Christopher Columbus is not worthy of a recognition of a national holiday. Columbus is not worthy of a national holiday because he threatened and killed people. For example he claimed the indians land as his own. Also he murdered the indians and forced them into hard labor. Also to test how sharp his swords were he cut pieces of of the indians. Another horrible thing he did was force them into slavery. 3 million native americans perished through the torture along with war. Last he took their land and turned it into colonies. So Columbus basically took the indians land and ran them all the back to the west side of the country. Also the war killed 3 million population which was about 7% of their whole population and he could’ve handle meeting
Even thought America wasn’t named after him; he should still be horned for his bravery to find a new way to India. But instead he found a new home for millions of people. Thats why he should have a day to celebrate for him. Columbus was not Spanish yet he claimed land for Spain?
Prompt #3 Columbus sparked a movement of genocide and prejudice that lasted 500+ years. Before Columbus came, the America’s were a wonderland of diversity, culture and advanced technologies that would frustrate many, if you detailed their complexity. This is because many have learned about indians as barbaric, inferior beings, with a simple way of life. In the Margoline excerpts that we read, they stated “As one example of California’s extraordinary diversity, consider the matter of boats.
I claim that Columbus Day should remain an American holiday. I believe Columbus Day should remain an American holiday because Columbus laid the foundations for the widespread European migration from Europe to America. Although Columbus was not the first to discover America, he was the first to attempt to colonize America. Columbus’ Voyages led to the widespread exchange of food, goods and animals. Now known as the Columbian Exchange, this is a momentous point in history.
I believe that Columbus Day shouldn’t be a holiday. Columbus was horrible to the Native Americans, He took them as slaves, wiped out them with diseases, and just killed them outright with superior weapons like guns. He tried to convert Native Americans into Christians while trying to wipe out the Native American Culture. In Columbus’ journal Columbus wrote “All the inhabitants could be taken away to spain to become slaves.”
Many historians and textbooks argue that Christopher Columbus should be celebrated for his accomplishment, of finding new lands. A quote from the text,“When we read the history books given to children in the United States, it all starts with heroic adventure-there is no bloodshed-and Columbus Day is a celebration” (Zinn 5). With this in mind Zinn had made an argument as to how this was wrong. That there was
I feel that Columbus Day shouldn’t be a national holiday. It should not be a holiday because Columbus was an awful person. He murdered hundreds of natives causing genocide, killing off half of the population either by overworking them or making them starve. He also brought harmful germs and diseases to the indigenous people such as smallpox, influenza, typhus, and typhoid. Lastly, he enslaved the Natives so that he could have gold.
Christopher Columbus is portrayed as a hero in most discussions regarding him but in actuality he is a villain because of how changed the economic, religious, and social aspects of life in the New World with mass genocide of the native people, destruction of the native peoples’ homes, and the exploitation of the natives. With the arrival of Columbus in the New World came new economic opportunities for Columbus. Columbus exploited the curious natives by trading anything they chose for the resources of the Native Americans. Columbus was in search of gold in the New World and noticed that the natives indeed had it in their culture and wore it as simple jewelry.
Christopher Columbus or Native Americans We have been taught the same concept of the discovery of America for hundreds of years. Christopher Columbus discovered America and we celebrate Columbus Day every year to honor his bravery and strength, but every story has two sides. Native Americans who have been settled in the “New World” long before Columbus stumbled onto the land, aren’t given the recognition they deserve.
Is Christopher Columbus Worth Honoring The world has glorified many historical people especially early explorers. One such explorer is Christopher Columbus. Historians have discovered that perhaps Columbus Was given honor prematurely.
Finally, we should celebrate Columbus Day because he brought value to America. When I say "value" I mean he made America worth something. Not money-wise but more livable through goods and services for citizens here in America. Basically the "west Indies" people lived off natural resources and made shelter from their surroundings. When Christopher Columbus arrived he made businesses for people who wanted to work, and he made trade markets for people who wanted to buy goods from the old world such as jewelry, jewels, spices, perfume, etc; only the wealthy bought such items.
There are many opinions about Columbus Day and whether we should celebrate it as a holiday. I believe the extent in which we should celebrate Columbus Day is just acknowledging him rather than dedicating a federal holiday to him. I would propose to celebrate “Indigenous People’s Day” or “Native Americans’ Day”. My opinion comes from his actual discovery of th New World and his actions after he settled in North America. One reason why I think we should not celebrate Columbus day to the extent of a federal holiday is because of the thinking that Columbus was the one who discovered North America.
At times, he stole things but he also gave things back to the people. Most people would think that Columbus was a bad man because he was bad to the Natives. In the first paragraph of the Gale Encyclopedia called “Native American, Treatment of (Spain vs. England) (Issue),” is states “When Christopher Columbus landed on the island of Hispaniola in 1492, he met natives there.” They were the ones who discovered the island first, so it was
Have you ever met someone who was not who you thought they were? This has been happening throughout history. "America's Founder" Christopher Columbus is portrayed as a hero in history books but new studies have shown a different side of Christopher. Due to this evidence I believe that Columbus day should be revoked.
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
( History Alive! Page 27). On Columbus’s boats brought disease which the Natives had never experienced before. Since their immune system did not know how to fight it and there was no medicine a lot of them died. Christopher Columbus for these reasons should not have a national holiday.
