In the field of law enforcement, professions can range from uniformed officers, investigators and the support sections. These three different categories can be found in the local, state and even federal government levels. While working in the line of duty, the public depends on the law enforcement to protect the people and the community in which they live in. Even while off duty officers are expected to enforce authority when necessary. Being professional on and off the clock as a police officer or law enforcement officer can really set the image for yourself as well as your department you represent.
The three slides in which I viewed were the law enforcement slides. The first slide was a firefighter, police officer and a sheriff officer.

Uniform is worn on a daily basis and making sure your uniform is clean and pressed for your shift tells your co-workers and prisoners how you carry yourself. Looking sharp is part of being professional. Having the proper footwear is essential because having the right pair of boots on can mean the difference between a duty shift in pain and not being able to focus on the job or being relatively comfortable (in terms of feet). As a correctional officer you need to carry various different types of gear. In general, you should have a set of cuffs to restrain, cuff keys, flashlight for searches, gloves for inspections, and radio holder to hold your radio.
Someone in my field of work that can be best described as being professional is keeping their work ethics in check in every single situation they encounter. Having great work ethics and making good decision on and off duty that will reflect positively upon the department or agency in which they work for. Everyday correctional officers must have high morals, integrity and good values as character traits in order to stand firm in the line of duty. Otherwise inmates will use this to their advantage to manipulate and use it to their advantage of a naïve or weak
For example the Academy teaches the importance of not conversing with the inmates, but a vital way to get the inmates to follow the rules one must build some sort of relationship with them. While some CO’s treated the inmates like friends and others treated the same inmates like dirt, Conover found an in between, befriending them and hating them. He gained some sort of trust but not much at all so that he wasn’t taken advantage of. He was professional but still had some sort of humanity. This is what I would do when it came to contact and inmate relationship.
The state of Nevada known for its famous city Las Vegas, gambling, and the gold that comes from its soil is one of the most intriguing states in the country. Nevada is known for tourism and beautiful desserts that accompany most of the state’s landscapes. In cities like Las Vegas and Reno, crime can be an issue due to the amount of casino’s, gambling, and prostitution. Therefore, Nevada employs best practices when it comes to certifying, qualifying and training its police forces statewide.
The NSW Police Force (NSWPF) are expected to comply with the ideals and expectations outlined in legislation and policy documents. These documents provide ethical, moral and legal principles to shape the decision-making process of police in the execution of their duty. This essay will discuss the failures of police to comply with these principles in dealing with potential juvenile offenders in the scenario. It will do this by examining their actions with reference to NSW legislation and relevant police force policy documents, discretionary powers and their application in the scenario, and communication techniques which could have had a more positive impact while complying with the directives of the NSWPF.
However, both concepts might play a role in either situation. Some individuals question whether or not “ethics” should play a big part in law enforcement. Ethics should play a part in professional standards of conduct because it sets a standard for how individuals should behave. It is very important for police officers and any other individual in the law enforcement field to properly abide by ethical standards.
Serving the public is the main duty of serving in this profession not only in a negative light by punishing those with the law but, also upholding justice, security, and protection to society. While providing these needs we must always address them without bias or discrimination because we live in a
While it can be interpreted as standing for ones beliefs, a police officer must uphold a high moral code in accordance to the society which is being served. The ethics to which police officers holds themselves, must include the character traits demonstrated in personal life, in addition to operating as public servants. If an officer is deemed untrustworthy at home, they cannot be trusted to work legally within the police department. Honesty within policing is just as important, where failing to admit a mistake can weaken a reputation and call previous cases into question. Although these traits can be trained into an individual, integrity must be developed personally before it can be applied
There are three components that make up the criminal justice system – the police, courts, and correctional facilities – they all work together in order to protect individuals and their rights as a citizen of society to live without the fear of becoming the victim of a crime. Crime, simply put is when a person violates criminal law; the criminal justice system is society’s way of implementing social control. When all three components of the criminal justice work together, it functions almost perfectly. For a person to enter the criminal justice system, the process must begin with the law enforcement.

As defined in the book, Introduction to Criminal Justice, a prosecutor is “an appointed or elected member of the practicing bar who is responsible for bringing the state’s case against the accused,” whom protects the civil rights of the criminal defendant in the process of trial. Hence, a prosecutor is the most powerful person in the Criminal Justice system because of the rurality of a case settling in court. Thus, there are three types of prosecutors, whom shares the goal and the burden of protecting the civil rights bestowed in a nondiscriminatory manner. The first type of prosecutor is in the federal system, the United States attorneys whose main purpose is to carry out justice unbiasedly in federal court, and is appointed by the president. The second type, the attorney general is the chief legal officer who is also a prosecutor of each state, including the United States.
It is easy to learn about a subject from a book, but it is an entirely different matter to learn about a subject through real life experience. I hope to learn how to serve and protect while implementing the law correctly, especially in today’s world when the level of support for police officers is very low and the level of misconduct cases concerning the police are very high. It is not easy to know what to do in every situation, especially when some reactions are needed with very little or no time to think about. It is one thing to hear about a crime happening and the response that would be best to give, and another thing to need
‘’Most officers enter law enforcement with minimal experience in the field or in handling the moral dilemmas that officers typically encounter. They learn how to perform their jobs, as well as recognize the organizational norms, values, and culture, from their peers and supervisors. While supervisors provide direct, formal reinforcement, officers’ peers offer friendship and informal rewards that, in many cases, hold greater influence than official recognition from the agency’’ (Fitch, 2011). Officers who come across situations where they are unsure what is morally and ethically best to do often turn to their peers for assurance and guidance. Good ethical behavior can easily be influenced by officers and those in law enforcement.

The word police, inspires confidence inspires a sense of truse, security, commitment, and public service.

One of the challenges includes job responsibilities and expectations. The law enforcement community and officers may have varying responsibilities when it comes to their jobs, missions as well as professional cultures with varying expectations in regards to the definition of bullying, what constitutes suitable response4s to bullying and the ways it can be prevented. Law enforcement officers and school personnel’s more often operate according to various rules. For instance, school officials have a set of school rules and codes to enforce while law enforcement officers must at all times uphold the law. Another challenge is negative perception.
