When you hear the names of Christopher Columbus, Alonso Zuazo, and Bartolomé delas Casas, do you think of good characteristics of them? There are people that agree or disagree if these individuals actually made history without taking credit from someone else. Native Americans plays a big part with all these individuals. I’ll discuss the exploitation of Christopher Columbus, Alonso Zuazo, and Bartolomé delas Casas. Also, how the Native Americans were enslaved, labor source being required, and replacements were found.
There were arguments whether Christopher Columbus was a hero or a villain if he truly discovered land for the first time. Columbus wrote in his journal from August 1492 all the way through October 1492 that took place in Spain. Throughout his writings he mentions “the king” as if it was his

This is where Indies were founded but now called the Hispaniola. These Spanish Christians were honest, no grudges, and etc. According to “Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies” there were cons about them, for instance, “…so weak and complaisant, they are less able to endure heavy labor and soon die.” The Hispaniola had a total of 12 million Native Indians on the island and blaming the church being involved somewhat. When the Spaniards noticed some of the Native Indians escaped, he sent out a ship where it took several years to find them to kill. But before that, they would have slain the individuals or even sell them to slavery. All of these killings were to collect any gold they could find according to “Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies” , “Their reason for killing and destroying such an infinite of souls is that the Christians have an ultimate aim, which is to acquire gold.” Eventually the killings and violence did end leaving everything a wreck where milk in the breasts were dried up, men died in mines being separated from their love ones, so much distressed and hunger it just led more to
Christopher Columbus is a man who is known in society simultaneously as a hero and a villain of his time. What if the world had to pick only one, what would it be? Many new studies and scholars believe that Columbus was the villain of his story not a hero as past information would lead us to believe. Past documents were all written from the Europe’s point of view, this would lead to extremely biased documents because Europe was the side to profit unlike the Native
Is Christopher Columbus a hero or villain? That's a question that verias people are debating,I strongly believe he was warrior,he was widely known as an explorer and for surviving the vile winds of the atlantic ocean. Daring to succeed to accomplish his four voyages and opening new trade routes. He was a commercialist, meaning he had practices, methods, aims, and spirit of free enterprise geared toward generating profit. Wealth and power belonged to traders who plied the route characterised by Columbus. He exchanged language, food, animals and crops that the europeans and the native americans didn’t know about.
Even though many people believe that christopher columbus was a hero I have found in my opinion that I believe he was a villain. I believe this because in the 4th document in the article about Christopher Columbus it was said that many people and indians were killed after his arrival and before his arrival there were many more people there than after his arrival. The people were killed from war, slavery and working in mines for Columbus. One other reason that I believe he was a villain is because if I was those people who were ruled by Columbus I would have stood up for not just me but everyone who was being mistreated by Columbus.
On the other hand, Bartoleme de Las Casas tells his own experiences with those native Indians. Las Casas gives many distinct details about native Indians: their kindness and sincerity, their intelligence but never being arrogant, them being poor but very clean. Las Casas even praises the native inhabitants saying that, “The goodness of the Indians is undeniable and that if this gifted people could be brought to know the one true God they would be the most fortunate people in the world."(Las Casas pg 2) Las Casas descriptions of Native Americans confirms Columbus account in several ways.
Columbus sent word about his discovery to King Ferdinand, which later would be responsible for the deaths of most of the Indian population. As the Spanish rained terror across the island, rumors were spread about the atrocities committed by the Spaniards. Bartolomé de las Casas is a firm believer in the Christianity faith, so when he first heard about the rumors, he felt that it was his duty to form a social reform towards the well-being of the Indians. Bartolomé de las Casas traveled to the island of Hispaniola to see for himself if the rumored treatment of the native Indies were true. When Casas arrived at the island he was devastated from what he saw.
However, Columbus neither sailed to America nor discovered anything. In fact, Columbus actually found Hispaniola, now called Haiti, where the Taino Natives lived. In the first day Columbus was in the “New World” he enslaved six Natives to help him kill other Natives. His returning to Spain was exciting and he was considered a true hero. He brought back gold, spices, pineapple, and Native slaves.
For countless years, the Natives suffered under the hands of the Spaniards. Slavery, abuse, war, theft, and much more were the result of Spain taking over the Natives homeland and the Native people themselves. In the year 1542, Bartoleme de Las Casas wrote a manuscript called “Brief Account of the Devastation of the Indies”, which held a very detailed account of how the natives suffered, and the actions of the Spaniards. This paper will be a brief summary and analysis of the destruction of the Indies. The Indians were said to be very moral people.
“The Devastation of the Indies” In the article, “The Devastation of the Indies” by Bartoleme de Las Casa, we read about the horrible things that were done to the Indians by the so-called Christians who were heaven sent who were known as the Spaniards. The Spaniards did not consider the Indians as human beings. The Spaniards came into the Indian land and tried to turn them into something they are not. They treated the Indians like dogs and did not pity them in any way.
This source was written in 1542, and this speech was given to the people of the country of Spain. The Martolome De Las Casas, the lord Prince of Spains don Felipe gave this speech to the people. Giving this speech, the Prince shows how horrid the idea of the Christians killing and destroying the Indies. The Christians represent the English and the Indies are the Indians. The Christians invaded North America and stole the Indians’ gold, food, and killed a multitude of them: “The cause for which the Christians have slain and destroyed so many and such infinite numbers of souls, has been simply to get, as their ultimate end, the Indians’ gold of them, and to stuff themselves with riches in a very few days, and to raise themselves to high estates...
According to Loewen, few textbooks explained how Columbus was involved in the slavery and the exploitation of Indians. Another error that we have learned in schools about Columbus is that he was the first person to “discover” America. However, this is an error because people from other continents had already reached America before 1492. In fact, we forget
Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes were both famous Spanish adventurers during the Age of Exploration. When the explorers came upon land, they encountered two different cultures. In 1492, Columbus encountered the Taino people, and in 1520, Cortes encountered the Aztecs. The two cultures that the men encountered were different in more ways than they were similar in regards to how the natives treated the men, what weapons they had and their war-like behavior, their technologically advancements, their housing and architectural structures, and even their religion.
In 1492 Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue. We all know this catchy tune right? But what we don’t know, is what Columbus thought when he arrived in the North America or what he though of the Native Americans he met. In fact, we don’t know much about all the explorers after Columbus and what they thought. Each explore had their own view of the Native Americans, and three great examples are Columbus, Juan Ginés de Sepúlveda and Bartolomé de Las Casas
Some say Christopher Columbus was a hero because he was the explorer that discovered America. In reality, Christopher Columbus had an incredibly negative impact on the world because he enslaved the Native Americans, didn’t help the kind Natives when they got infected by diseases that the Spaniards had brought to America, and killed off most of the Native American population. The tactics he chose to use were violent and destructive by the standards back then and now. First, Columbus treated the Native Americans like uncivilized people by enslaving them and forcing them to work for him although they greeted him and his crew peacefully. ” They could make fine servants,”(document 2) he wrote in his journal,”I took them by force.
