In the first edition of this book called Coal Energy Systems written by the same author as Clean Coal Engineering Technology (Second addition) says that coal is the main energy source in the United States. The start of the second edition says that coal is the largest source of fuel in the world and exists in about 70 different countries. Coal can generate as much electricity as all the other energy sources combined and in the United States, coal is the abundant energy source. Coal has a big history of producing many pollutants into the atmosphere and has been contributed to many health problems. An act was put in place called The Clean Air Act Amendments if 1970.
As of January 1st, 2016, there are over 18.3 billion short tons of coal left in the United States. Coal is found in fifty-three of fifty-five counties in the state of West Virginia, and it leads the country in coal production. It does have a negative effect on the environment, it is a major source of air pollution, but overall coal is important to the country. As an energy source we depend on, without the mining of coal the country would have an energy problem. We use coal for heat, transportation, and electricity.
This would assist those states most reliant on coal for electricity and subsidize the replacement of coal power plants in those areas. ELECTRICITY Issue Residential electricity usage accounts for the largest percentage of sector consumption at around 33%. This consumption is highest during the summer months, when air conditioning in many states is a necessity.
During the process of combustion within the coal power plants, many oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen are created which results in harsh chemicals being emitted into the air and surrounding ecosystems. “A typical (500 megawatt) coal plant burns 1.4 million tons of coal each year, and as of 2012, there [were] 572 operational coal plants in the U.S. with an average capacity of 547 megawatts” (Union of Concerned Scientist), eluding how distributed the pollution is affecting the entire country. It is important for us as humans to realize that with 572 plants generating 1.4 millions of tons of coal per year, which means approximately an overwhelming 800 million tons of coal are being burned in power plants and emitted into the environment each year, and nothing is being done about it. The burning of coal results in ash, sludge, toxic chemicals, and waste heat that generate never ending environmental problems. “Sulfur dioxide (SO2), contributing to acid rain, nitrogen oxides (NOx), contributing to smog, and particulates, which contribute to both smog and haze” (EIA 2015), are all examples of how the combustion of coal in the electricity generating process has led to irreversible changes in the environment.
Recently, people worldwide have been questioning what should be the preferable energy resource for them. This question led researchers to examine the two great, yet antagonistic sources of energy: renewable energy and fossil fuel energy. Both are excellent energy resources. According to the article “Fossil Fuel” published by Encyclopædia Britannica, fossil fuels are all sorts of materials derived from the Earth’s mantle which are useful to provide energy. Furthermore, the article “Renewable Energy” with the same publisher states that renewable energy, also named alternative energy, includes all types of power sources given by nature.
But coal is in a unique position, as there is a growing backlash against the use of it to a degree never before seen. In a comparative check, all fossil fuels have a higher rate of mortality (individual and cumulative basis) than renewable resources. Out of the renewable resources, nuclear energy currently holds the lowest mortality and pollution rate of all. Granted, nuclear energy is used far less globally. But in the countries that nuclear energy is increasingly becoming the primary energy source, the have been zero notable fluctuations in mortality, pollution, and cost attributable to nuclear energy.
Did you know that coal was formed 300 million years ago when the world was first being formed? It is considered a non- renewable energy source due to taking one million years to form. Coal may take this long to form, but there is so much of it and costs very little to purchase, so it is one of the largest resources used in the world. There are 27 United States that still mine for coal to this day. The value of coal produced in the United States every year is estimated to be around $20 billion and will continue to be one of the largest economies in this country for a while.
However, it is not a sustainable energy source and one day it will all run out. Other sustainable and renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are much more expensive than coal. Although solar and wind are long-term and best for a sustainable future, mining and electricity companies are still choosing to use coal. Coal is widely debated, and its future is still very much

(SourceWatch) It is also crazy how much power a coal fired power plant needs! A 1000 megawatt coal fired power plant produces approximately the same amount of global warming as 1.2 million cars! (SourceWatch) Coal industries have the largest percentage of anthropogenic carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Coal contains minor amounts of radioactive elements, uranium, and thorium.
Coal is an important resource that is used by humans every day, but what is it? Coal was naturally formed and now we extract it and put it to use. Though coal is a great help to many households, there are many disadvantages as well as advantages. Coal is a sedimentary rock that is made up of mainly carbon and has the capability of being burnt as a fuel and can bring electricity to people from around the world. Thermal coal produces around forty-one percent of the worlds electricity because it is reliable and cheap, costing only eighty-five U.S. dollars per metric ton in 2017.
Coal is used for fuel for power plants and used to be for locomotive trains. Power plants such as lakeshore and Eastlake use coal to create electricity is the process in which the coal’s energy is then transferred to electric energy to create electricity. Coal has some upsides but coal also has some downsides. I will start with the upsides. One upside is that coal is one energy source.
