Issue and Definition
Priesthood plays an essential aspect in the structure of the Roman Catholic Church. The ministerial orders of priests are employed with the authority of leading the congregations of the Church and performing the ordinances of the Church, such as baptism. Society’s patriarchal standards have been called into question as these rules stem from a much different time in history than today. Women are no longer restricted to mundane traditional duties such as cleaning. Today a woman is pursuing the most powerful position in the world as Hilary Clinton mounts her campaign to become the first female president of the United States of America. Several Bible passages provide evidence that women were permitted a full sacramental ordination in early Christianity. “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church at Cenchrea” Romans 16:1. By not allowing the ordination of women, the Church has limited its potential supply of priests. Research conducted by the Centre of Applied Research in the Apostolate revealed that whilst the worldwide Catholic population increased by 57% between 1975 and 2005, the number of priests in the Church declined by 7,000. Furthermore, as gender equality has evolved, many Protestant denominations (eg. Anglican) have adopted the priestly ordination of women. Perhaps in the future we will see a return to Anglicanism as the dominant Christian variant in Australia due to the decline of Catholic priests negatively effecting its congregation. Considering they entered what was an all-male clergy, it is staggering to see the increase in Anglican Female priests over a 10 year period. Between 2002 and 2012 female clergy (full-time) increased by 41% whilst males decreased by 21%, rendering women 1 in 5 members of clergy. Perhaps the Catholic priest shortage would be remedied with the admission of women, additionally bringing a dated patriarchy into the modern era.
