No matter where you are from or how old you are, we have all heard of Lady Diana, Princess of Wales. Throughout history many things have been said about her, her relationship with Prince Charles or the impact she had on British and even global society. Many have been the rumors that have surrounded her figure even after her death, but ... how much truth is there in all this? What did her presence in the royal family mean for the English?
Diana Spencer was born in 1961 on July 1st. Her parents were Edward John Spencer and Frances Ruth Burke Roche, Viscount and Viscountess Althorp. The prince finally proposed to Diana in February 1981 and she accepted. The couple got married on July 29th. The ceremony of the weeding was seen by the whole world since it was broadcast and it was considered the wedding of the century and also one of the most expensive: Diana’s dress cost around £9000 and the total cost was almost 50 million pounds. One year after getting married, Charles and Diana have their first son William Arthur Philip Louis and then, in 1984 Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born.
Initially and unlike the rest of the royal family, Diana supported many charities and collaborated with the homeless and AIDS patients, as well as disadvantaged children.
But unfortunately, the marriage started to have problems: they became distant as the years passed and there were rumors about infidelities from both parts. The couple announced that they were getting divorced in December 1992. The divorce was effective in 1996. Before it came official, in 1995 Diana had an interview for the BBC where the Princess spoke for the first time about her divorce with Prince Charles to the reporter Martin Bashir. M.S: Around 1986, again according to the biography written by Jonathan Dimbleby about your husband, he says that your husband renewed his relationship with Mrs. Camilla Parker-Bowles. Were you aware of that?
H.R.H: Yes I was, but I wasn't in a position to do anything about it.
M.S: What evidence did you have that their relationship was continuing even though you were married?
H.R.H: Oh, a woman's instinct is a very good one.
In spite of this, she said she actually didn’t want to get a divorce. She also talked about her children, her depression and also the monarchy and its future:
M.S: Do you think the monarchy needs to adapt and to change in order to survive?
H.R.H: I understand that change is frightening for people, especially if there's nothing to go to. It's best to stay where you are. I understand that. But I do think that there are a few things that could change, that would alleviate this doubt, and sometimes complicated relationship between monarchy and public. I think they could walk hand in hand, as opposed to be so distant.
