In this paper we conduct the study in which we explain the concepts of profession and professionalism and the extensive use of these concepts in different professional groups.. Then paper shows the comparison of professionalism & professionalization. Moreover in this study, paper shows the different aspects of professionalism in Teaching, Comparison of Old vs. New professionalism, professionalism in Journalism, medicines, nursing, military and so on. As a member of staff, his or her activities stood dissimilar to the artisan or craftsman or whose expertise was acquired through physical labor via traditional approaches. During the Victorian era which was from 1837 to 1901, “ism" was added to coin the word “professionalism", which meant a practice or condition that was related to a doctrine, principle, characteristic, dedication or loyalty. Henceforth, putting both together gives a definition of professionalism as the practice of an acquired scientific learning in accordance with its Policies, Principles and Doctrines.
Considering the historical evolution of the word professionalism it becomes obvious that its meaning and concept has been greatly distorted and abused for various political reasons. Now, the meaning of professionalism has once again changed; probably back to its unique notion of hard work, trustworthiness and social awareness. Clothes can get dirty very easily at work, due to the fact that I am continuously dealing with stock and various boxes/cartons which may be dusty. Not presenting yourself well at work can be an issue as it does not promote self-respect, and has a negative psychological effect on customers. People do not mean to have judgmental thoughts, but it is a natural instinct to disregard, or not trust someone dressed poorly, opposed to someone who appears sharp and visually pleasing. Customer perception majorly affects the quality of customer service. If one does not take pride in their appearance customers instantaneously think they do not care about their job and will most likely put off serving them to the best of their ability.
The Nurse of the Future (NOF) Core Competencies Models were choosing to achieve one optimal goal of providing quality of care to patients and their families. The NOF Nursing Core Competency provides a normal structured of approach to nursing and patient care, and they are all equally important in their unique ways. However, out of the 10 Nurse of the Future Core Competencies, I have chosen Healthcare professionalism and quality improvement which in my opinion are two main core outstanding competencies. Professionalism in any profession dictates the conduct, purpose, or qualities that define a profession.
There are two divisions of professional identity, one refers to how a company or organisation conducts their practice while the other refers to how the individual staff portrays themselves under the company's codes. An occupational therapist's professional identity is a crucial element within their practice as it enables them to "function in different practice settings" (Kielhofner, 2009, p.10) and connect to different types of clients that may arise within their practice. Professional identity can also be shaped by the social value of that profession, and thus guides the delivery of their health and human services. As occupational therapy is valued as a leading profession and is highly regarded, professionals in this discipline are required to present themselves in the same highly regarded fashion. This obliges them to dress not only neatly but also interact with their clients in a formal, educated and knowledgeable way, in order to reflect the disciplines professionalism.
What makes certain clothing respectable? By the way they are sewn or by the people that wear them, people have deemed some clothing to be more “respectable” than others. At Seton Hall Prep, students are required to wear a blazer, button down shirt, tie, and pants with a belt. To quote the Seton Hall Preparatory School’s student handbook, “it is our belief that one’s external appearance will reflect and also encourage certain internal attitudes that are essential to a Seton Hall Prep student.” Their philosophy presents that one’s first impression of their student will be that they are neat and orderly.
The Children’s Home of Reading-Acute Partial Hospitalization Program helped shape my perspective of professionalism thru constant reestablishments of what to expect when in an alternative hospitalization or residential treatment program. I was able to learn that the children who attend these types of facilities required much more attention. They also, require the redirection of skills that have never been taught to them before. At my internship site, an issue that is related to professionalism is that sometimes some staff members will have the intern complete miscellaneous task that has nothing to do with what they are primarily there for.
