In The United States of America, there is an estimated of 26 million animals that are being experimented for scientific and commercial testing. Product experiment can range from soap and shampoo that humans use daily to vaccines that humans receive occasionally to stay healthy. There are some benefits and harm that come with animal testing. The practice of animal testing has been around for hundreds of years, it can be dated back as early as 500 BC, where Physician-scientists such as Aristotle have experimented on animals to acquire more knowledge about living organisms. Proponents say that animal testing permit the development of many products that are able to save both humans and animals. Opponents of animal testing say that it is inhumane and barbaric. There are numerous accounts of animal testing for major medical breakthroughs. Such as Penicillin, in 1940 eight mices were exposed and infected with millions of streptococci bacteria. An hour later, half of the mice were injected with penicillin, and those who receive penicillin survived and those who did not died. This medical breakthrough allowed the cause of death by bacteria infections to be treated. This straightforward animal test has discovered a treatment that was able to save millions of lives, both animals and humans. Another major breakthrough of medicine was Insulin. Millions of people in America are diagnosed with diabetes. In 1889, Josef von Mering and Oskar Minkowski had a dog as a research subject and they injected insulin into a diabetic dog which was close to death, as a result, saved the dog’s life. Although insulin is not a cure, but ever since the first discovery of treatment for diabetes, it has kept millions of people
