Ego, a word that has been despised for centuries. It denotes self-absorption, narcissism, and being “stuck up”. It is assumed that people with an ego are very antagonistic and always looking to put others down. While ego may have a negative connotation, it is actually an intrinsic characteristic that allows no two human beings to be completely alike. Ego was motivation for the protagonist of Ayn Rand’s Anthem.
The suffering may be moral or physical; and in my opinion it is just as absurd to call a man a coward who destroys himself, as to call a man a coward who dies of a malignant fever. "( Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1774) The meaning is moral pain is same as physical pain, and when someone suffers a lot of moral pain, he can not live too. Except love, Werther is pessimistic when he faces other problems. He signs: “That the life of man is but a dream, many a man has surmised heretofore; and I, too, am everywhere pursued by this feeling. When I consider the narrow limits within which our active and inquiring faculties are confined; when I see how all our energies are wasted in providing for mere necessities, which again have no further end than to prolong a wretched existence.”( Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1774) When he does not meet Charlotte, he always writes pessimistic things in the letter.
Equality, after his disastrous show and tell, seems to realize he wasn’t inspired to create for his brothers after all. Instead, he was actually inspired to create his invention for
Thus, when O’Brien mentions in the quote, valor was not the point, he is trying to explain to the reader that the men went like it was a job they had to do, not a random act of courage that willed them to proceed. The draft pulled them into it. They did not want to dishonor their fathers, their country and society who told them fighting is honorable. In “The Things They Carried,” it was this ‘dishonor’ that had lead them to enter the war, it was “nothing
Even though he knew if he got caught for the things he was doing, he still took the risk because his choice to learn and invent was up to him and only him. He came forward with his invention because he thought he would make it in with the scholars. Equality didn’t have to come forward with it but he did, it was his choice. He also chose to break the rules. He broke the rules so he could do what he wanted to do.
Me and my partnered both assumed that when Equality escaped, they didn’t decide to go after him as punishment, because they probably thought he wouldn’t last and would die. We also saw the reference to the Saint of the Pyre a few times which ties back to the man burned at stake for saying the unmentionable word. This book made me and my partner question a lot of things with the society within it because they were going back in time with the technology they had such as a candle instead of advancing. We questioned the society and how it came to be based on collectivism when it used to be based on individualism. Overall, me and my partner really enjoyed this book because it made us think about our society and the social relationships we
Like Judas he was a traitor because he made a promise but failed to maintain it. William Wharton represents the Devil, when introduced he was described as a “demon”. He gave himself the nickname “Wild Bill” which how big the ego he has for himself. Satan is also known for giving himself nicknames and being narcissistic. He
Although he assumed it was mere coincidence, Clark came to the learned that things may not be how they seem. As the episode continued, Clark learned Jeremy Creek’s motives for the violence. After Clark became the scarecrow, Jeremy tells him “I thought if I punished them it would stop. But it never stops.”. Clark learned through this information why Jeremy decided to injure these people, but also taught himself not to direct his own anger back onto other people.
The dystopian society depicted in Ayn Rand's novel “Anthem” is a dark and dour world where the people of the world stand as one, and . Although the world is a dark and ominous place, main character Equality 7-2521 seeks out elation with his rediscovered technology “artificial light”. He seeks this with not pride or dignity in his technology but almost a sense of wanted to break free from the binding chains of the dystopian society, as if he was doing a favor to not only to himself but also to society. However; he also knew what he was doing was very sinful, and it could land him in The Palace of Corrective Detention. The fact that Equality persevered through the disapproval of his rediscovered technology is astounding considering the sorts of primitive technology
Lord Henry is known as the person that turns an innocent boy named Dorian Gray into a cruel vile murderer. Some of the comments stated by Lord Henry are seen as cynical however there is controversy on whether or not he truly means these statements or rather they are just for effect on the story. I believe Lord Henry doesn’t mean these comments completely based on his actions in the book. The author of the book The Picture of Dorian Gray was Oscar Wilde. Wilde was known as a very eccentric kind of fellow.
He took advantage of the fact that Hassan could not read or write ,so he would tell him the wrong meanings of words. Many times he would just let Hassan take the blame for all of his problems.
