Early Greek physician-scientists, such as Aristotle, and Erasistratus, performed experiments on living animals to test products before applying them to human patients. Also, an Arab physician in twelfth century Moorish Spain, introduced animal testing as an experimental
FIV results in millions of cats dying annually from AIDS, and this research can stop their suffering as well as humans’. It is not just AIDS, however, that the genetic manipulation of cats can be used to research. There are many other diseases such as Alzheimer's as glaucoma that genetic manipulation can be used to cure. One of the main issues that comes with genetic manipulation of domestic animals is that we are” undoing what nature has worked to create over millions of years” .
I’m here today to talk about a controversial issue that has been around for a period of time, animal testing. Animal testing using animals in experiments with different chemical substances in everything from medical to cosmetic to determine their safety as well as effectiveness . It’s a problem that has existed since the 3rd and 4th centuries BCE with its merciless methods and painful ways of abusing animals for human demands, but now it’s time for it to stop. Our technology has developed significantly since; therefore, such medieval methods of torturing animals are no longer necessary. Researches have shown that each year, over 100 million animals are tortured and killed in American laboratories alone, including dogs, cats and more; this shows how far out of hand animal testing have gotten.
According to "Wasteful Animal Testing", the US drug industry monopolize $50 billion per year in scientific researches, but the approval rate of these drugs has not changed in 50
Do you know that right now millions of animals - including cats and dogs just like our adorable pets - are being tortured and locked inside cold cages in labs suffering in pain? They jump in fear whenever someone walks past, scared that they will be chosen to be the next experimental tool. After going through this terrible moments every day, almost all of these animals will be killed (if not already dead due to the experiment). It is estimated that every 8 seconds one animal is killed due to scientific research and by the time you have finished reading this paper, approximately 50 animals will have been killed for the sake of another beauty product, candy, etc. But at what price?
With most things, there are some pros and cons. In Animal testing, the pros are pretty self explanatory. They assist a better understanding of the topic they are researching and can relate it to our lives as human beings. Animals have a fully functioning body that in many cases, work similar to ours, it makes sense to not test on a piece of wood for instance. Animal testing has given us the ability to make advance realizations in the medical industry.
Mahatma Gandhi (1915) once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated”. Since the mid 19th century, animal testing has been prevalent throughout the world. Up to this date, about 115 million animals have been put to death each year for the use of animal testing which is thought to be used in the fields of medical research, drugs and cosmetic testing (International, n.d.). According to the Cruelty Free International Organization (2016), animal testing is not diminishing and in many parts of the world is increasing and is still at the same level as it was in the 1980s. Statistics show that an animal dies in a laboratory every 3 seconds, which makes animals suffer in torment and experience distress and misery more and more every year (Fieser, 2008).
Since the dawn of time humans and animals have had a close relationship. Humans have relied on animals for food, clothing, and companionship; however, using animals in research and testing products has been a topic of heated debate for decades. Each year, more than 100 million animals are killed in the United States for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and other product testing. People have different feelings for animals; many may see animals as companions while others view the living creatures as a means for improving medical techniques or furthering experimental research. Whichever way one may interpret the use for animals, the fact remains that they are being exploited by research facilities and cosmetics
Animals are severely harmed. Animals ache in pain, are scared, and experience horrid side effects (animal testing 101).From the stress some animals start biting themselves, spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, and pulling out their own fur. More than 100 million animals suffer and die each year in the US from animal testing mainly because of these tests: harsh drug, cosmetic, chemical, and food (animal testing 101). Millions of animals such as mice, rats, rabbits, cats, and dogs (e.t.c) are locked in cages in laboratories across the country. When in cages animals shake and cringe when someone approaches along with their blood pressure spiking dramatically.
“No matter whether it’s someone from the political left or right, we just need a voice to stand up and defend animal rights” a quote from Brigitte Bardot on animal experimentation. Animal experimentation has been going on for over 300 years and this is just what has been recorded in records. There are many types of test performed on animals:Draize Test: A laboratory test in which a cosmetic or drug is dropped into a rabbit 's eyes, which are held open with clips, to determine the level of irritation. Named after John Henry Draize, a twentieth century pharmacologist with the United States Food and Drug Administration.
Animal testing has always been a controversial and emotive topic. Each year, millions of innocent animals suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics tests, as well as in biology lessons, medical training exercises, and curiosity-driven medical experiments at universities (“PETA Makes Its Case Against Animal Testing” 3). Think of any drug, cosmetic or household cleaner. Chances are, at one time or another, an animal suffered in order to put that product on the shelf. As many as 800 animals are sometimes tested, experts note, before a drug is determined to be safe enough to proceed to a clinical trial (“Animal Testing” 2).
Laboratory research on animals has helped researchers have a better understanding on treating illnesses such as breast cancer, brain injury, leukemia, malaria, and much more (ProCon.org). What else is the best option to test a hypothesis on other than a person. The best way to test a hypothesis is on a living organism since humans and animals both have very integrated bodies. Since testing, a drug requires a body to circulate blood throughout the body to get the full effect to be able to see the full potential of the side effects, which may include blindness, which cannot be determined on just tissue. Human and animal DNA is very similar to mice, mice are 98% genetically similar to humans and they all have the same set of organs as a human.
After Sun reassures readers that the animals are completely safe and pain-free, she is able to reinforce how animal testing is beneficial through sound research. “The truth behind animal testing,” explains how specific discoveries such as insulin, blood transfusions, penicillin, so on and so forth have been unearthed because of animal testing. Today, many people can relate to these medical advances because they are so commonly used in hospitals and the medical field. Sun’s research even introduces multiple cases where animal testing was successful. One such case included Charles Chamberland who was able to find a vaccine for both cholera and anthrax through animal experimentation with little harm to the chickens he was testing.
Humanity has a history of experimentation on animals and death is what will come of it if animals continue to be treated inhumanely. On a daily basis animals are removed from their natural habitat and taken to labs to be tested on for human products. Animal experimentation has become a very popular method of research and testing. This procedure is most common in the United States and European countries, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom being the most popular.
According to my research, animals has been in used for scientific testing early as 500 B.C. Scientist use animals purposely for medical treatment, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products destined for human use, and other biomedical, commercial, and healthcare uses (Animal Testing, 4). It is estimated that over 26 million animals are used yearly in the U.S for scientific testing or other purpose. The reason why animals testing is so important for scientist and ultimately human race is because, animals testing allow the progress of life saving treatment for humans and animals. Second profound reason is, there no alternative means of conducting research that requires a complete living organism. The useage of animals
