Be it resolved that Rogers High School should adopt a block scheduling system. Block scheduling is a system for middle and high schools by replacing the typical day of six or seven classes that are about 40-50 minutes every day with a schedule of three or four classes that are longer and meet less times a week. Whether it’s because less time is being wasted or the noise and chaos that come with passing time, block schedules benefit both teachers and students alike.
If Mr. Ramsey wants to eliminate Wildcat Time to lengthen the duration of each period, then I fully support him. Wildcat time should be a time to do homework or speak with a teacher about missing or incomplete work, but most students just use it for chatting with their friends or roaming the halls with no purpose. If nothing productive is being done during Wildcat Time then what is the point of having it? With more time being devoted to classes, teachers and students can accomplish more every day.
The four day school week is a relatively new idea that some schools are beginning to implement in rural areas. The shorter week can help the schools save money without the extra day to operate and have also demonstrated some unexpected positive changes like students performing better on tests, higher grades, and better behavior. The four-day school week has minimal flaws when compared to a five-day
Under the year-round calendar, it may be more difficult to schedule activities such as sports, or band, due to the constant schooling, and frequent breaks. According to the National Education Association, “... extracurricular activities, like sports and band, may be more difficult under the year-round schedule” (Text 2,2). This text states that scheduling may be difficult for some activities under the year-round calendar; however, that may not always be the case. Schedules for sporting events, band, and other activities could easily be fit under the year-round schedule, because there are still weekends, and frequent breaks that activities could be fit under the year-round schedule, because there are still weekends, and frequent breaks that activities could be fit under. In conclusion, the year-round calendar has many advantages over the traditional calendar; such as, decreasing student, and teacher burnout, while also decreasing the amount of time spent reviewing.
Scheduling can become a hassle with year long schooling as teenagers are less likely to receive a job. Even, after school activities may suffer, as it can become difficult for the school to maintain the costs of having a sport and maintaining the costs of the building. This can cause many missed opportunities for the students, as sports can allow for a person to go to college, and a job can allow a teenager to receive important skills that can be used for later jobs. With year long schooling, the maintenance costs can increase upwards to 10 percent if they are open longer (Pros and Cons). Also with this schedule there is a need for more staff in the school, which increases labor costs (Pros and Cons).
Four days of school are better. The school districts have been arguing about the school schedule for provide the most effective curricular benefits for students. The current economic downfall has impacted many of the schools in not teaching the next, students in the most effective environment and decreasing their graduation rate. Next, Many school district have adopted a new four-day school schedule that significantly changes the customary five-day school week to recover its quality of educations.
8:00 AM to 3:00 PM, 50 minute periods, or Reading at 10:00 AM – 10:50 AM on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (Miles & Hammond, 1998, p. 16) Miles and Hammond acknowledged desirable reforms as objectives focused on increasing student achievement by developing a new curriculum composed of new standards, positive teacher-student relationships and increased planning time for teachers. Strategies employed by schools found to curb resource allocation issues were addressed in the study under the following six principals: • Reduction of specialized programs to provide more individual time for all in heterogeneous groups; • More flexible student grouping; • Structures that create more personalized
This calendar is called a multi-track calendar. As one group of students that are coming back from an intermission, another batch leaves so that there is a constant flow that doesn’t overflow the facility. Thus, allowing schools and district to admit more students without overflowing or causing problems. This, in fact will allow them to use the money that would’ve been spent building a new school or remodeling an old one into teacher’s paychecks, better books, new technologies, or more supplies for the
Because of a four day school week, classes are extended, therefore giving the teachers a longer teaching period. Charlene Heil, a business and technology teacher says, “I actually have been able to get more done. When you have a longer time period you can have more depth of instruction.” The conclusion can be drawn that teachers and students like the four day school week that they did a better job, and their productivity was
I think there should be four day school weeks because students most likely want more free time out of school. The school days will end at 4:00 or maybe 4:30 pm because regular school days wouldn’t be enough learning time. This way we could have longer class periods and it’ll help because you’ll get the help you need and work will be handed in on time. Every student has missing work, longer school days help you get some of it all in and grades will be up. Plus, maybe students could do a little work on the day that they won’t have school.
Block scheduling, on the other hand, has four periods a day, about ninety minutes for each block. This limits the number of classes music students can take. This
Have you ever wondered why there cannot be more hours in the day to do any work? As a sophomore at FHS I believe everyday is a battle against the clock to finish all my assignments before very intimidating deadlines and due dates. “According to an article published in the US News, “Schools are giving too much homework, high school students are getting up to 17.5 hours of homework a week and teacher are expecting students to get it all done in one night.” (letters2president.org). Implementing a study hall period for all students can really improve FHS because many students would have time to receive help from their teachers on assignments they require assistance on and students involved in extracurricular activities would have a much needed
Four-day school weeks have the capability to change student lives. Every school should invest in the four-day school week plan. Implementing this routine would allow teachers more time to teach and give students the option to do their homework during class, in turn creating student success. All of these factors would help to enhance student and faculty life, while promoting success in the classroom. Having a school system run on a four-day rotation would increase their success by offering more opportunities for lesson and work time.
Overall, the four-day week schedule will help students and
Although this could result in students being in school 30 minutes longer it gives them the opportunity to complete some tasks that would cause them stress later that
As a middle school teachers for nearly twenty years, I have seen very little change in the basic structure of the public school schedule. The days of the year, hours of the school day and number of periods have remained relatively unchanged, regardless of the district or building. It was very early on in my career when I fully realized that regardless of the lesson or task at hand, the clock was not to be challenged. American public schools have a long history of maintaining this basic core structure and as much as research continues to support its change, there has been very little movement in this arena.
