Professional Mourners: Professional mourners are women who become professional with their ability to integrate themselves with the family of the deceased with their extreme display of emotions. Their physical display of grief makes it seem as though they were attached to them for years. This rather grand display of emotions makes the others grieve even more, however none of the actions …show more content…
Due to the death relatives of the family and villagers gathered in front of the house. The uncle of the narrator is the master of ceremonies and due to his dominating character he catches the attention of the readers. The narrator’s uncle’s is ‘a teacher of small school and a trifle mad’ according to the narrator. As the master of the ceremonies he arranged the whole ceremony. It seems that he is a arrogant character without pity and a person who focuses too much on caste and class. Apart from all the tasks at the funeral house his concentration goes for professional mourners. The fact that he rushed out to seek the mourners shows how the funeral instead of being genuine becomes an act where crocodile tears are shed. The master became more furious and physically drags them with their saris to mourn for the grandmother .This shows how the uncle not only uses mental power over the lower cast but also does not hesitate to physically over power them. This shows how the powerful people in the society can dictate their terms and enforce their will on the lower caste and class of the society. The story depicts the caste and class as a rigid inhuman system as most of the time low class associates with illiteracy, poverty, and servility. For example the uncle upbraided the fishermen who were getting ready to go fishing for not coming to respect his aunt. For him the poor fishermen were …show more content…
The educated people of the family are more considerate and sympathetic when they found out that the mother of two mourners passed away and they paid them and asked them to leave as they felt bad for them. So it seems that the educated people who have a sufficient amount of knowledge dissociate themselves from the rigid conventions of the caste system. Other than the criticising the rigid caste system, the writer criticises the artificial character of professional mourners. V. Themes: Main Themes of professional mourners • Celebration of power- it shows how the upper classes force their power over the lower classes i.e. physically and mentally. • Dehumanisation - this also shows how the upper class deny the basic rights of the lower class just due to their social standing in the society. Sub themes of professional mourners: Hypocrisy behind social customs – the story according to the narrator who is a grandson of the dead person critically looks at the actions of the uncle’s and performance of the professional mourners. The rigidity of the cast system– The uncle shows no respect to the professional mourners and also his attitude towards the fishermen show the general cast rigidity of the people especially the uncle .Story shows how the upper cast who are rich treat the poor and low cast. Treatment for women in conventional society– The story shows how women are treated in the society and looked down on. It also shows they are not treated
“The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” and “Abuelito Who” compare and contrast Literary Analysis’ Almost every folk tale and poem express a universal theme or central idea, which are found in “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” and “Abuelito Who.” The two literary works share the writing attributes of characters and the message that the readers receive from the passage, but , they are both categorized under two different genres. The reason why the characters in “The Old Grandfather and his Little Grandson” and “Abuelito Who” are extremely similar is because they both are described with identical characters. Also, their universal themes happen to disseminate the exact same moral, while the authors wrote them in two dissimilar writing styles.
The family accepts them and invites her to the funeral. When she attends, she is embarrassed by her own weeping. She is homesick, and has been making attempts to belong for so long, and this reminds her of what she left behind. The funeral ended at the crematorium, a symbolic act of immolation. It’s possible that her unease at this part of the ceremony is related to the dislike which Westerners have about facing mortality, but it could also be that the reminder of the limitation of time made her shallow attempts at connecting with others seem ludicrous.
After reading this book “Mama Might Be Better off Dead” my perception of life has changed. I guess this story open my eyes of to what could happen to a family if they do not have adequate healthcare in America. My eyes became open to the point that many American families are suffering and are crying for help and if not addressed the cry will become louder, due to the expected increase in the ageing population in America in the next twenty years. Coming from a similar background as the Bane’s family, where I’m also African American born and raised on the Westside of Chicago, and also grow up in a life of poverty, I guess this book had a direct affect on me. I seriously began to think critically about the future of my family’s health, particularly my mother.
Their characteristics of their actions and words show the relationship that these people have within their families. And it was not a caring-and-love one family relationship. They let their tradition tear family apart, which they can stop if they are willing to do it. Throughout reading this short story, it informs the audiences that each individual character in this story have similar characteristics--loneliness-- except children, who does not fully understand family bonds. This story also shows their appearance of selfishness.

The story shows how you should always be thankful for what you have because it could be gone within a second. Growing up underprivileged definitely teaches you things that you would not have learned or viewed in that way if you were middle class/upper class. Growing up poor can have a huge effect upon yourself, but you learn, develop and become
He tries to replace the concepts of high class and low class when he argues with the staff at the festival, “down here is high-class, you say? And up there is lower-class?” (26 Chae). The conversation between him and the staff mirrors that he is a material and unreasonable person. The author seems to introduce the subtitle of this story “Let Everyone Else Go to Hell”(30 Chae).
The author uses the emotions of both the narrator and the grandmother to show their different opinions on how they see their identities. “The awful grandmother knits the names of the people who have died and of the people who are still alive into one long prayer fringed with the grandchildren born in that barbaric country with its
Another antagonist thing from the story about the villagers went along with the tradition and didnt think about the consequences of the death that happens when they get stoned to death. The family is very heartless because they even stoned tessie to death and they even made sure that the little boy had little pebbles to throw at tessie. In the story there is no antagonist character or person in the story. The antagonist which is the family the familly turned there back on tessie and the villagers is agenst the protagonist who is tessie. \ Aother important literary device in this story is the theme, it defines the message about life or human nature that is “the focus” in the story that that the writer telles (Teaching....3).

His brothers didn’t agree with his reluctance to stand up to Yeh-yeh. He grows more and more weary as time passes and his former love and wife both die. Both of these deaths could have possibly been prevented if he had only spoken out against his grandfather’s demands and defied the system. His wife dies during the birth of their second child. There was this superstition that his elders believed in called the “bloodglow”.
The movie also shows us what happens in this world when people see others as less than themselves. As with the example of Judy defending her friend against the fox. She is scratched by him but in the end still does not let her natural instincts of fear overpower her dreams. Judy is classified as the weakest link throughout the movie, but continues to prove herself against the odds. The examples of social classes throughout the movie I think are also very close to what our social classes look like today.
In another instance, we find out that his best friend Marial was killed by a lion and that he was greatly affected by the death of his friend but through this, his uncle was there to comfort him and protect him. This tells us
