Reading and writing is an essential aspect of our everyday lives as adults. Likewise, as young children become students in school, reading and writing becomes the central foundation and focus for student success. As educators, we recognize that reading is not an innate ability. We must teach students the alphabet and the corresponding sounds those alphabetic letters make. With those letters memorized, students shift toward blending sounds together to form words. It takes much repetition for students to master this “introductory” step toward learning to read and write.
A relationship exists between reading and writing; the more students are exposed to written text, the greater the expectation that they will read and understand. We expect students to become active readers, therefore they should be held to the same standard for writing. In our technology-driven society, students are also able to express their writing through creating writing pieces with computers and tablets. Students can create storybooks and written projects with the use of technology. Also, literature can be read on a tablet or laptop device. Sometimes, for students who struggle with reading fluency, these technological devices can read a piece of text for students too. “When you provide literacy instruction that connects a child’s everyday experiences with learning from content area texts, you are almost guaranteeing that such instruction will be motivating and productive to maintaining high interest and engaged learning. Children will find almost any content engaging and worth learning if it is presented in a way that motivates them to connect it with what they know outside of school” (Alvermann, Swafford, & Montero, 2004, p.
