involved with the council, or deliberation process. Tacitus writes, “When the multitude think proper… if they are satisfied they brandish their spears”7, meaning they were the generals and warriors which would not have been women. Priests also have a high status in both cultures; in the tribe they administer religious punishment to inspire the warriors and acted as mediators8, in the Empire they acted more like administrative officials. In battle, they gained courage from their family and clan members who were fighting with them, and they were polytheistic. They also had an initiation process for
This is important as the change in education implemented the idea that educated women would divert from Christian values but a man strongly opposing the idea dismisses it, and lends a supportive perspective of educated women. However, something that is not showcased in this document is that women were taught theology, basic arithmetic, and language which limited them to their lives at home. Not being so educated in a vast variety of subjects like the men of their times eventually led to the downfall of women. They lost power and and didn’t have a very crucial role in shaping

The ideal woman of this time period was a pure, feminine, and submissive woman that was always considered inferior to men mentally and physically (Lavender 1). Women thus became the face of religion, and became their job to convert the men of the country back
There are roughly 4,200 religions in the world. A religion is sometimes used to adjust someone's faith or beliefs, and overall their life. Some of the ways as to how religion affects the lives of its followers are socially and politcally. Socially, it affects how people treat others, how people act toward themselves and how people live. Politically, it affects leadership, law and the wealthiness of the government.
Catholic clergy had spent centuries preaching on the superiority of the celibate, but the Protestant Reformation brought an end to that stigma. Calvin and other prominent Protestant leaders touted marriage as the vehicle to fulfill humanity’s call to ‘multiply across the Earth [from the Biblical book of Genesis].’ As such, marriage ministries were developed in churches to facilitate marital relationships (Document 5). Calvin’s stated

Annotation Author's Purpose: This is a critical review of the ideas expressed in Rod 'Dreher's book, The Benedict Option. Dreher sees the cultural wars over new realities (such as LGBT) as a threat to Christian faith, and suggests the option of St. Benedict (sixth-century monk) during the fall of the Roman empire, i.e. withdraw from the mainstream and establish
In 1692, people were accused of casting spells, which meant they were siding with the devil in Salem, New England. Many people who lived in the countryside of Salem believed that the Holy Bible were God’s direct words and should be followed precisely. Women were more likely to be accused of casting spells because they were expected to be at home, listen to their husband, and weren’t aloud to be ministers so there were more likely to preach the devil. People believe that women aren’t good enough and men are superior to women, even now in this century. There is still a pay in inequality between the average men and women.
Women may serve in any lay office in the local church. In the National Baptist Convention of America women generally hold no offices, locally or nationally. In the National Baptist Convention, Inc. women officers are limited to the usher’s auxiliary and the women’s convention, however, a women does serve as the Executive Director of the Sunday School Publishing Board.
I think there is not a way to improve the women status in Buddhist monastic order, because Buddhism has a long tradition and history. They always follow and practice accordingly to the ritual and believe of the people in the past. The only possible way to improve women’s status would be a profound change toward women role and power in the cultural and tradition of the people who practice
Women were held responsible for the first original sin or sometimes known as the fall of mankind. Since Eve took the apple from the snake the church felt it was necessary to punish all women for her mistakes. In the book of Genesis, God tells Eve “Your Desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you” (Hopkins 5-6). People during the Medieval Society took this as an order that women should at all times be obedient to their Summerlin 2 husbands. The church got rich off of peoples fear of the devil and again, women were the subject of
Even religion creates a patriarchal system, Christians are called to love their neighbor. A person to love their neighbor is treating everyone as an equal. Society needs to garner equality between women and men because of the inequality going on in
The Catholic Church was not only a system which contended with secular potentates for governing power, it also maintained an ideal of morality. From the earliest times there appears to have existed among the Teutonic and Celtic peoples so much respect for women as to form a foundation on which the Christian doctrine of marriage, virginity and equality of sexes could be built. Monogamy was the common practice, but polygamy was not unknown, especially among the Danes and Northmen. As soon as those nations were converted to Christianity, the Church assumed the regulation of morals.
The divine command theory, utilitarianism, Kant’s duty defined morality, natural law theory, and Aristotle’s virtue ethics are the five types of ethical theories. The divine command theory states that what is morally right and wrong will be decided by God. Utilitarianism states that “Action “A” is morally right if and only if it produces the greatest amount of overall happiness. Kant’s duty defined morality states that what is important is acting for the sake of producing good consequences, no matter what the act is. Natural law theory states that people should focus on the good and avoid any evil.
As I stepped out of my car, I acknowledge that the church was surrounded by trees, which gave it a calming and peaceful sensation, the building was long with a triangular shaped form, with burgundy bricks surroundings and a bit of white in the front entrance and some at the very top and sides with a dark beige roofing to give the church some color, the windows seemed to be a tinted crystal glass that was designed with blues and a beige color. As I made my way into the church their was an entry room where a man and a women and what seemed to be their two children greeted me and handed me a pamphlet that described what was going to take place in that days Sunday school and mass, then I made my way to another pair of doors where I could hear the choir singing, as I opened the doors the inside of the church was a tan wood looking color all around and had matching tan benches with burgundy red bedding to match the carpet, the thing that stood out most to me when I walked in was the large cross that was in the very front that shined very bright as if the sun was hitting it to give the whole church light, when I looked below the cross, the choir was singing and beside it was a women playing a piano with so much passion and in front of them was a the pastors book stand also a matching tan color with his bible. The people were very kind as I sat down next to a friend that attends that church, they welcomed me with open arms and talked a bit about them self’s and the amount of time
