What do you think of when someone says monster? To me, I think of big, hairy monsters that live under your bed. To Kristina, monster means meth, or crank. Kristina is a junior, innocent girl that moves in with her dad for the summer. Her parents have been divorced for some time. Her mother, Marie is distant and is in a midlife crisis. Her stepfather, Scott is strict and has high expectations for her. Her big sister, Leigh is gay and looked down upon by her parents. Her little brother Jake is spoiled.
Kristina seems to have a dissociative identity disorder or some type of personality disorder, because she has an inner voice called Bree. Although, she says, “I’m no more schizo than most” (page 8) when she’s explaining Bree.
Bree is loud,

This book was very graphic and went into detail about Kristina being raped. It was difficult to read this portion of the book and some teens may feel uncomfortable with it.
In the Article Banned Books #9 Crank by Ellen Hopkins, Beth says “I could understand the reasons for it being challenged when published in 2001. I admit that I am vehemently anti-drugs and although I agree wholeheartedly that there should be more education about what is out there, at points it felt like the more pleasurable parts of taking drugs was focused on” (Reads.)
This book was about a young girl, making poor life decisions and it’s effects. The pros to this book include learning possible life lessons from Kristina’s choices. The cons to this book include the chance of offending someone that has had a family member with a drug addiction or offending a rape victim.
I think the book shouldn’t be banned just because it’s graphic. Teens experience a variety of situations outside of school and by banning them from reading this book is unnecessary. We shouldn’t hinder them from learning the possible havoc of having this
The novel “Risk” by Fleur Ferris is about two teenage girls – Taylor and Sierra. Sierra meets a “boy” named Jacob Jones online and agrees to meet up with him but after three days, she still hasn’t come back home and her phone always goes straight to voicemail, Taylor ends up trying to figure out what happened to her. I felt that this novel is what I would call an actual good book, unlike other books, which seem to have a lot of girly romance that isn’t realistic, “Risk” takes it to a whole new level as the whole storyline and situation is terrifying but at the same time realistic and sets awareness because it could happen in anyone’s
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
The book sheds a tear as it is banned by administration for students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned for summer reading for incoming sophomores because of its “explicit” content. After high school, out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you. You must experience life and all that comes with it.
This novel without a doubt needs to be banned. It is not only considered obscene but can also be a threat to society. This is because it would allow young children and teenagers to acquire the idea in their heads that drugs make life better for the time being and it is a good way to run away from your problems mentally
A parent or the student should be the one who decided whether or not the book is appropriate. Also, when a child is sheltered from the world, a book with just a bit of adult material could help them understand what really happens. It could prepare them so when they do become older and get a job, the world doesn’t put them into complete shock. Taken from Common Reasons for Banning Books, “…it is important that the reader makes his/her judgments on the book.” To elaborate on this, another person shouldn’t tell a student what and what not to read.
They claim that the book has many redeeming qualities about it, and also is a great tool for teaching students reading and analytical skills. In my opinion, teachers should be permitted to teach these questionable book to their students. If an author's work was to be tampered with I feel as if many books will lose their value and or the meaning the author was trying to convey. Many of these “banned books” were written based on the time period it was wrote about. Banned books also can teach us history, social skills, vocabulary , and a new way of thinking.
Fahrenheit 451 has an astonishingly accurate future depiction of a society in which everyone is too distracted by technology, so they ignore most of the world around them. The community members are not aware of nature or other human beings, and they never take time to actually think deeply about life and ideas in general. Many high school and middle school teach this book in curriculums nationwide, because the addiction to technology and hatred of books portrayed in the book is beginning to be prevalent in our society. This book also glorifies individuality by admiring a girl who is different from everyone else. In the past, many parents have decided to challenge this book due to the violence, the religious discrimination, the foul language, and the references to drinking and smoking.
There are countless reasons that everybody should know why books are being banned all over the world! One of the reasons is that parents do not want their children to be exposed to inappropriate topics. Moreover, some books discusses topics that people object to like dark arts and homosexuality. However, there are also reasons why books should not be banned. When children enjoy books, it improves their vocabulary, and it teaches them life lessons.
There are both pros and cons to banning book in school. According to ProCon.org, “Parents have the right to decide what material their children are exposed to and when.” Parents have the right to ban books so they can protect their children from violent content. Children need to be protect from content that could scar them. ProCon.org also states that “Children should not be exposed to sex, violence, drug use, or other inappropriate topics in school or public libraries.”
Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them. Writers have the freedom to write whatever they want and that is a part of the First Amendment, so why banned their book? “The First Amendment allows individuals to speak, publish, read and view what they wish, worship (or not worship) as they wish, associate with
What they did was put it in the library instead of teaching it in the curriculum. Yes the book might be appropriate for some children, but for others it might be too intense. So putting it in the library lets you decide whether you are ready for the book, if not don 't read it. Like where it says in paragraph 3 of the article where it says, “It’s still in our library”. The school leader in Biloxi thought that the morals taught from the book “to Kill a Mockingbird” could be replicated in a less offensive form through another book.
Firstly, bullying is one of the reasons to ban this novel. The main character is a usual target point for bullying because of his physical appearance. The author notes that “The
Books, Should We Ban Them Or Not: Banned books are books that have been taken out of public environments because of many different reasons. Books should not be banned simply because we have the rights to any books. Banned Books can teach important things about our history. Books that have been banned teach great morals/lesson even with the negative content. Banning Books infringes on people 's personal rights.
Also, some say that you should not be exposing bad behavior or language to students but in reality they hear and see these things everyday, and by banning a book, that is not protecting them.
