Personal Statement What are your professional goals and how might the UW-Madison MSW Program best provide the knowledge, skills, and practice necessary for meeting those goals?
My professional goal is to be in a leadership role in Child Welfare. I envision myself evoking changes in policy and procedure to address internal barriers in social work that negatively impact the community. This would include education to deepen my knowledge base on child welfare and systemic racism. Learning how to diversify the workplace, invest in ongoing training that addresses bias, develop skills to create a clear equity policy for clients, remove harmful policy,

As a white woman who benefits from white supremacy culture, I embrace that learning to be anti-racist is a never-ending journey. Intentionally using framework of understanding interpersonal, institutional, and cultural aspects helps me present to others thoughtfully, addressing harmful biases in the child welfare system and become culturally competent. There is power in building relationships. Promoting a sense of belonging and creating fairer opportunities and outcomes for families is crucial to community

Equity dismantles white supremacy, enhances growth, reduces conflict, and places power in citizens. When people feel valued, safe, and supported they can be less fatigued and focus more on their pursuits and well-being. Additionally, I have the honor and duty to teach my 3 children to be actively anti racist. Creating paradigm shifts for future generations will help ensure sustainability of inclusive and equitable environments.
Reflect on a time when you were confronted with a specific situation that challenged your thoughts on an issue. In your response: 1) briefly describe the specific situation; 2) discuss how you were challenged to think differently about the issue; and 3) explain if you ended up thinking differently and why or why
By understanding and appreciating varied experiences and viewpoints, intersectionality promotes inclusivity. It recognizes that various people confront different issues due to their intersecting identities and ensures that their perspectives are heard and reflected in social justice and policy discussions. Intersectionality has strengthened social justice initiatives by encouraging solidarity among diverse marginalized groups. Recognizing everyday struggles and goals among diverse populations improves collective efforts to address systemic inequities and create a more fair society. Intersectionality aids in identifying core causes of social issues by exploring how intersecting forms of oppression intersect and reinforce one another.
Moreover, I hope to find other organizations and opportunities to serve others, either on or off campus, that will make others' lives better, possibly even becoming involved in initiatives run by the local school system, since I hope to be heavily involved in at least one of the local schools as I
The idea of race has been used to justify systemic racism and bias in areas such as education, housing, employment, and the criminal justice system. This has resulted in disparities in outcomes and opportunities for individuals based on their racial identity. It is time for us to move beyond the concept of race and towards a society based on equality and inclusivity. By recognizing that race is a social construct, we can begin to challenge and dismantle the systems of oppression that perpetuate inequality. This means acknowledging the ways in which racism and bias have been institutionalized and working to dismantle these systems at their root.
By acknowledging and understanding the privileges of my White identity, such as my cultural capital, I hope to change how I perceive issues and interactions with students throughout my future in higher
As an African American, I have a unique set of experiences that are valuable to organizations seeking to promote diversity and inclusivity. My experience can be used to help build bridges between different cultures and create an environment where everyone feels welcome. I am committed to using my knowledge and understanding of African American culture to help create a workplace that is equitable for all employees regardless of their background. By leveraging my experiences, I will strive to make sure that everyone is given the same opportunities for success and that everyone feels included in the workplace. It is very important to use my experience to promote diversity and inclusivity within the scientific community.
Advocating for diverse media representation, promoting education and awareness to challenge biases, enacting and enforcing anti-discrimination legislation, fostering inclusivity in all sectors, addressing implicit biases through training, engaging communities, supporting allyship and advocacy, implementing systemic reforms, empowering marginalized communities, and encouraging ongoing self-reflection are all part of the process. By combining these approaches, society can advance toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all. If you have a position of privilege and/or power, admit it and respect the feelings of others. Avoid racial color blindness, which reduces people of color's experiences. "In the age of colorblindness, using race explicitly as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt is no longer socially acceptable."
One of the points that stood out the most to me was that even though not everyone is necessarily a racist person, everyone inherently holds prejudices. Although I’d like to believe that I am inclusive and not discriminatory, the reality is that I am still prejudiced and that I still discriminate others based on their appearance even though I don’t show it blatantly. Growing up in an Asian household, my parents taught me to be careful of certain
We must remember that discrimination and hate crimes do not just affect the targeted individuals or communities, but they also have far-reaching negative impacts on our society as a whole. We need to work towards creating a society that embraces diversity and promotes unity, where everyone feels safe and valued. We can start by educating ourselves and others about the harmful effects of racial profiling and discrimination, speaking out against hate speech and acts of violence, and advocating for policies that promote equity and justice for all. As we move forward, it is important to acknowledge the harm caused by past injustices and work towards repairing those harmful impacts through meaningful action and systemic change. We must also recognize the intersectionality of discrimination and work towards addressing all forms of oppression, including those based on race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and other
Working with others for change is my solution to this problem that is important to me and those around me. I believe that educating both white Americans and minorities about inequality will bring about a greater equality among
To enhance my experience I would like to work with veterans, adult homeless, and the mentally ill. My objective is to be admitted into the Master of Science degree program with an option in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I can grow and take on new challenges. Ultimately, I would like to assume further educational and gain work experience that would allow me to work more effectively with people with disabilities. Most importantly, I would like to work for an agency where I can build a career in counseling and possibly management. I am driven to be the best at what I do.
To resolve these relating to segregation and educational inequity, educators must face racism upfront. Educators have to confront their own, sometimes unmindful, racism, and then move toward integration that will lead to a better cure of racism or at least a prejudice reduction. Important aspects of a multicultural curriculum include critical thinking, emotional intelligence instruction, character, moral education, peace education, service learning, antiviolence education, and the comprehensive of education etc. Sandra Parks, a successful educator, believes that by adapting the curriculum and by addressing expressions of racism, schools can help students improve to by understanding and dealing with other people, of peoples color and cultural differences. She believes that teachers have to show respect towards their students, their families, and their students' cultural backgrounds.

I want to improve the CPS systems especially, because of work overload a lot of children are suffering. Eventually, I would like to open my own agency that will not only empower and/or encourage children to be there better self but will also secure them a future in life. An agency that is truly going to bring in positive and great results and would not consist of burnouts/work overload. Experience as a Student In undergraduate school, there were a lot of good moments, as well as struggling moments.
I want to strive to be a better person, so I could make a change in a young person’s life and know when I go home on a night, that I made a difference and that's why I want to pursue my career as a social worker. When I realized that I wanted to be a social worker, I was in my junior year of high school. I knew I wanted to help people, children especially, but I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to go into. I thought I wanted to be in Neonatology or another profession like it. When I first witnessed a social worker, I was getting a treatment in the hospital and saw a social worker working with a family who child had a broken pelvis.
Equality is important because students must feel like they have the same chance to succeed as the other students in class with them. Equity is meeting the individual needs of
