In the United States of America, law enforcement agencies are at times concerned with developing the leadership capabilities they need to become an effective leader. Researchers stated that interpersonal skills in law enforcement agencies is important because police officers are taught to treat all individuals with respect, courtesy, and sensitivity (Leadership Core Competencies, n.d.). People from different backgrounds responds differently, so it is important to learn how to receive and give feedbacks in order to create positive situation. If a police officer does not have the skills to develop interpersonal skills, they should work on speaking skills as well as work with personal relationships such as relatives, coworkers, and the community.
The law enforcement officers are the ones that are involved in the daily interactions with the people. As a result, motivation is an essential element especially since their duties sometimes involve the confrontation with life and death situations. The law enforcement officers determine the service received by the community. They also determine the overall reputation of the law enforcement agency where they originate. As a result, the integrity and professional conduct among the law enforcement officers is essential to the process of building a positive reputation of the agency.
However, in realization, there is no training program that can automatically change one’s attitudes and views, but the appropriate education and training, coupled with effective monitoring and enforcement strategies, can help encourage positive behavior from law enforcement officers, another problem is how minorities groups are discriminated- officers target minorities for traffic stops for an arrest of minorities, lack of understanding of diverse culture with the lack of established policies that support diverse policing and disrespect human rights (King, 2014) and diversity is critical to the recruiting mission, and an agency must be aggressive in their hiring practices, as every agency is looking to have a police force reflective of their respective communities. Have feelers out in the community and use community members on hiring interview boards. This increases buy-in and demonstrates an agency’s commitment to the community. Recruit and select officers who identify and bond with the agency culture (organizational fit), who are compatible with and capable of achieving organizational goals, and who understand community demographics. If officers bond with the agency and the community, they are more likely to be effective and maintain
In a rural town in Upstate New York, I reside with my husband of 19 years together we have a daughter who is 17 and a son who is 13. Olivia will be going to Medialle College in Buffalo, New York this fall, and Louis will play modified football for the Whitesboro Football team. We are looking forward to retirement and leaving the chaotic weather cycle in New York. My goal is to retire as a corrections officer and further my career as a corrections consultant. July 20, 1992 I started my career as Corrections Officer at the County Sheriff 's Office.
Law enforcement officers are entrusted with the task of retrieving information and delivering it to judicial officers for purposes of prosecution. Albeit grudgingly, it is blatant that some of the information is also used to perpetrate extra judicial killings of suspects. That is however a topic for discussion on another day. Closer home and
A career in policing requires an individual to meet a high standard for character and demonstrated behavior, in order to be developed into an effective officer. Succeeding in a police academy requires the candidate to display and apply integrity, a skill which must be developed before receiving admission. Integrity demonstrated through a police officer’s personal life, provides the foundation for a respected career. When presented with the opportunity to leverage a peace officer’s position for personal profit, an individual who has previously made selfless choices, is more reliable for operating within the law. Integrity as a term has the social implication of following ones beliefs, regardless of the opposition.
The media needs to stop telling us otherwise. Professionalism covers a vast category of traits and skills an individual must process to be successful in a career. In this mini paper I will only have time to mention some of these traits and skills. As a candidate to become Chief of Police I would set standards for professionalism that are reinforced with both positive incentives for good actions and punishment when necessary.
My top priority is to make an impact that affects others internal and external for the rest of their life in a positive way. My academic and extracurricular activities mark me and make me who am I today they are equally important and extra activities are what I looked forward to throughout the day of school. Since I was a kid I always thought about being a singer but I couldn’t sing. Later when I was old enough to figure out my career path I felt that I was wanted to do anything in criminal justice.
It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
I am applying to be a Police Officer with the North Liberty Police Department. I have many of the desired traits that a police officer ought to have, and with these traits, I have a desire to learn, and do whatever I need to do to be the best officer I can be. Some traits that are good in a police officer, among many, are being responsible, respectful, and organized. A police officer is, by most people, considered to be someone that citizens of all ages can look up to.
What is the relation between a leader and followers? Leader-followers relation is the basically the most important issues in any kind of leadership because without followers leaders don’t exist. Furthermore, perception of followers about the leaders and their performance are the reflection of how successful the leader is. In order words, success of a leader is judged on the basis of their followers’ performance and inspiration level the leader has given. This means the followers coms first and then leaders.
One of the challenges includes job responsibilities and expectations. The law enforcement community and officers may have varying responsibilities when it comes to their jobs, missions as well as professional cultures with varying expectations in regards to the definition of bullying, what constitutes suitable response4s to bullying and the ways it can be prevented. Law enforcement officers and school personnel’s more often operate according to various rules. For instance, school officials have a set of school rules and codes to enforce while law enforcement officers must at all times uphold the law. Another challenge is negative perception.
