Cody henry English 121 Professor Karle 22 October 2015 American prisons and Rehabilitation A prison is a place where people are held legally for punishment of a crime that they have been sentenced for. One of the goals of prisons should be the rehabilitation of prisoners. The United States is currently facing an overcrowding problem in there prison system (Rader). The American prison system has a poor approach to the rehabilitation of prisoners.
Thesis: It is very important for the sake of Americans tax dollars that we change the way that prisons are run and increase the productivity of inmates so when they are released from jail they are ready to be a productive member in society and have the confidence to achieve new goals. Introduction: Day after day, millions of inmates sit in jail doing nothing productive with their lives. We are paying to house inmates that may not even have a good reason to be there. For example, drug offenders are being kept with murderers and other violent offenders.
Additionally, in order to help prisoners to civilize they need centers in the prison to help them. Prisoners inside be able to talk to someone about their issues. Dr Marayca Lopez from penal reform international wrote a article about ‘How to build for success: prison design and infrastructure as a tool for rehabilitation. “A new generation of rehabilitation centers should provide spaces that reduce stress, fear and trauma; spaces that
When the American prison system began, it was believed that rehabilitation, the act of restoring one’s character, could be beneficial for criminals to start over. According to Tom Wicker, “The system…began as a reform impulse, the idea that if offenders were isolated, shielded from the public mockery that had accompanied hangings and the stocks, given time to repent, and worked hard, they could be turned away from crime and transformed into useful citizens” (xii). Criminals could become better citizens and have a positive outlook for a future if they worked hard and were secluded from the outside world. Although this idea seems more humane, it did not last long in the prison system because many people believed that any crime committed deserved
V. PRISON REFORMS The main part of this research paper is the reforms for the conditions of prison and make prison a better place for prisoner and make an alternative for incarceration. The prison Reform for prevention of overcrowding in prisons: A ten-point method for reducing the overcrowding in the prisons all over the world, these points are1: 1. Collect and use data to inform a rational, humane and cost-effective use of prison.
Corruption of the criminal justice system can be reversed when the parties involve take part in legislation of fixing centuries of systematic oppression. In the year of 2017, the government created the Reverse Mass Incarceration Act. The purpose was to decrease the number of prisoners by allocating money to states who continually diminish their crime rate and prison population (Morial). The government has an overwhelming amount of control of prisons, and with this power that is invested should take a course of action by inflicting new ways of justice. The reversing of incarcerating a mass of prisoners would provide opportunities for prisoners to gain direction with their life and make a future for
During her rehabilitation process, she was rehabilitated psychologically because she was placed in a psychiatric institution and getting treatment from committee members. As apart of her sentence, she was allowed to live in a grouped home and enroll in a university after she received her high school diploma by learning in jail as a start on her reintegration into the real world. Lastly, While there are some weak aspects of the YCJA such as the media ban because this policy endangered the public. However, the positive aspect of the YCJA such as the rehabilitation and reintegration outweighs the negative by providing guidance for youth offenders and ensure they have a better future. Helping youth offenders is important because it makes the youth offender recognize their past mistake and decrease their chance in committing a crime again.
Additionally, in an attempt to foster an increase in professionalism within the correctional community, care and consideration must be taken with the care and housing of inmates both privately operated and those operated by some branch of the government. “The quality of prisons has improved from the past, but there continue to be too many inhumane new prisons. New construction does not always result in a prison conductive to humane incarceration” (Bartollas,
Thesis Hypothesis and Statement: Prisons in in the United States of America are definitely overcrowded, they are understaffed and I believe put very little effort on rehabilitation. The U.S. prison system was set up to rehabilitate prisoners so they can blend back into society as good people. But the factors as high crime rate and of course, mandatory sentences have caused a very high over crowding in our jail systems. This have caused a high increase in the budget deficit. Some citizens will say, where was the rehabilitation that we once used and it has all but now disappeared in our prison and jail system today.

Through this foundation, Santos is helping bring awareness to the socials issues that result from mass incarceration while also helping former prisoner transition and integrate successfully back into the work force. Through Santos’s hard work and commitment, Santos successfully helped Maine’s department of corrections enhance their prison system by the virtue of his own programs that he has developed post
This approach also prevents overcrowding in prisons because it also deals with rehabilitative
