Progressivism in America Progressivism arose as a social movement to deal with a range of social needs and later advanced into a reform movement with greater political action. Commonly, it refers to the variety of responses to the social and economic problems that emerged due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in America during the 19th century. The early progressives rejected social Darwinism, but believed that the problems that society faced could be addressed through the provision of a safer environment, better education, efficient workplace and an honest government (Hansan).
