During the Progressive Era there were multiple of changes occurring that people became overwhelmed. New resources in the oil market, industrialization, fights for equality. There were many factory jobs, however, no one to stand up for the workers. So of course people will turn to their government for help, the power house of the country. However, even the government was picky in what they helped with.
Progressives were groups of people known as reformers that would work to improve social and political problems in the late 1800s and early 1900s during the Progressive Era of the Untied States. During the 1900s there were only three progressive presidents; President Roosevelt, President Taft, and President Wilson. These three presidents had created many changes in terms of making our society and our environment better to live in. The three presidents had passed child labor laws, had helped the union, trust-busted, and set land separately for the environmental conservation. These presidents had made many changes to help the United States.
The Progressive movement was caused corruption in politics, political machines, rapid urbanization and discrimination and equality. The Progressive movement was based on the idea that the government should have a more active role in solving economic ills. The Progressives wanted to promote child labor laws, improve the efficiency of government, expand democracy and promote social justice. The Progressives believed in progression. As in progression into a fairer society.
During the period of 1880- 1930, this was an age for development and the idea to correct the wrongs that have been done before. 1880 - 1930 had two periods in this time: the Industrial Revolution, and the Progressive era. In 1880-1930, major technological developments and the idea of Progressivism dramatically changed American life because new innovations were able to create new inventions which changed the average American’s life by increasing their productivity at work and also at home and also made new types of recreation, and Progressivism impacted Americans economically and politically by improving word conditions and also passing the Nineteenth Amendment which granted women suffrage. 3. The American people began to embrace the role of government during the progressive era to address poverty, poor health, violence, greed, racism, and class warfare. The American people came to understand that government was best positioned to improve education for regular Americans, protect them from street gangs and mobsters, ensure that that the workplace was safe, and that government was not rampant with corruption. Some of these issues were remove the corruption and undue influence, include more people within the political process, a conviction that the government must play a pivotal role to fix social problems and economic factors. The progressivist movement began as a social movement but began to push more into the political sector. The problems that this era faced such as poverty, greed or racism could be combated by providing a good education a good and efficient workplace, and a safe environment. This social group were mainly college educated and lived mainly within the city limits and identified that the government could be used as a tool in order to push their agenda. Freedom redefined as the fulfillment of human capabilities.
To the American people, both progressivism and imperialism were ways for Americans to improve their lives and help support themselves and other people. The Gilded Age’s rapid urbanization started to crumble with new problems that forced people to see the appalling conditions of residents. Not only were city governments extremely corrupt, the tenement housing situation created a plethora of difficulties. Tenement houses were severely overcrowded and were poorly constructed, which led to even more issues. Disease spread swiftly; rooms often had no windows, creating dark and filthy conditions; and the buildings could have collapsed any second.
The early 1900s were a time of widespread social and political change in America. During this time, many Americans adopted new, more modern ideas about labor, cultural diversity and city life. Some of these Progressive ideas were brought about by the need for reform in the workplace due to the grown of large companies and rapid industrialization. Not everyone supported the ideas of the Progressive Movement, however. Anti-Progressives, especially in the South, preferred traditional, rural lifestyles, and a slower, simpler way of living.
From 1896 to 1924, America went through a period known as progressivism in which people of all walks of life banded together to oppose conservatism and reform society. Progressives generally believed that government is necessary for change, however; it had to more significantly embody the ideals of democracy. Some of the specific changes that progressives wanted were regulating railroads, a direct election of senators, graduated income tax, limited immigration and eight-hour workdays. By supporting these changes, the progressives hoped to promote and expand democracy and thus give the people more power.
Contrast this against Progressivism, which Kesler calls “New View of Rights and Representation. The Progressive ideology which support advocacy of social reform by way of social evolution. Right and liberties are not guaranteed. As Political inequality was defeated in republicanism, in progressivism, economic inequality took it's place. Barriers that our Constitution held to protect civil rights and civil liberties were being worn away.
Forces such as immigration, industrialization, and the populist party during the time e=were the foundations that led to the progressive era reforms which impacted the American Government greatly in its democracy and in its activeness and involvement in businesses an so on. A historian once wrote that the 19th century was “a time of bitter conflict, as the world of the past fought to remain alive.” During the 19th century, there was an emergence of the political ideologies: liberalism, conservatism, and socialism. Liberalism sought to limit the government, preserve individual freedom and believed in the hierarchy of merit. Conservatism attempted to preserve the existing order and believed in tradition over reason. Socialists believed in strengthening parliaments and the working class to bolster laborers.
The Progressive Reform Movement The Progressive Era is often looked as an age of reformation from the economic boom in the Gilded Age. From around 1890 to 1920s, citizens of the progressive reform movement had plans to amplify our American government and economy. The different outlooks and biases have created many interpretations of this era, along with many others. Historians have many different interpretations of the reform movement during the Progressive Era.

Early off before progressive ideas began to take action within the government, there was an over abundance of corruption and greedy leaders inside the core of our government and its hierarchy. This results in a poor country for the entirety of the early 20th century until progressivism comes along with its new ideas to decrease the corruption in the U.S., and its policies to make our government stronger and more focused on the people. Once it finally gets its chance after the Great Depression and World War, people finally realize the vastly fulfilling effects it has on their lives, it begins to blow up. It gains popularity and thrives during the 20th century up till now during the early 21st century with the Obama administration.
Progressivism is the support for or advocacy of social reform. Progressivism was initially caused by the influx of the population, suspect government officials, and a plethora of people in the country wanting a change. People thought the solution to these problems could be solved by, upgrading education, safer environments or communities, and finally a smoother running workplace. The people that fought for progressivism, were usually from the city with college education. They were consistent with their beliefs that the government is the immediate solution in changing the challenges that existed in America.
